Beautiful partly because you are blessed with a big left hand for some great sounding voicing. One question on the theory, I thought D Major in Ionian mode starts with E, not from D; and it ends at D, not C#.
Makes me wonder how notation software would try to quantitize my improvisation; rubato really freaks it out! I understand why you have that on though. You are offering proof that it is in fact only 7 notes, good for you. Awesome ear man!
you are using the notes of the D major scale.. but remember all the modes of the major scale are the same notes.. modes is just the notes relating to the chord. Play a D major and play Ionian over it.. play a A chord but use only the notes from D ionian and you have A mixolydian. you just have to hear that A is now home base of that scale. Still I love this piece of music it is beautiful. I just don't think its All in Ionian.. ionian sounds like happy pirate music ..
What a wonderful way to start the day. Some of the most beautiful pieces look simple on paper or from the note choices yet are able to stir the most complex emotions. Afterall, Bach pretty much boiled it down to 1,4,5 right? and look at all that's come from that. It's infinite.
amazing!, congrats!. i have a question though. Why exactly this piece is modal instead of tonal? i still hear the fifth grade dominant as the main tension in the piece.
i have some trouble figuring the difference between mayor and ionian.
Is this the original sound of the CP300? It sounds much richer than I expected in that case. And yes, as always, good work! I think it's amazing how certain notes automatically sounds relaxing.. :)
@theivoryhermit Thanks, nothing but playing a lot within the idiom. I improvise while limiting myself to certain scales or modes. It narrows the choices and challenges me to do more from a limited palette.
Beautiful. When I improvise I find it hard to add melody to it. I can do a lot harmonically with D major but my piano skills aren't great enough to play figure out melodies as well... but you have hit the spot!
Fantastic video. Do you feel that you could have gone "longer" (made it even better) if you were able to modulate around and use other chords than in one mode? When watching this I realize that I should spend more time improvising in the church modes alone, there is so much to be done and 7 minutes to be filled:) Great work.
What if you were to play D Major(Dorian Mode) ... would the chord progression for the left hand bass have to be within the 7 notes you hit with the right hand or could it be any note with the D major scale? Sorry, I'm new to improvising and just trying to understand how this works ...
Yes the bass notes are also part of the 7 note scale. Part of this piece is played using chords made up from the scale and parts of it are 'pan-tonal- where any of the 7 notes are used and there is not a traditional chord structure.
People mention all the wonderful harmony here that comes from the 7 notes scale...but what I hear (which is more amazing) is that this is one long, lyrical song of praise or something...you could put words to it..!
Respect from me dude..!!! I'm sure you have lightened the load for the multitudes who have watched this!
Wow, man, that was amazing! You have a wonderful gift for music. Now can you do a little tutorial to give people a better idea of what your doing? I know its only 7 notes, but your playing some pretty complicated stuff that Id love to hear more about
i really enjoyed the movement and voicings over the second and sixth modes... your use of dissonance with tighter chords was perfect it wasn't over done and always placed perfectly.. i really enjoyed the bass movement around 4:24.. lydian was beautiful
I don't know if you're married or not, or even have a girlfriend, but from a woman's point of view, that piece is sooooo beautiful that if you tell a woman you wrote it for her (provided she doesn't know better), she's a goner! Awesome piece. I hear your heart in the music. Beautiful!
1. Maybe free-form thing, but certainly good enough for the movies. You're a really fine pianist, and this piece has real merit.
2. I'll be buying some of your stuff in a month or so. Classical; (met BLS once), really rusty. I need the written transcripts to shorten the curve. Do you put those in randomly, or do you have a transcript in each lesson? (I'll take them apart and make my own drills.)
I haven't quite got the editing of scores from midi files down yet, so just the one transcript on my website done by someone else. Maybe I'll get better at it! Thanks.

I think the basic meaning of the term as it is most commonly used is - atonal improvisation. It would be interesting to hear you do something completely wacko.
i would so very much like to play this beautiful composition. Great chord movement, simple but leading melody, and great dynamics. you never went to tonic either. would you mind breaking this down?

Masterpiece can be recognised that it's pure and it doesn't pretend. Like this. It reminds me some of the slow Šostakovič "Preludes and Fugues".

Thanks for that beautiful insight into your musical thinking and emotion. Very well done (also the "split video" and realtime notation).

this was great dude. . . the hardest part would be just using this modal notes, as it can be tempting to use different scales. . .thanks man

It's great to hear an exploration of a simple theme played so well. A fine demonstration of the beauty inherent in the fundamental structure of music.

nice to hear, simply played - most difficult thing it is to play only sound that should be played an no other.

oh my goodness. You, sir, are extremely generous with your postings! As KJ said, "Music is not in the scale", and yet, sometimes it is!

I Like the contrast of dynamics and the stretch voicings, very beautiful. Sounds like film music to me!

Music that emanates true emotions.
I think that in this "Improvisation" the meaning of the music has done its task.
Simply Great, thanks Tom.
