Vengerov, Bell and Hahn should stop and learn from Oistrakh here: the first two about how not to contort histrionically and unmusically; the third about the need to be moved at least somewhat by the music before putting bow to string. Perhaps to sing it a little first, to unfreeze oneself a bit.
Oistrakh is totally moved by the music here including, in a perfectly non-histrionic way, physically. Including in his foot-work; for example,in his preparation, beginning 6:40, for his entry at 6:51 for the conclusion.
The 6 people who disliked this must have either clicked dislike on accident or must be jealous of the man's mad skills. Oistrakh=one of the best violinists of all time.
Superbe interprétation, je l'écoute (de façon obsessive) pour la 1000ème fois. Quel grand violoniste, mais quel grand violoniste! Merci, Cleopatra, pour cette vidéo, tu m'as fait chaud au coeur :-)
The one thing lacking in this is a first-rate orchestra. But if you listen to Oistrakh playing this concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Ormandy, he doesn't have quite the same spontaneity as in this version. That is why this video is a priceless treasure.
I haven't listened to all the available recordings of this concerto but I don't imagine that it could be better played. Oistrakh's command of the violin is supernatural and he nails this concerto as firmly and decisively as it ever could be. Stupendous playing unlikely ever to be matched.
Shaham and Vengerov are great - I grew up on Gil Shaham. But nobody, NOBODY, has a heart like Oistrakh. His violin does not play, it SINGS. Chants, wails, serenades, croons.
He is the greatest that is on record. He is head, shoulders and knees above all.

@mshani I think this is not the best version or recording, the best for me is with Mr. Christian Ferras and H.V. Karajan, I uploaded once but Youtube blocked it, try to find it in Grooveshark, its far from this one.
@hobbitgnr Are you sure you are referring to the correct version? I just listened to it and in my opinion didnt seem to be anything special to compare with this Oistrakh Interpretation..
The best bow arm of any violinist in history, as my teacher said to me once. It shows in the sound, which has been the only reason I've loved listening to Oistrakh. However, I grew up on the Heifetz recording of the Sibelius, which feels like being in the center of a hurricane, and can't help but feel underwhelmed by every other recording I've heard. It takes awhile to re-attune my ears to more conservative violinists like Oistrakh, who might have been my standard without Heifetz.
In the last day or two I think I've listened to every Sibelius on youtube, and although there are many wonderful performances (Minz, Ferras, Hahn,Chung to name only a few) when I come back to Oistrakh, I feel like I've landed on another planet. This is really the standard for all times.
Ferras plays this concerto in a much more passionate and yet sensitive way, like Sibelius meant it I think. Oistrakh is a great "professional" violin player, like a russian soldier : very hard working, very disciplined, and does'nt seem to enjoy what he is doing !
@Metalloys The soul which smiles in sublimity is not in the smile, and its joy outstrips enjoyment. You're right, Oistrakh can't be "enjoying" the performance. Rather he's locked into a certain joy-in-performance propelled along by will, passion, and iron discipline. No one enjoys their passion ... their passion enjoins them. It's actually better than enjoyment.
Maestro Oistrakh Sibelius' under Ormandy with Philadelphia Phil. is his best ever recording. Being a Studio recording Oistrakh himself as well as the Conductor himself made it a Mistake free so that the American critics highly acclaimed it.
They were both born in the Russian Empire. Oistrakh was actually Ukrainian.
I do know that we Finns don't like Russians too much. It might have something to do with the fact that they tried to invade our country twice and we had to even pay them war reparations worth $300.000.000. They shot their own troops and blamed Finland for it and then attacked.
Someone once tole me that there are one and a half of violinists in the world: Oistrakh counts as one and the rest of the field as half. I guess that is a little extreme but not too much off the mark.
that's just simply amazing. i am studying this music right now myself and i hope to one day be like that. in the beginning i did notice he got off tempo a little bit but hey, its still amazing. all the great violinists have played this concerto. makes me happy knowing that I'm from Finland just like Sibelius.
at this level of playing, its a question of taste... But I know that sibelius himself really liked the way Ida Haendel played it. Personnally I like Ginette Neveu's and Christian Ferras' interpretations. But Oistrakh tchaikovsky concerto is, to my ears, the best.
