Actually the term Han can probably be considered a misnomer in that it is a mixture of ethnic groups under a larger cultural linguistic paradigm. But to say that a person from Guangzhou looks like a person from Hebei. Or that Mongols (not Han)have the same appearance as folks from zhejiang would be for the most part untrue.

@240kankan As far as the Uyghurs are concerned they came to the Tarim basin as their empire in Mongolia collapsed and they probably mixed with the local indo-european populations which had lived there for at least four thousand years so the Uyghur question has it's share of complexity. They are also muslim and as such aspire to self rule. This combined with their rich cultural and warrior past contributes to their distinct identity.

I think it's not mere sensitivity but being rapidly outpopulated in their own territories by Han immigrants that creates the backlash. Imagine if over a period of a few decades Uyghur immigrants became half of the population of Beijing, arriving with all the right connections both political and economic they soon control the local economy.

@240kankan Are you for real? As a matter of fact I've lived all over China and there are definite differences between ethnic groups not just between the Uyghurs and Han. Actually the term Han can probably be considered a misnomer in that it is a mixture of ethnic groups under a larger cultural linguistic paradigm. But to say that a person from Guangzhou looks like a person from Hebei. Or that Mongols (not Han)have the same appearance as folks from zhejiang would be for the most part untrue.

@240kankan As far as the Uyghurs are concerned they came to the Tarim basin as their empire in Mongolia collapsed and they probably mixed with the local indo-european populations which had lived there for at least four thousand years so the Uyghur question has it's share of complexity. They are also muslim and as such aspire to self rule. This combined with their rich cultural and warrior past contributes to their distinct identity.

Obviously there are a great many among the minorities who feel marginalized in your society. There are some things a minority will speak to a foreigner about and not to a Han. If you respected them you wouldn't be colonizing their ancestral lands and the title "autonomous" would actually mean something.

I think it's not mere sensitivity but being rapidly outpopulated in their own territories by Han immigrants that creates the backlash. Imagine if over a period of a few decades Uyghur immigrants became half of the population of Beijing, arriving with all the right connections both political and economic they soon control the local economy.
