It looks like smoke from a cigarette. But what causes it to be so erratic in a sphere as opposed to almost a straight stream from a tube?

The plasma tube was made by Texan Artist 'Tim Walker' in 1988. If you can track him down, he still makes these (I last spoke to him 2 years ago). He only works with this type of medium though (plasma tubes with two cathode-electrodes). I don't have his contact details at present.
