  • In the southern dialect, the ? and ~ tones have merged so that eg. đả and đã are the same pronunciation. They are distinct in the northern dialect. ~ in the north is somewhat complicated as it starts at a mid level pauses abruptly before rising.

  • The southern accent doesn't differentiate much between ? (hoi) and ~(nga). A northern speaker would pronounce the ~(nga) more distinctively.

  • learning tones is the hardest thing in life. Tones in our languages are used only for exaggeration and intonation not for meanings. We need to get rid of this tendenct first. Such hard task.

  • doesn't sound like there's much of a difference between ba? and ba~, or perhaps my hearing is bad?
