  • @bjimp - it is not. The bass' name is Joe also

  • Comment removed

  • @bjimp Yes Joe Connelly but Joe Krones on bass. Not Jim Henry. Jack Pinto is the baritone. New tenor is Kipp Buckner..not sure who whitey is.

  • @kowens001 the tenor on the end is who is the oldest is rick taylor he directs the chorus of the cheesapeak which is from dundalk maryland.

  • Love this quartet! They've GOT to win in Philly :D

  • That's some BARBERSHOP!

  • Waheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyyy fab guys as always, love this Video!! Go beast you rock big time and cant wait to see you in philly yay!!! x

  • jack i love u.

  • wow, every one is correct! Vibrato can happen a few ways. For some of us, it is just happens- it's natural, free, and will still ring- if you sing properly and keep the ring in your voice while maintaining a free, resonate sound it's flawless. When you take vocal lessons you can also train your self to have a vibrato- there are various excersises that will help obtain it. I was trained to do both- when necessary. Both of you guys are correct.

  • Meant to give you a thumbs up spebsqsa1 and hit the wrong icon. Sorry.

  • Dear old DAAAAAAD!

  • cant stop rewinding!

  • Deeeeeear ooooooooooooooold DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!!

  • Not a fan of the fake tag. The fake ending chord was 1-3-5-1 while the real ending chord was 1-5-1-3 where only the baritone and tenor switched parts. The real chord didn't sound different enough from the fake chord to warrant a fake tag.

Might have been better if the real chord was 1-1-3-5.

  • Agreed. But they ended about halfway between A and B-flat, so the fifth would probably be a tad high for comfort.

  • the bass is out singing Joe...HAHAHAHA !!!!

  • even if straight tones dont create overtones they are a lot easiar and more pleasing to listen to.

  • yeah cookie cutter quartet...pshh

  • Nothing old school about this. They sound like everyone else. Cookie cutter quartets.

  • that cookie cutter is in the shape of a gold medal

  • Proves my point. Not able to think or consider anything outside of what is known. The individual voices have no colour or depth which significantly cuts down on the sound created. I have heard some of them in person, so it is not a video quality problem. The notion that individual singers don't have to be that good as long as they can harmonize is ridiculous also. Hearing four great voices is an incredible experience that, sadly, most people in the bbs community will never know.

  • You have some interesting thoughts on barbershop...if you don't try and match vocal timbre then you introduce a lot of frequencies that interfere with creating overtones. So, if you want barbershop that has parts sticking out and no overtones, then you can listen to Il Divo.

  • Il Divo's major problem are sound engineers, modern bands, and unions, not matching timbre or vowels. You can match timbre without singing straight tones which actually hurts overtones and in the long run, your throat. Check out Boston Common and the Buffalo Bills for non-straight tone singing. Everyone seems to be victim of current styles because that is what they know and they are not willing to consider anything else; along with a lack of proper vocal training.

  • Haydnquartet, please explain to me how vibrato actually helps overtones?

  • Overtones are naturally produced with an opened and relaxed throat. (The only way to produce straight tones is to tense muscles causing strain on the voice.) If you produce more overtones with a single voice, obviously there will be more with the overall sound. It is just as easy to tune a chord this way as it is without producing overtones. In fact, it produces a much richer sound. However, you cannot force or overly induce vibrato. That is an entirely different problem.

  • Straight tones are properly held by the support from your diaphragm which these singers and all top 10 quartets do. Open throat singing is nothing without the proper support

  • The 1980 champs, Boston Common, sang with vibrato, so everyone's right. Singing without vibrato truly locks in the chord, but it's not necessary to win.

  • You're either some old barbershopper who's too stubborn to change, or you just have no idea how overtones are created in ensemble singing, also, your understanding of the voice is incorrect. Vibratto has nothing to do with singing "open throat" or not. Vibratto is merely alternating between the tonal center, and the notes immediately above and below in rapid succession. In ensemble singing, a properly balanced and in tune chord supports overtones. Vibratto creates variables in the chord.

  • You are obviously a new barbershopper who can't understand that everyone does not have to conform to the ideas of a lot of untrained singers pretending they know what they are doing. An opened and relaxed throat and good support WILL generate some vibrato in the voice. There is no way to get around that except by tensing muscles which will unnecessarily hurt the vocal mechanism in the long run. A natural vibrato will never be hard to tune with and will create a fuller and richer sound.

  • I'm sorry, but your wrong. Get a barbershop quartet and have everyone sing with vibratto, and a straight tone quartet will produce more overtones. Like I said, vibratto creates pitch variations. Creating overtones in ensemble singing requires precise intervals, that when sung correctly, will generate the said overtones. Vbratto singers certainly can create overtones within their OWN voice, pairing them up with others with vibratto hinders the precise intervals needed for ensemble overtones.

  • The ONLY overtones that are created by any ensemble is by individual voices. You can change the overtone structure by someone other than the melody singer being dominant, which, creates an interfering overtone series (a bad thing). Natural vibratto is easy to tune when you've done it for a while and because the sound produced is correct, it has more overtones than would be created by a tense voice which comes from straight tone singing. Plus, your voice isn't worn out by the time your 50.

  • you think overtones are ONLY created by single voices? the main overtones you hear in ensemble singing, especially barbershop, appear when the higher frequencies of two or more seperate voices reinforce each other making those certain frequencies audible. which is why barbershoppers use straight tones and matching vowels. when the vowels and voices match, the frequencies match making them blend to create overtones. vibrato disrupts the frequencies making overtones harder to hear.

  • Wrong. Vibrato has EVERYTHING to do with open throat singing, unless you are of the disgusting and false belief that vibrato comes about by "shaking one's head" or something ridiculous like that! Vibrato is the natural oscillation of the vocal cords as air passes through. Straight tone controls the vocal cords with tension.

  • What you've said about tuning is correct-- but vibrato is not as nasty as you might think. The overtones created by two voices using a little bit of vibrato will SQUASH those created by clenched throat complete straight tone singing. As you grow in your experience with the voice, you will understand. Private/operatic study will also help teach you of these truths

  • They'll be tough to beat after adding Kip, although I think this tenor's also great.

  • that's a damn long bass post =)

  • where is this island view?

  • This is in Anacortes, WA

  • Pretty good quartet. It is a shame they are retiring.

  • where did you hear that?

  • don't think we are retiring we have shows booked thorugh 2009 fall and beginning in 2010 thanks

  • are you thinking about Redline?

  • It's a shame they're retiring...

  • Not retiring...it was announced today [3/25/09] on the Harmonet that Kip Buckner was joining OS as their new tenor, replacing Rick Taylor...Kip and Joe together again: WOW!

  • That's awesome, Kip is back in action! Woo.

  • yeah, they all have great voices, but how clean are those tenor belts, that first one comes outta nowhere

  • i know right!!

  • you try singing with that caliber of bass, and see how "muscular" it is
