I was at the Tea Party in Chicago, and there were lots of people calling Obama a 'secret Muslim' and saying he was not an American. I guess that's not technically racist, but it was nasty and bigoted in nature. If the tea parties came away with a bad image, it was their own fault.

I couldn't agree more. That woman's actions (which cannot be attributed to the all CNN.) were despicable and protest is one of the greatest things about the US. Whats really dumb about this is that there were not hundreds of thousands of people nor were there a thousand parties. There were like 30-40 parties and around 15,000 total attended. The reason the media didn't cover it was because it was completely manufactured. It wasn't grass roots and it was so small there have been PETA rallies in individual cities bigger then it. A real grassroots protests movement looks like the NYC anti-iraq war protests, which had more the 500,000 people.

To be grassroots you have to have significant turnout. The biggest tea party was no bigger than 10k (if you doubt that try getting your news from a source that isn't the heritage foundation or associated with it). Also, to be grassroots you can't have been organized by a conservatively funded lobby group (freedomworks) and promoted for over a month on a major news network. There is video that shows FNC TEA PARTY PROTESTS. Fox sponsored rally's are not grassroots. Only the first spark was legit

The mailings were actually a good political idea (although people still don't seem to understand the reason the original tea party took place). But when freedomworks and fox news jumped on the trains and hijacked it, it lost its legitimate populist sentiment.
