@goldeneye007662 I wonder about that too. I suppose it's because Ayn Rand became famous in popular culture -- I'd like to know how many Ayn Rand fans have ever read the works of John Stuart Mill.
@spmcfar87 When did I say you have to live my way? You're the one saying we need to help people help themselves. I'm saying as a libertarian, you can't force anyone to do anything they don't want to do, even if you think it's for their own good.
@spmcfar87 That statement contradicts the fundamental principle of classic liberalism (the foundation of libertarianism). You can't force people to do something, even if it's making them help themselves.
I used to be a "foolish liberal" before I decided to major in economics. I'm hesitant to call myself a conservative or even libertarian because at heart I still want to help poor people. Just that now I know gov don't know how to help the poor and that more freedom usually brings the best outcome.
How come terrorism doesn't happen in Germany? Italy? Japan? etc? Because they're not savages like radical muslims. Even though I subscribe to the Libertarian ideology, I don't agree with the concept that terrorism happens because we're "occupying" eveyone! Terrorists...i.e. Radical Jihadist Muslims....hate us because we're AMERICANS!!!!
Some of these students are idiots. Having military recruiters on campus is a choice. Goodness gracious. What if some of these students want to join the military, but wouldn't haven't gotten exposure like myself if they haven't come on campus. Slaughtering innocent people? Man these people are dumb. Of course people are against it. But going to war at all doesn't mean unjustified murder or slaughter.
1.) I don't like that David generalizes that Republicans are all bible beaters who talk to God. That's a gross misleading gernealization. I have an opinion on gay marriage, but it's not because I have anything against gay people, I just don;t think we need govt to redfine a word that was not created by govt, but is an instituin that spans continents and cultures.
2.) Let's please not start some civil war between the TP and Libertarians. If we do then the statist wins everytime!!!!
If the money going out is the main concern about wars, then I suggest we do a couple of things"
1.) Get a written request for protection
2.) Outlay SPECIFIC goals, and objectives to be reached.
3.) Fight that damn war to win and destroy the enemy as quickly and efficiently as possible
4.) Construct a way to recoup the cost from beneficiary.
IE : in Iraq, we should negotiate a certain percentage of the countries oil profits to pay for the war effort, and compensate for loss of soldiers lives
The kid with the "slaughter" question. I can't tell where he was coming from. Is he saying that we slaughter innocent people, or is he suggesting that it is immoral to sit back as innocent people are slaughtered?
Sometimes libertarian foriegn policy seems to suggest that it is unjust to kick the crap out a guy who is beating up an old lady. I don't want to be the world police, but would you want to live in a city with no police?
I feel as if Boaz's arguement that the killing of innocent people was justifiable at one point goes against his belief. He frequently speaks against utilitarianism, which he criticizes in his book Libertarianism: A Primer. I wonder if Nozick would agree with Boaz here? Or would Nozick say that the consequences still do not justify the killing?
Look, this was a cool video and I love the liberty movement with every fiber of my being, but doggone it, we look self-congratulatory and arrogant because all of those students were either asking questions specifically to talk about ideas that everyone clearly already knew a lot about or they were actually showing off on national TV. This was a good program, but we need to be a little more image-conscious, y'all!
They totally shut down that guy who asked the "slaughtering civilian" question. It had great potential about civilians getting killed in our wars overseas but it sounded so snarky. BUT the answers he got were good, I kinda expected them to dither a bit at first. Brilliant show!
Mr. Boaz's answer to immigration started good but ended on the "This country was built on immigrants" talking point. The people mentioned went through places like Ellis Island, talk about wise immigration reform instead!
Ugh why do libertarians worship Ayn Rand. I'm a Libertarian, I hate government, but i really think ayn rand was a cunt

I love that most of the students are well dressed and groomed. Very unlike their unwashed, liberal counterparts!
