I think too many people judge people in Goa for smoking and sex etc.Maybe some of them drink and beat up their wife or girlfriend.I first went to Goa in 1986 and it was much less touristic and chilled and most people there were nice both tourists and travellers. There are some delightful tourists who visit Goa, unfortuantly being well educated, well travelled or very nice indeed does not mean you will be safe. Check Patrick Malluzo case. Many of the victims of crime are the nice innocent ones, the drug trafficers and addicts are afforded patronage by the police (because they have a use).

Be very careful in goa most long term tourists and friendly locals have an agenda. Money is the God here so take enough to buy your way out of a problem.

Nice place. Rent a scooter, drive around all day. Head to the Flying Dolphin at sunset, little shack on the beach. They've got one mixed drink on the menu, can't recall the name but it's the one with red wine in it. You'll have trouble speaking let alone walking after a couple of those. Good food as well. Get the garlic-butter tiger shrimp. Things're huge, taste great, and are cheap.
