It's not entirely communication. The 3-horn blast is a signal that the ship is departing. As the QV is already pushing away from the dock, this is obviously a game between the skippers (which is itself a common practice among passernger ships)

@klgbjd The cost of bringing her up to modern safety requirements is very high as she has lots of wood and an odd internal design that makes it difficult to find your way around. Plus half of her is made of aluminium, which is expensive to maintain after 40 years.

@cholliday666 Its not so much the cost of modernising her its more the fact that as she gets older she costs more to repair, And because the hull is aluiminuim you can't maintain it easily. The fact that she burned oil in a high preasure boiler system which snorts fuel. And as it costs more and more to fill'er up its just not economial to run her anymore :(

You will definitely enjoy the Queen Mary 2. I have been on there a few times and it is a really nice ship and I hope to go on there again soon. There are so many activities which you can do during the day and you will never get bored on the ship. One of my favorite activities was going to the planetarium.
