  • I like it, but you should make another one with Gimp 2.6 (current version)

  • :D hooray~! tank kyu~!

  • Thanks man! You really helped me with my school's yearbook!

  • This is an AWESOME tutorial! Had to create lightning in a pinch and this saved me tons of time... thanks!

  • glad this still looks good in 2.6...

  • "maximum hardness"

    thats what she said

  • Thanks! Very helpful.

  • what version is this?

  • @Enselic lol

  • @skilltestingquestion read the tittle lol

  • @skilltestingquestion It's in the Title.

  • @skilltestingquestion

are you THAT stupid? look at the title!

  • Maximum hardness.......lol giggidy

  • Awsome video I really liked it alot.

  • I have GIMP 2.6.7 :(

  • still works :):)

  • Its cool, but at 3:30, it looked better than the finished project. Because the finished project had no glow, or light. idk.

  • Hey, cool technique and nice tutorial.

But I just wanted to say that real lightning doesn't form any closed loops in mid air like the one to the right of the lower portion of your first lightning image, so you may want to remove loops like that from your image if you care about that kind of thing as much as I do. :p

Otherwise, very informative and useful video. :)

  • if you look closely after he filters out the white it looks like theirs 2 faces. on the left is an ape looking thing, on the right a mountain man wearing a beaver hat. thats just my opinion tho

  • Dude! Your right!!

  • very good!!!.

  • so many thanks to you for this!!

  • Thanks for making this i needed this

  • I love how you simplified the steps. It's so much easier to understand than those other tutorial videos!

  • i love all you people who have the patience to do all these tutorials!

  • And I love you for not having a user name with numbers in it like most people ;) Long live orginality

  • yes originality is the best. Now that I've thought about it nd practised the lightning effect i do have one question, how do you get the lightning effect on transparency? so u can put it over another picture?

  • Put it on another image and use the Multiply layer mode.

  • very nice

  • Great tutorial, thank you. :)

  • Dude. I love you :D

  • omg thanks

  • Thank you so much for your brilliant tutorial. You have inspired me! Thank you once again!!

  • maximum hardness!!

  • thanks really helpful

  • this works on the lastest gimp witch is 2.6

thanks for the tuturial. the lighting makes my sigs better!

  • Very nice.

    Very useful.

How might the lightning be animated a bit?

  • to those that are asking how to get rid of the black background, after you make the lighting you can go to 'colors>color to alpha' and just make sure the selected color is black. hope it helps.

  • how can you place just the lightning on top/over an image without having the black background cover up whats under it

  • Thank you very much !!!!!!!!

  • What OS is this? Some Linux distribution?

  • Yes (read the video description)

  • what programm you used for filming and zooming? btw nice tutorial ;)

  • try CamStudio ;)

  • thank you great tutorial

  • Best tutorial ever. You sounds swedish and if you are, great english!

  • i do it tnx you!

  • wow it works, thank you!!

  • awsome tutorial!!! i have gimp 2.4.6 and it works great

  • Very useful again. Thank you.

May I ask what tool you're using to record your tutorials.

  • I really enjoy your tutorials. They have helped me out so much!!

    Great work!

  • The other side my GIMP, the side with out the little icons, (the right side) disappeared!! Can anyone tell me how to get it back? Help!!

  • i <3 u!

  • i made a youtube account just so i can post i watched all your videos this was first one i look at as it was what i was looking for. i am used to using photoshop but it cost to much to buy and gimp seems harder to use to me.

you helped allot and hoping you post more for gimp.

  • Amazing man, you're awesome

  • thank you very much.

  • Thanks

  • AWESOME!

  • I like how you talk! It's pretty funny! And thanks for the tutorial. It's better than reading step by steps since I can see you do it first hand.

  • Great tutorial! Finally someone takes you step by step through a process instead of just clicking away assuming you are following. Thanks, I hope you will keep on with your GIMP tutorials.

  • it didn't work in GIMP 2.4.1

  • Of course it does

  • Need to try it another time.

  • Wow. sweet !

  • Thx for this great video, it really helped me. THX!

  • I have GIMP 2.4.1!!!

  • I have 2.4.4 =)

  • awesome! thnx

  • i have 2.4 gimp

  • Nice One!! Thanx

  • thank you! That was really helpful!=D

  • can you make a tutorial that shows how to make ''sig's''

  • this sick good joB!

  • Nice idea, interesting way to render a lightening. Didn't know those difference cloads.

  • Thanks, I figured it out now. Great video!

  • I cant seem to get it to work. Please help! When I apply the Solid Noise cloud thing, it doesnt give me the lightning affect? Do you know why this would happen?

  • nevermind, I can get the lightning appearance now. However, when I go to invert, the black doesnt turn to white. :S

  • You probably invert the selection, not the colors. I suspect you are using the old GIMP 2.2 version. In the old version you will find the menu item to invert colors in Image -> Colors -> Invert IIRC.

  • I'm using Gimp 2.2 but do not see Colors under Image. All I see is The Invert under the Select menu. Is there somewhere else I should be looking?

  • Nevermind. I found it under Layer>Colors>Invert. Thanks for the tutorial. Good stuff.

  • wait, never mind, I guess its just cinelerra work :)

  • What's that zoom? is it your screen recorder?

  • Great Tutorial, but I don't have the "Difference Clouds" option that you mentioned. All I have is Plasma and Solid Noise.

  • Watch the entire tutorial instead of just the first few minutes, and things will become clear.

  • WoW!...It is very useful for me as a graphics master!...

  • Wow, that works really well! Now time to experiment.

  • I love your tutorials! It would be great if you added more!

  • if u go to filters>enhance>sharpen and increase the sharpness it gives it a more lightning look. tell me what u think of it. im using gimp 2.2

  • Didn't do much difference to me, but I guess it depends on what range in Levels one uses.

  • I think the red looked best. :D Cool tutorial.

  • Thanks. I've been trying to master this since.

  • Very sweet man. I've been using Gimp for over a year and this is all good new stuff to me. Thank you.

  • good stuff

  • ehhh In my window there is no "color" button, do i have to do something to make it appear?

  • You are probably using 2.2 which have a slightly different menu layout. Look under the Image menu in the image window.

  • ahe yeah. Found it, thanks.

Btw is there any way I can change the language in gimp?

cause it can be kind of confusing.

oh yeah, great video too :D

  • To change language, set the LANG environment variable to an appropriate value. If you set it to C, for example, you will get English.

  • Thank you Enselic sir. Your manual method to create the lightning worked miracles for me. Thank you. =)

  • THANK YOU for this tutorial -- I used it to make illustrations for my book at duffydirect dot com -- let me know what you think of the picture (its in the gallery right on the main page)!!! :-)

  • You just blew my mind man. Great job.

  • wow how you did that screen cast? I have been looking for a Zoom in screencast software. I use record my desktop but I dont think I had that option.

  • I recorded it with recordMyDesktop, then edited it (including adding the zoom effect) using Cinelerra.

  • I don't seem to have differance clouds

  • I don't have the levels either

  • "I don't have the levels either"

Yes you do, but not in the same place, since you are using GIMP 2.2. Look in Layers -> Colors -> Levels.

"I don't seem to have differance clouds"

Just as I say in the video, 2.2 does not have such a filter. At the end of the video I describe how to create the lightning in 2.2.

  • Never mind I figured it out!

  • For some reason, Gimp 2.2 won't let me invert colors!!!Help!!!

  • Your the best bro, thanks alot for making these vids, Im a total nub and scrub when it comes to being an artist, and using photoshop and gimp, so this helps out hardcore. Thanks!

  • Thank u it was NICE! ;D

  • when u did the colors, then levels...where is that on gimp 2.2?

  • nvm i got it

  • this is an awsome tut. i use it for text lighting

  • ty so much

  • I made the lightening after a few trys.

The idea I could re play the video a few times helped alot

  • Very simple and revealing. Specially, the use of Adjust Color Levels is something very useful and very creative.

I can't imagine doing this with other things that are not digital images. Adjusting the level of color input and of color output! GIMP is Great!

  • thank you this is awesome

  • As a guy who both works with GIMP (Among other art programs), and who loves trying to master and maybe even create new special FX driven stuff, this tutorial was quite the godsend for me personally. Thank you.

  • I like such good tuts ;) Everytime when i "play" with gimp, ill find more funny thinks... But i never had a good lightning ^^

    Hmmmm more more more =)

(and a lil sry, cuz of my bad english ^^)

  • Thank you so much for these tutorials. They have really helped to speed up my GIMP workflow. You are a very good teacher.

  • I tried this on gimp 2.2 and it worked! There wasn't a render clouds as difference option though, so I had to create the cloud layer with a difference attribute and merge it down. worked fine :)

  • hmm...I didn't stop there! As a curious person, I tried to play around with it (colorize, edge detect, etc.)

    Here's what I came up with: tinyurl<dot>com/2uq44g :P

  • oh...and you add the clouds to the new layer before merging it ;)

  • can you tell me how to create a difference attribute with clouds because i have only gimp 2.2 is well?

  • new layer > transparent. make the new layer's attribute "difference". then merge the two layers! You figure that out...oh...just right-click on clouds layer > merge down :)

  • nope, i merged down but it still didn't invert

  • Then you probably do Select -> Invert. You don't want to invert the selection, but the colors. Do Layers -> Colors -> Invert instead.

  • hey, i've tried over and over , i dont have the differance cloud so i do it the otherway and it looks right but then i go invert but nothing happens what do i do?

  • You probably don't merge down (Rightclick -> Merge down) the layer with the Solid Noise and in Difference mode. When you invert the solid noise you get solid noise, so if you don't merge down before you Invert, it would appear as if nothing happends. Let me know if I am wrong. Good luck

  • make sure you applied the gausian blur

  • wow

  • great tutorial, but how do you make lightning on just any random picture and not show any blackness in the backround? please answer my question...?

  • Set the layer mode of the layer with the lightning to 'Screen'. That will make black shades become transparent.

  • wow thanks dud. your smart. great job!

  • wooooow, not exactly useful for the way i use gimp (signatures) but it might work for making brushes if you inverted the finished product

  • you do sigs too.

  • man i LOVE your accent-i meen guide hehe i wish i had a accent but i have a normal one =(

  • you forget, normal is all about perspective

  • right i'll just pretend i don't know what perspective meens i think i know what you meen normal is differnt for everyone and my normal wouldn't be for other people

  • can u plzz make more maybe make one on how to make skin look smooth and no blemishes and one on how to change hair color and another on how to change the color in eyes pleeeaasssee... thanks so much

  • ty m8

  • I'm using GIMP 2.2, but the trouble is, I can't find how to invert the colours like you do. I go to 'select', then press 'invert' (ctrl + I) but nothing happens. Can you shed some light on to what I must do to get it to invert please?

    Also, great tutorial. :)

  • Select -> Invert inverts the selection (what was not selected becomes selected, and vice versa).

To invert the colors in 2.2, use Layer -> Colors -> Invert.

    Thanks :)

  • thnx lol i have 2.2

very helpful tutorial. tnx again man :)

  • Thank you :)

  • very nice and detailled tutorial, thanks!

  • Wow, that accent was awesome. I am actually up to putting an own video tutorial into the youtube because there is still another way of making lightnings. Maybe you'll watch mine and then you can laugh about my German accent ;-)

  • Heh, it would be interesting to hear myself without an accent bias :d, people seem to think it's quite special.

Let me know when you have that tutorial up 'n' runnin'!

  • hey when does GIMP 2.4 come out

  • Impossible to say, we are working hard, but there is a lack of developers. We currently have 34 bugs which blocks the 2.4 release.

  • well i would like to see GIMP become better than photoshop

Also i am starting to get the hang of gimp now as i made some decent graphics.

i would also ike to know where you are from cuz your accent is wicked.

  • I'm Swedish :) Weird, I get a lot of comments on my accent

  • Do you mind providing the link for "recordmydesktop" and the video converter? thx

  • Unfortunately YouTube doesn't allow direct linking. However, just google for 'recordMyDesktop' and 'MEncoder'. If you use a Debian-based distro (like Ubuntu), '$ sudo apt-get install recordmydesktop mencoder' should do. Note that MEncoder is documented in the docs to MPlayer.

  • what app did you use to screen capture in video? I can't find one in linux. I plan to do some Gimp tutorials as well. thanks in advance.

  • I've tried a few, and recordMyDesktop is my favorite. Once you've recorded, use FFmpeg to convert it to a video-ediding-friendly-format (like MPEG). Alternatively, use MEncoder directly on the .ogg you get from recordMyDesktop. MEncoder can crop, trim, scale and so on (from commandline).

  • is gimp only for macs?

  • GIMP runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

This video was shot on Linux, more specifically on a distribution named Ubuntu.

  • ok i have windows

    is this "gimp" like photoshop?
