Noting the Megaman comparison, I once went to a Megaman forum and attempted to argue what a train wreck X6 was in every single way. One person tried to compare it in a positive way to The Lost Levels... having caught up watching this commentary I still don't see anything good about this game or X6. Then again with what I know now about the Mega-fandom, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised at how crazy those fuckers can be...
I don´t know if the amount of stuff in a game affects the memory chip at all. In my case, SM All Stars still keeps my savefiles but my DKC 1 cartdrige died years ago and no longer saves games.
I played Lost Levels and got the Fire Flower at least three times in the first world. And no, I don't want a cookie for that. I just got super fucking lucky.
It wasn't released in America because of difficulty, they didn't release it here because it was an expansion pack and Miyamoto wanted to give us something different. So he took Doki Doki Panic and made a Mario retool of it specifically for America.
I find it hilarious that they didn't release it because it was harder when you consider what happened with the original Devil May Cry 3. Though that could have been an error.
@blazefire159 Kaizo. At least with Lost Levels, you don't need to have savestates to not lose your sanity. I mean, I've beaten Kaizo without savestates, but that was a miracle.
Actually, the creator of the "Problem with Hyper Sonic", GeneralCacti, put it on Youtube, then allowed the creator of Sonic Shorts to use it in the compilation.
oh god...i've been stuck on this game for a long time on world 2-2 i didn't know there was a second invincible block! also i'm playing the original 8-bit version(but on the Wii's Virtual Console, with my trusty Gamecube controller).
Also, they didn't release it in America because they didn't want to risk the popularity of the Mario franchise, based on the reception it received in Japan, as well as the difficulty.
1-Up Trick: On the first level when you stomp the first Koopa Paratroopa, make sure it moves right and go under the short staircase. When the Koopa walks down the short staircase, jump at just the right moment and you'll bounce off the brick block above you and stomp the Koopa Shell just keep mashing the jump button and you'll be fine. As Luigi, you don't have to keep mashing the jump button, so the trick does itself.
If you think Nintendo was sadistic with the level design here, you haven't seen the average ROM hacker.
Seriously, look at my playlists. Namely, the "LP Awesomeness - Mario ROM Hacks" series. And watch some prominent LP'ers drive themselves to the brink of insanity. No, REALLY.
You survive the koopa at 3:55 because of the strange way SMB does collision detection. Basically, as long as you are falling when you touch an enemy, the enemy gets stomped.
Also, difficulty was ALL OVER THE PLACE back then. Us gaijins got harder versions of BattleToads and Dynamite Headdy than Japan did. Possibly because we could rent games. Companies didn't want kids beating the game in a weekend and not buying. And Japan never got StarTropics or its sequel, which were pretty difficult games.
Well, have this in mind. Super Mario Bros. 2 was made only a year after Nintendo dropped in the NES into America. Nintendo just brought gaming credibility, why would they kill their chances by releasing such a difficult game so early on, especially when they just revived an entire industry. I may have worded part of that incorrectly, but I hope I at least explained a little bit of Nintendo's decision.
"World 2-3 of The Lost Levels, supports my theory of how annoying little Fucks, Cheep-Cheeps really are!" And, I've been knowing this since i was 5! -_-
look at the bright side though, although lost levels didn't come out back then. they made super mario 2 which actually is pretty fun, although a transition from a japanese whatchamacallit game. I'm sure mario being such a central franchise for nintendo back then was meant to give the majority of the gamers a good impression. if it was too hard people would just give up. not saying I support that, only that I find it understandable, I guess that might have something to do with that
you know they didnt send this because it was to hard but with the contra games super c contra 3 and contra hard corps they made them all harder in english then in japan what the hell is with nintendo
its funny when you think about mario 2 on nes and snes they remade mario 2 for snes but they put in the chime when u get into the maze things in bowser castle so technally they actually made this game just slightly easier
Over in Japan there is no stigma attached to adults playing video games and watching animated programs, in fact most of the stuff that comes form Japan which is marketed at children over here was specifically reworked to be marketed at children in some way. Pokemon is targeted mainly at teens in Japan, Sailor Moon was for teenage girls, not ten year-old girls, and so on.
the same thing happened in europe we get a shitty Mario 2 (the dream thing) and have lost worlds on the allstars. japan thinks that we suck too, well screw you japan i beat this game in 13min so HA! and i dont care if somesome did it faster. ( I LOVE JAPAN)
Did you know that Led Zeppelin dropped the "a" in Led so that "dense Americans" wouldn't pronounce it like "leed"? Obviously they didn't know about that element on the periodic table, so it comes as no suprise to me that Nintendo thought Americans couldn't handle this game.
i have an original SMB3 famicon japan and SMB3 NES cartridge, there is also a difficulty issue in that game. In japan version, if you have a 2nd power after mushroom (flower, tanooki, leaf etc) and get hit, youll be small mario instantly unlike in US you go back to mushroom. Its not a big deal and hard but way back then man playing that jpn version is really LOL
The difficulty wasn't the only reason that it wasn't released here, it's also cause there weren't enough added features and the graphics were pretty much the same. Guess they didn't wanna feel like they're ripping us off by releasing an expansion.
This is odd timing, just yesterday I rewatched your commentary on the first Mario game. 0.o are you guys spying on me or something and know when to release this stuff?
Anyway, even if it is kinda stupid for Nintendo to not release Lost Levels over here, I can't help but think that it was the right descision. Think about it: Doki Doki Mario 2 has had way more effect on the franchise (Birdo, Shy Guys, Peach doing something, etc) than Lost Levels had.
Noting the Megaman comparison, I once went to a Megaman forum and attempted to argue what a train wreck X6 was in every single way.
