Judy Garland - "The Man That Got Away" (Alternative Take 1)

Whenever I hear Miss Garland sing, my first, and only, reaction is always, WOW! It's always a pleasure, and a treat, to hear Miss Garland sing...Especially when she sings this particular song. Technically, too, it always amazes me how each of the alternate takes of this song varies not much, at all, from the other or from the final print version of the song. The subtlety of the difference in each, to me, is a fine testament to the true genius and artistry of Miss Garland.

This version lacks the emotional punch of the one finally used. And the lighting, the set aren't as interesting.

Thanks for posting this. I saw the whole movie (again) last night on TCM. At the very end of the movie they showed "Alternate Take #2", which I didn't like this much. But this one is great, very in the same league with the one they actually used. I can listen to her rendition of this song over and over (goosebumps)....

I can see why they didn't use this version. Everyone should be aware that she was lip sinking her pre-recorded part. Although incredible, some of her mouth movements didn't match her singing exactly and if anyone noticed, the musicians weren't playing the instruments. Their hand movements didn't match either. I liked the official version better.

I wonder if she's singing live, since it's all in one shot (and I know that's not the way you shoot musicals) but somehow, though she was a perfect lypshincher, it feels live. anybody knows about this audio take?

this is so beautiful, much more relaxed than in the final cut take, with the proper mood, less contrived, but yet....not so "grand"

@bowmister I doubt if its sung live...though whoever thought to give the specific sound acoustic to her voice was genius. It's powerful!

Some said that the wardrobe used by Judy in the other takes was "innapropriate" for the character. And was also said that those previous takes were not 'directed' the right way. If I'm not mistaken, they even changed directors to shoot that scene, after Judy Garland took a break.

Remember in this scene, Norman is off to to the side watching from the shadows and falls for Esther. Perhaps they wanted a more playful scene to compensate for the heavy content of the song? It seems to me, although classic Judy, the Esther character seems older and tired in this take. The final cut seems a bit lighter and younger.

Regardless, to watch Judy Garland and James Mason in this movie is a real treat.
