I grew up on the Outer banks. I have surfed and skimmed my entire life. The type of balance it requires to maintain speed and ride the wave is more difficult than surfing. Skimming not only relies on the balance to surf the actual wave, but also relies on the timing......running with your feet I might add, adds exhaustion to your legs which reluctantly enough are the very same legs you need to keep your balance.

If you are strong you can stay in the water all day and stand up really easy surfing!, and if you are thin and athletic and have a little of balance you can stay the whole day skimming and catch maybe a wave... but I do both and I seriously think that catch a wave surfing is easier than catch a wave skimming (talking about decent waves in both), that's just my opinion

Personally I do both. Hit the nail on the head with the comment its for when the surf isnt that great. But to be honest they compliment eachother. When your not surfing winter storms in Nootka or Tofino, you can be wave skimming in Port Renfrew using the same weighting techniques, and having a blast!
