I used to turn all the lights off when this jingle came before the Pink Panther cartoons and one night my dad creeped in from behind the couch and shake it when the dramatic high notes played. I jumped off the couch scared off my butt.
I remember seeing this on the VHS of The Plague Dogs. This logo followed by the ominous intro to that film (and the film in general) led to me being very creeped out whenever I saw this!
@roadragecafe holy shit me too. I'd have to cover my ears and look away before I watched Rocky. This and the intro of ghostbusters where they zoom in on the lion statue. Terrifying to a child.
I`m sorry, I`m a theatre projectionist, and I always thought this was the ugliest version of the U.A. logo. My fav. was the one from the 1970`s Don`t mean to insult it, it just always turned me off every time i ran a film and had to see THIS logo on the screen.
@amberola1b By any chance did that 70s version have the catchy bass guitar music? If it does, do you happen to know where I might find it on YouTube? Thanks.
@TheEsquire212 E.T. scared the shit out of me in the early 80's. I threw that green VHS tape over to the neighbor's yard, never to be seen again. Saw ET 20 years later and it was a pretty good movie! lol
OMG, who comes up with schitt like this? If that music wasn't they most doom filled music...Especially that creepy beginning and the slowly spinning logo. I don't think I was ever in a dark room when this came on growing up, but thank goodness I wasn't. I would've crapped my pants! lol
I used to be in scared awe of this logo when I was little. I loved it. It looked like a giant metal monolith turning slowly toward you with chilling, awe inspiring music. It was deep to me as a kid. "What does it MEAN???" (lok Double Rainbow). It will always remind me of Poltergeist.
@Spike20TRILLION Yep definitely the best united artist logo. but the Village roadshow early 80's and the Greater Union tunnel cinema logo which i posted is also great. I'm sure Hoyt's had a good one, there must be heaps more. I'll put up the Seven Keys logo for all you Aussies out there

Great, the best 80's film logo. What a pitty United Artists is going down the drain thanks to Transamerica and MGM. What a great studio it was in the 70's. It's all gone...
Why is it cut off early!?!?!?! Jeez! No disrespect, but that ruins it when the end is cut short like that. For the full, unbutchered logo/theme, check out "United Artists Tournant" (should be listed on the right side of the this page).
Ugh, I used to hate this logo and the jingle way back when...was always scary. I remember this from the Pink Panther videos I used to rent, and I also found this on an old copy of Spaceballs at the video store I used to work in. It's just sooooo overdramatic. I'm not terrified of it now, in fact, it sorta pumps one up for the movie that's coming up, don't you think?
This is not older than the 80s. It debuted in 1982 on "Rocky III." MGM/UA put this logo at the beginning of older films in place of the old Transamerica logo because of a stipulation that MGM was to remove all Transamerica references from UA's films (when Transamerica sold MGM, it was still using the T-flower logo as its corporate logo).
Didn't David Gordon Green used this logo for his film "Undertow". I didn't see the whole film but parts of it and I remeber seeing this UA logo instead of the newer logo.
Wasn't there a UA logo in the 60's at the end of "Outer Limits" that had "United Artists" spelled in white between parentheses and when the moved "United Artists" was spelled in black then the parenthses came together to form "UA?"
this logo can be found on most 1982-1986? vhs tapes by cbs/fox and mgm. if it is releasesd by ua, it may show up. however, the mgm/ua 1986 logo showed up on the 1995 re-issue of octopussy.
i have a odd stereo version on " you only live twice", 1984 cbs/fox video. the first half (the quiet part) has a duphonic like effect on the right and normal on the left.
as soon as it goes loud, it is in true stereo- a bit more crisp.
Isn't this magic? I thought "I'd like to listen to that United Artists theme like in the eighties". I went Youtube on the off chance and would you believe it!!
This always gave me the chills (in a good way) - and still does. Amazingly powerful theme, and simple, yet aesthetically pleasing graphics. Possibly the best logo intro ever.
I love it. Dark and sad sounding, then extremely majestic. This is pure awesome. And OmicronXI, the only DVD i've seen this logo on is the '07 release of "The Secret of NIMH". But it's on quite a few CBS-FOX James Bond tapes, "From Russia With Love" for example.
I have this logo on an original copy of The Secret of Nimh from 1982. Sadly, this logo is plastered over with the 1994 logo, though; because I have Rocky 3 and the 1982 UA logo's after the prototype CBS/FOX Video logo!
I remember seeing this logo at the beginning of a pre-48 Warner Brothers cartoon along with the AAP logo came after that. I don't remember the WB cartoon where they usually had the UA open. I have the movie "West Side Story" on VHS that has the same logo shown on this clip.
I'm amazed at how these things used to scare us back then. It's gotta be fun being a parent and watch your kids get scared at such things. I agree with Takeshi357
I vaguely remember it with the Pink Panther cartoons, but I personally think it's even worse when seen on the original video release of "The Plague Dogs". There's something extremely unsettling about hearing this creepy music, and then seeing the opening credits for that film start... (And if you want to see what I mean, I think the logo and credits from that film are around Youtube somewhere. :) )
Whoa---"The Plague Dogs" was released on video? I didn't know that! I've been wanting to see it for years, ever since I rented "Watership Down", directed by the same guy, adapted from a novel by the same author. Is "Plague Dogs" as good as I've heard it is?
(whether it is or not, you're right, with a movie like that, this super-scary logo is a perfect fit for it. Kind of like how the 1979 "Paramount Home Video" logo was a perfect fit for "Friday the 13th")
Yes, it's an amazing film to see. :) Incredibly sad (much worse than Watership Down), but well worth watching if you can get hold of it. Apart from the Australian DVD release, most DVD releases are of the heavily cut version, and none feature this logo except for the original video release. It occasionally pops up on Ebay, so it might be worth looking there for it. :)
Well, from what I heard, the ending music may be a scare factor. But nonetheless, a good logo (though the one with the "light slashing the A", which came next, is better).
I have A Vhs copy of Rocky 3 from 82',and this logo was used at the opening.Sure is A lot better, than that suck MGM/UA communications logo from the mid 80's.The orchestration rules, soft piano blending into thunderous orchestration;gotta love it.
