  • fantastic. that is all.

  • Hang on - Why didn't I know about you until now? You're the best guitar player I've heard on youtube (ok -- adjusting for my personal taste -- but that's all that matters to me). You're the only person I've heard to master that Graham multipick drone on the A. This is incredible!

  • very cool

  • You are an amazing guitar player, I first thought it was Davy himself :o Do you perform somewhere sometime?

  • @Robkenn Well, many thanks. Used to run folk clubs in UK. Now just play at home.

  • Hey,

I'm returning to your great work once again : ) but I can't seem to locate your website anymore. Did you take it down? Could you repost it or msg me the link? I haven't saved your tabs and wouldn't like to lose your great renditions.

    Thanks,

    K

  • @kielbarry Now at: gvetstabs.weebly.com/

  • What tuning is this in? Also, at what fret did you put your capo? Just double checking. Thanks!

  • @Audiofalcon7 Hi - no capo, standard tuning.

  • @ddsmboy Oh wow. Would've sworn that was a capo there, haha. Okay, thank you.

  • hey this sounds amazing, ive been trying to work out this one my self... is there any chance you could create a how to video or provide me a tab, wold be much apreciated!

  • @branded44 - Expand the notes I've put about this piece - there's a link to my tab for it. Best of luck.

  • just found this - really nicely played! - good clean technique and you caught the spirit of the tune very well!!!

  • Cool! One of my favorite jazz tunes.

  • bravo! one of the very few 'covers' that work, in fact, quayle is so good that it hardly counts as a cover but an original interpretation. what a relief! all those dreary drab covers of bert and john and, i daresay, davy ... i dread clicking on those renderings but i hit gold here.

  • That's praise indeed - thank you very much for your genuine words.

    Richard.

  • Wow!

  • That's just brilliant! One for the ever growing list of things to have a go at.

  • Go for it - I'll look forward to hearing you play it....

  • Awesome!!! Davy would be proud of you!

  • Kind words indeed - thank you !!

  • Wow, this really is an excellent performance. Beautiful. Thanks for posting.

  • Thanks LiteGauge - great piece to play.

  • amazing.

i wish i could play this.

    thanx for the tab.

  • I like this tune.Your Playing's GREAT!

  • Thanks Zygen - I love your arrangements of old '60s pop songs - my era !!

  • great playing. I too am a fan of the sadly recently deceased Davy Graham.

Never got the kudos he should have.

  • Fantastic! Looking forward to checking out the tab for this.

  • Holy smokes! Fantastic... Just Fantastic

  • Thanks for the comments. He was a great and imaginative player.

  • Excellent playing!!, so much crap on here but you playin from the soul man, great sound too, tried your tab..brilliant, are you a teacher?

You really catch the spirit of Davey, well done, more please

  • Hi John - many thanks for your comments. I missed this 2 weeks ago. Not a teacher, though my son Tom Quayle is.

  • fantastic! I was introduced to Davys music only 12 months ago and it has taken my guitar playing into areas never thought existed. This tune is one of my fav on the album folk, blues and beyond. How is it played, are there any of davys scores on the net and what is the tuning ??? can anyone point me into the right direction to help me play like davy?? keep burning .

  • I've done a tab a long time ago - needs some tidying, then I'll post a link to it in the info with this piece - check back.

    Thanks for you comments!

    Richard.

  • That would be great! I've tried this version numbers of times but couldn't get it properly. This video helps already, but a tab would be perfect! Thanks in advance.

    Ed

    P.S. Great version!

P.P.S. Heard the news today about his death. Another hero gone ;( May he rest in peace!

  • I did hear of his death, last night at a gig. Really sad. Another of my guitar heroes......

The tab link is in the info for this piece - enjoy.

    Richard

  • Wow. That's quick. I'll try it tonight. Many thanks!

  • nice one! would be nice if u posted more davey graham!

  • BTW I once saw Charlie Mingus' widow on tv and she referred to this tune as 'Better Get Hit In Your Soul' and this tune certainly does that. The other title works equally well as your soul is exactly where good music should get in innit?

  • I've also seen it listed as 'Hit'. Many thanks for your great comments. He was a superb arranger in the '60s and an inspiration to many of us.

  • Triffic - dynamic playing really full of vitality!! This is an arrangement that is nearly 50 years old and yet still sounds ahead of it's time. Davy's ability, in his prime, to take the whole track of anything, in this case a jazz combo tune, and put it onto one guitar is really quite staggering. More Davy Graham stuff please Mr. Quayle - how about Sarah, Tristano, Panic Room Blues, Rooty, Ignunt Oil, Afrika or Mna na hEirann or anything you like - your playing is just tremendous.

  • That was amazing, I didn't know Davey made an arrangement of this. One of the movements in the Pentangle track "Waltz" reminisces of the part you play at :43. I recognized that they took the part from Better Git it in Your Soul, but hearing you play this on guitar makes me wonder if they borrowed the guitar arrangement from Davey Graham.

  • Thanks a lot - Davy was a huge influence on them and on lots others at the time. Much of the style was borrowed, but then look how Led Zep ripped Bert Jansch's Blackwaterside arrangement with almost NO changes.

    Richard.

  • I just realized that Casbah from Bert's first record is a loose interpretation of this same song. What record did Davey record his version on?

  • Casbah is definitely Bert's interpretation of Davy'y middle section of this piece, with a few pretty additions. Davy recorded this piece on 'Folk, Blues and Beyond', a really great album and his best IMHO. His version of 'Ballad of the Sad Young Men' is superb, as are several blues standards that he does.

  • Went back to watch this again, and I see you've made a tab! Thank you so much! I have a request for John Renbourn's Train Tune if you have the time or inspiration to tab it out.

  • Undoubtedly Davy has been one of my early heroes. Thanks for your comments.

  • Greetings from cold Norway.

A magnificent performance. Davey Graham is one of the best, and it always warms my heart to see such good versions of his tunes.

    Stay well.
