  • For me, the best Sibelius ever!!!!!

  • Around 5.00 it makes me want to do a tango

  • I love this melody 1:30

  • I love the harmonics around 5:00

  • The greatest......

  • No maaaa!!

  • Thanks for the cougher at the beginning - That was a nice 2-second overture... (sarcasm)

  • Heifetz had tone and accuracy. But Oistrakh had soul.

  • @cynic150 Heifetz had soul too. But in a different way...

  • @cynic150 Oistrakh had tone too :D

  • absolutely brilliant.

  • 1:45... intonation is phenomenal..

  • Meisterhaft !

  • This is amazing. I can listen to it again and again. His playing touches souls.

  • like a tornado

  • Each time i watch this video i want to fav it again, and again. Oistrakh is a giant, you said it.

  • Vengerov, Bell and Hahn should stop and learn from Oistrakh here: the first two about how not to contort histrionically and unmusically; the third about the need to be moved at least somewhat by the music before putting bow to string. Perhaps to sing it a little first, to unfreeze oneself a bit.

  • The 6 people who disliked this must have either clicked dislike on accident or must be jealous of the man's mad skills. Oistrakh=one of the best violinists of all time.

  • Damn Russians...

  • i love how it looks like someone else's arm lol attached to his body lol =) i love this

  • How beautiful is this........takes my breath away!

  • Spellbinding, absolutely spellbinding. Maxim Vengerov, eat your heart out.

  • I AM LISTENING AGAIN,AGAIN,AND AGAIN TO THIS ABSOLUTELY MAJESTIC,DIVINE PERFORMANCE !

  • A magnificent performance by a great violinist!

  • Mao Tse Tung on violin. Or his shaking cheeks remind me of Nixon, somehow all three of them have been in China.

  • @cassandra5322 mad remarks !

  • Comment removed

  • I just close my eyes and get lost. Love it!

  • huge cheek, good playing with shaking his cheeks

  • Potente! Oistrakh posee el imperio de la inspiración!, su dominio es absoluto! gracias por compartir este video extraordinario!

  • The one thing lacking in this is a first-rate orchestra. But if you listen to Oistrakh playing this concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Ormandy, he doesn't have quite the same spontaneity as in this version. That is why this video is a priceless treasure.

  • @MadAuralSkills wonderful remarks !

  • love it

  • Simply incredible!

  • perpetual admirerer, am I of him and this movement

  • perpetual admirerer, am I of him

  • love his super fat chicks and incredible sound.

  • It seems 6 people can do it better than him by pressing the dislike button ;)

  • awesome.

  • Oistrakh - the representative of that generation which was served to art. Today art is served by the VIP, like that Vengerov, Kremer.

  • I believe that Sibelius when he wrote this work, could not imagine such a brilliant performance.

  • I love the nonchalent way he plays the final note... it's as if he's thinking "too easy...".

  • I haven't listened to all the available recordings of this concerto but I don't imagine that it could be better played. Oistrakh's command of the violin is supernatural and he nails this concerto as firmly and decisively as it ever could be. Stupendous playing unlikely ever to be matched.

  • What makes this version even more outstanding is Mr. Rozhdestvenski interpretation. Far more interesting than anyone I've heard sofar.

  • he just doesnt seem human.....

  • Truly the greatest interpretation. David Oistrakh was, and still is, a violin god.

  • hermoso!

  • Sublime. Absolutely sublime.

  • Thank you!!!! I missed hearing the Oistrakh interpretation of this piece. It's unrivaled.

  • josevln,

Shaham and Vengerov are great - I grew up on Gil Shaham. But nobody, NOBODY, has a heart like Oistrakh. His violin does not play, it SINGS. Chants, wails, serenades, croons.

He is the greatest that is on record. He is head, shoulders and knees above all.

  • @mshani I think this is not the best version or recording, the best for me is with Mr. Christian Ferras and H.V. Karajan, I uploaded once but Youtube blocked it, try to find it in Grooveshark, its far from this one.

  • @hobbitgnr Are you sure you are referring to the correct version? I just listened to it and in my opinion didnt seem to be anything special to compare with this Oistrakh Interpretation..

  • @OBERONSTAR Yes, search for it in Grooveshark, this is the exact name: Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47, I. Allegro moderato, good luck ;D

  • @hobbitgnr I still prefer this ;)

  • Oistrakh and Hilary Hahn plays with the best technique, but Shaham and Vengerov plays with excellent technique and a big heart.

  • this is not a bow, is a sword. simply great

  • The best bow arm of any violinist in history, as my teacher said to me once. It shows in the sound, which has been the only reason I've loved listening to Oistrakh. However, I grew up on the Heifetz recording of the Sibelius, which feels like being in the center of a hurricane, and can't help but feel underwhelmed by every other recording I've heard. It takes awhile to re-attune my ears to more conservative violinists like Oistrakh, who might have been my standard without Heifetz.

  • @aimson what do you think of Ferras's version?

  • In the last day or two I think I've listened to every Sibelius on youtube, and although there are many wonderful performances (Minz, Ferras, Hahn,Chung to name only a few) when I come back to Oistrakh, I feel like I've landed on another planet. This is really the standard for all times.

  • so many colors!

    it's almost overwhelming.

  • Have you listened to Christian Ferras? with the Berlin Philharmonic and von Karajan

  • THE BEST INTERPRETATION EVER

  • Ferras plays this concerto in a much more passionate and yet sensitive way, like Sibelius meant it I think. Oistrakh is a great "professional" violin player, like a russian soldier : very hard working, very disciplined, and does'nt seem to enjoy what he is doing !

  • @Metalloys The soul which smiles in sublimity is not in the smile, and its joy outstrips enjoyment. You're right, Oistrakh can't be "enjoying" the performance. Rather he's locked into a certain joy-in-performance propelled along by will, passion, and iron discipline. No one enjoys their passion ... their passion enjoins them. It's actually better than enjoyment.

  • @BrucknerMotet

very nice said , clever stranger.,,no one...''

  • Maestro Oistrakh Sibelius' under Ormandy with Philadelphia Phil. is his best ever recording. Being a Studio recording Oistrakh himself as well as the Conductor himself made it a Mistake free so that the American critics highly acclaimed it.

  • This is beautiful. Great job.

  • 3:00 awesome!!

  • ha, i'm 15, and I play this movement with an orchestra tomorrow.

    its gonna be amazing.

thank you for posting this, Oistrakh is simply amazing.

  • @fiddlegirl101 If you can please post ur sibelius 3rd mvt on youtube. Everyone is anticipating to watch it

  • @bountyhanz okay (: I will as soon as i can. What makes you think everyone is anticipating to watch it?

  • Amazing strength and inspiration!

  • Oistrakh plays superbly here. He was, after all, born in the same country as Sibelius.

  • @IronHorse4642 no...sibelius was from finland, and oistrakh was russian...big difference...they don't like russians in finland.

  • @scapaflowu48

They were both born in the Russian Empire. Oistrakh was actually Ukrainian.

I do know that we Finns don't like Russians too much. It might have something to do with the fact that they tried to invade our country twice and we had to even pay them war reparations worth $300.000.000. They shot their own troops and blamed Finland for it and then attacked.

  • @IronHorse4642 I'm sure the Finns don't need to be reminded that Hämeenlinna and Odessa were once both part of the vast Russian empire.

  • @BrucknerMotet

Yes, most of my countrymen do know that.

  • SIEMPRE ESPECTACULAR!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm in high school and i can play almost all of his pieces!!!!

But he teaches me how to play professional!

  • Someone once tole me that there are one and a half of violinists in the world: Oistrakh counts as one and the rest of the field as half. I guess that is a little extreme but not too much off the mark.

  • that's just simply amazing. i am studying this music right now myself and i hope to one day be like that. in the beginning i did notice he got off tempo a little bit but hey, its still amazing. all the great violinists have played this concerto. makes me happy knowing that I'm from Finland just like Sibelius.

  • Just perfect accuracy and so strong sound!!! Geniale!!!!!

  • LOL 5 people put a thumbs down to this

    that's just funny

  • That, ladies and gentlemen, is the definition of skill.

  • Increíble..... sin comentarios!!!!!!!

  • I CAN NOT STOP LISTENING

  • he's a bomb!

  • It's amazing, How he change color of the sound

  • Neither bodily Lucifer could be play better than David Oistrack!!!

  • Ogni commento è superfluo. Ad oggi nessun paragone è possibile!!!

  • He, by far, has the best interpretation of this piece!!

  • @facetious6108able

at this level of playing, its a question of taste... But I know that sibelius himself really liked the way Ida Haendel played it. Personnally I like Ginette Neveu's and Christian Ferras' interpretations. But Oistrakh tchaikovsky concerto is, to my ears, the best.

  • Oh yeah, classical violin power! Well, I guess this is romantic. Oistrakh-incredible

  • astounding.

  • Гениально

  • @russianbee GENIAL

  • i heard so many times this piece....and his interpretation is absolutely the best ever heard!

    he s the bomb!

for these romantic concerts he's a giant!

  • 3:00-3.15

He made those notes look like drinking a tall glass of beer. Hats off.

  • cleopatra11 thanks for posting this magnificent VC played by this master

  • i'll never play this piece, cause it's been climbed before to the peak, right here.

  • wow, this is some recording. ive heard them all, and this is command performance!!

  • Отличная итерпретация! Давид Ойстрах - Великий скрипач!

  • Colossal

  • Granite!

  • Comment removed

  • Certified Intergalactic!

  • so good, but was so good at that time

  • Сначала сыграй так как Ойстрах "In that time". Давид Ойстрах - отец нынешних скрипачей - многие современные скрипачи на него сейчас ровняются!

  • Simply the best!

  • Pride of the Soviet Union!

  • Pride of Mankind

  • I CAN NOT STOP LISTENING

  • best mvt.

  • @LiaSlytherinSnape SUPERB DIVINE

  • @AKSTERSKY YOU´RE DAMN RIGH SIR !

  • @LiaSlytherinSnape i agree

  • I agree with cellogirl, that's why I admire Sibelius and this part of concerto!

I have a CD with Heifetz performance - he is perfect but dont know which is better

  • OMG- just re-watched this for the first time in a while. 8 yrs as a very successful pro- Oistrach (et al) always remind me that i am but a very hard working dilitante. Absurdly good!

  • A monstrous piece!!! Sibelius was Finlands greatest composer ever and Oistrakh was a monster violinist!

  • It shouldn't be big - this isnt a mahler symphony.

  • still i feel as the 3rd mvt is the big finale or big boom so to speak of the piece... and im not excepcting a 120 member orchastra it jus looks alot smaller then ususall...

  • OISTRAKH IS A GIANT!

  • 1:50- 2:26 BEST part. Doesn't it sound like a tango?

  • How can this ever sound like a tango? A tango is in 2/2, 2/4 or 4/4, but this is a clear 3/4......

  • Is this the famous "Oistrakh" Stradivarius which was stolen in the 90s?

  • Yes, perhaps you're right, the violin was stolen in 1996 and even lost "Oistrakh 1671" .

  • hhey dude I am absolutely sure that oistrakh violin is called marsick and not oistrakh right??

  • they renamed it...,

  • Love this music.

  • Wow! Oistrakh's sound rocks! 5 stars but just because there is no more, I would give it 15!

  • ох, блииин))))вот это звук)))

  • Most true heavy music...

  • HEAVENLY MUSIC

  • thats a loud ass cough @ the begining lol

  • simply awesome.

His Sibelius always blows up my mind!

  • What limited amount of Oistrakh I had heard in the past didn't make much of an impression on me. But this, whoa brother! I have a recording of Ferras doing this and I always loved that as well. Looks like I'll have to get this one too : )

violatione: I have heard him do the Wieniawski duet and it is great as well.

  • Я в прострации....)))))))

  • ALL HAIL DAVID OISTRAKH!

  • I have a new repect for David. You all have to listen to His and Igors youtube recording of the Wieniawski duet that Perlman and Zukerman always perform. And then thank me because it is one of the best demonstrations of violin technique that I've ever seen!

  • @violatione I have an admiration for him since the first time I heard him; say 60 years ago; and I can not stop listening to this movement,

    cheers

  • Man's power sound

  • Hey guys! What do you all think of Nicolas Koeckerts youtube recording of this movement?

  • and i thought hilary hahn was amazing at this.

but oistrakh just blows her away.

  • Hillary Hahn plays 3rd moevement too slow. She's a little cold, though.

  • Hers is more connected, and probably just as good. Her tone is probably a tad better than his in some places. Overall, I can't decide which is better ---they are probably equal.

  • she's right, it is a millasecond behind the sound

  • maybe it's your satellital receptor... LOL... sorry bad joke...

  • 4:40 my heart rips apart =D

  • she didn't know what she was talking about...

  • the sound is a split second slower than the video.

  • I LOVE it !! My Favourite !!!

  • Wow! Simply awesome & breathtaking! What a brillant performance best I have ever seen! Amazing!!!

  • one of the greatest performances I have ever heard. simply breathtaking. bravo!

  • Seems transmitted straight from his being, with no filters or constraints at all. Magnificent physical communication of quite complex ideas.

  • Oistrakh ROCKS :D

  • Amazing !!! I love David Oistrakh !

    His sound is wonderful !

    Bravo bravo bravooooooooo

  • This is so AMAZING!!!

  • His sound is THE sound

  • Oistrakh is great. Another brilliant performances of this piece (there are all on youtube) are: Heifetz, Gitlis and Ferras. I recomment all them.

  • Wow! He makes the sibelius concerto look so easy! Amazing!

  • has anyone got any other videos/recordings of oistrach/ kreisler/ perlman or zuckerman to post - vengerov doesn't even come close to any of them!!

  • "vengerov doesn't even come close to any of them!!"

    What a great truth!

  • И тут звук отстаёт, эх, жалко, небыло тогда хорошей аппаратуры, а ведь такое клёвое исполнение!

  • Once in a while, rarely, there is a musician to whome the music speaks intimately. That combined with a rare talent and a phenominal ear, make musicians like this. Pinchas Zukerman is another. Listen to his Bach. It takes more than playing all the notes correctly and in tune, yes?

  • Awesome tempo. Very good.
