anyone else surprised that disney hasn't edited this line? For the time period the story is set it would make sense for royalty to have slaves, but they did edit the "Where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face" line in Arabian Nights despite that fitting the time period as well.

Maybe when kids say "my favourite princess..." they include those Disney girls not because they were all born or married into royalty, but because they earn a happily ever after with their actions and strength. It's a romaticism of the term, I know that's not bad. If we want to be technical, we could say none of the girls are princessess, because Disney royalty is nothing like real life. But children who don't exclude, learn that 'birth' and 'marriage' isn't all it takes to be happy.

With Disney, princess is not so much a technical term as it is a whimsical one. The one thing all your points have in common is a male lead role, (i was going to say a knight in shining armor, but in Mulan's case that wouldn't be accurate.), and a happily ever after and isn't that what we all associate with being a princess

They all either rescinded their claims to the throne by marrying peasants (Jasmine) or changing species (Ariel), or were commoners who married into the royal family. The only exception to this is Aurora, who was born a princess and married a prince. Otherwise their titles as 'princesses' are solely ceremonial.
