  • nice one!

  • To add to that last comment, researchers don't always come up with the most creative and feasible applications, so don't go hard on the technology because of lousy implementation.

  • People don't realize that this is an INTERFACE. It's simply a means of interacting with a device. You want applications? Here:

    - Gaming

    - Spatial navigation (think Googlemaps or Street View)

    - Interaction with 3D menu interface (adds z-component to touchscreen's x/y)

    - 3D sketching and modeling (with multiple fingers)

    - Remote gesturing (think media control just by gesturing at your phone from far away)

  • the touch phones wasnt enogh and now they invented touchless phones , only god knows what will be invented after this...

  • @demonlordgalm1 phoneless- phones

  • @EzioAuditore haha lmaoo

  • Interesting. However, I dont see this as being very ergonomic... The mouse, albeit not entirely ergonomic on its own right, is still the best input device we have to date in the desktop environment. For something as small as this, touch would work better than motion tracking.

  • wowow thats impresive

  • fantastic,i love japan work!

  • future is near ))))

  • is there an android app for this ?

  • 3d painter does have sense

  • good !

but as Mustafa said: touching is more humanity.. But who knows !>? maybe we'll be forced to convert to this :P

  • nice try but it looks kinda stupid

  • so why would I want to use this instead of a touch screen? (iphone)

  • laptops. When you're using the keyboard you can just gesture at the screen to do things. Since this tech could detect multiple fingers you could have multi'touch' gestures like 2 finger scrolling, 'claw' finger rotation etc. Just like minority report basically :)

  • Comment removed

  • they never showed the file system interface .. wtf

  • awesome tech .....

  • Ti mutch..

  • great job, probably this will be used in many laptops/phones in the next year, but somehow it doesn't suit me :S, maybe im just used to touch thing

  • Вот это да! Если это не фейк, то за такой технологией будущее!

  • Nice idea for handicapped persons. They can use their tongue or nose to use your interface.

  • i saw it coming

  • the future :)

  • @blizzarox wow that was random

  • good job ! :-) .... but will not my hand feel pain if i keep my hand hanging in air like that ? :O

  • good Job Tokyo !

Tho' in a buss this would make a mess of things if it's crowded or in a train :P

  • -Camera being able to track and allow use of multiple fingers, rather than only one.

  • revolutionary innovation

    Good job Tokyo,

  • so Cool!!

  • God, cut your nails if you're gonna show a video like that o_O

  • cool

  • It would be fun to play like a 3d version of whack a mole with this.

  • This technology will be very useful when hologram phones and other devices are developed for the consumer market, which I could easily see being done in this decade. For a two dimensional screen though, the touch screens already in use are far more practical.

  • Will that gizmo help me get more babes? If so...I've have ten please.

  • if im wrong correct me but doesnt the ps3 have this already in the playstation eye for the eye pet and other things but all this its just motion tracking we had this for a while now. all they did was make it so it follows a finger instead of a face or a hand or a whole body i got a web cam about 5 months ago it has motion tracking with these effects. also its cool but find it pointless for apps just use a touch screen it will be more accuret probly.

  • this is bullshit. why would anyone build something like this when touching the screen is more logical to use

  • so your saying you'd rather be stuck with a touch screen for the rest of your life?

  • Well, it doesnt leave fingerprints on your handset!

  • I think this is cool tech but any application like this on a phone or other small-screened, portable platform would be so annoying. I'd look like an idiot if i stood over my phone tapping the air. I can see this being used for gestural computer interface in a workstation environment.

  • i realize how you would think you look like an idiot using this new technology, but think about how crazy people looked using the first blue tooth headsets.

  • cool technology but i don't see how any of the applications in this video are practical in any way. well.... except maybe if you're really anal about not getting finger prints on the screen. franky i don't see finger prints as such a big issue. a quick wipe fixes that right up if it bothers you that much.

  • the next wii

  • actually, that is the next XBox 360. Microsoft is working on what is called "Project Natal" that translates complete body gestures into game controls!! Movement recognition will depend on a similar high frame-rate camera(s).

  • こんな技術前からあるだろ。それよりか真似されるから動画を載せないでほしい。

  • Completely useless...

  • ces vraiment cool

  • Ce n'est pas un téléphone fait pour les myopes en tout les cas :D

  • but what happens if there's not enough light in the room youre in? a really good idea, no question about that, but (like all other first ideas) it still needs improvement :)

  • @Theonlymac001 u can use infrared camera for that =)

  • @x0Fx True that

  • This is really amazing!

  • Cool. But this is feature will probably consume a lot of battery power.

  • Good for people with a germ phobia. Also no fingerprints/scratches on the screen, yay!

  • Amazing. This reminds me of how Steven Spielberg imagined people would use computers in his movie Minority Report, with Tom Cruise being able to manipulate and move things with just using his hands! Not too far off now. I'd love to see an application like that before the end of the decade!

  • By integrating IR LEDs into the fingertips of gloves, this can already be done.

  • @chaotictails maybe, except you have to wear gloves.

  • Yes, but if I remember correctly Cruise was wearing gloves in the movie.

  • Hopefully they can allow it to detect a wider range of motions - holding my hand in one position for a long period of time would get annoying. Also, the motion they chose for clicking would be difficult to use, since there's a high possibility of the fingertip moving to the side while it is being flicked forward. The technology is great, though.

  • wouldnt your finger get tired?

    major finger workout...

  • Woah! This technology is perfect for me and my sweaty fingers!

  • This is very useful for person that can't touch the screen. Like a mecanician that need a computer to make the bill but he don't want to wash is hand everytime he use it.

  • Good idea but better be keyboard by projector :)

  • Minority Report japan tech ftw

  • The potential is limitless - just amazing what the interface will be like in a couple of years!

  • Awesome

  • I w jaki sposób ma być to wygodne?

  • I imagine the military will love this.

  • Useless, annoying, and tiring for the fingers

  • problem is people WANT tactile feedback which is why technology like this wont replace actual buttons

  • i want wireless glove for input interface

  • @godmode9

    also true for touchscreen phones

  • ALL WE NEED NOW IS HOLOGRAMS

  • Maybe this new Apple tablet will have that feature. That would be awesome!

  • Jkwon85... Are you that dumb?

  • Jkwon85... Are you retarded?

  • useless. after being so used to touch screens , keybords and mouses this would make it very unvomfortable to have you hand in the air. the dude even practices before typing anything

  • Just think about the magnitude of this technology. You see those sci fi movies (e.g. minority report), where they are just moving things on a screen with their fingers, with out even really touching the surface... same thing

Omfg.. cant wait for the future :D

  • lots of potential in this

  • yay, this will eliminate fingerprints on my touchscreen devices :D

  • This is a great idea and will find many uses such as bank teller machines, interac, public pay phones, vending machines, combination door locks, chemical and hospital laboratories just to name a few. Anywhere personal hygene, risk of infection and contamination is critical.

  • The example applications they show are totally useless, why would you need to look like a tool typing in the air on your phone when you can just use a touch screen? "DURR FINGER PRINTS!!!" Who the fuck cares, the dexterity you have pressing on a solid object will always be greater than air, thus being easier. It doesn't simplify anything.

I think the technology has much better applications elsewhere, like for changing television channels and volume from across the room with just your arm.

  • Okay. Try playing an FPS game on a touch screen monitor and see if you can rape people using a Mouse. Touch screen isnt always the best way...

  • but this has many practical uses. That doesnt mean it would be best suited to gaming.

  • You brainless virgin, stop thinking about video games 24/7. This technology wouldn't even fit that scenario well since it can only capture one motion input so it's impossible to be used for an FPS.

What I was talking about with a touch screen is relative to what most normal day to day people need i.e. texting, gps, phones, whatever... not to what children do for entertainment. A normal person doesn't play video games at 45 yrs but does use the gadgets in question, where touchscreen is simpler.

  • Way to assume. Cool story bro.

  • Actually, the average gamer is 35.

Still, this can be used in a variety of things.

And yeah, people must stop thinking about video games every moment.

  • eh, rather have a scroll like rollout screen.

  • how do u click?

  • прикольно, что-то новое после aplle )

  • so you ppl saying this is useless, do you not see the potential that this tool as. obv its just a prototype.. but imagine if instead of a touch screen monitor (which by the way sucks.. finger prints =_=) that we had a screen like this! it would be a down sized version of the 360 natal pretty much.

How epic would u feel if you could control things on your comp with out touching anything O_o

  • Good for changing tv channels. With direct tv my arm might need surgery by next week XP

  • Good for changing channels on a tv. With direct tv my arm could need surgery next week XP

  • it has its place

  • あと,せっかく両手指10本あるんだから全部認識出来たら無限大の用途があるね今後に期待します

  • Why is this even remotely a good idea?

  • みんな食い付いて来るね〜どれだけのアクセス数くるかな!?。指痛くならないからいいかもそれとテレビと携帯が繋げられたらより用途が広がるね

  • gaayy

  • would be good for hospitals and other places with contaminants.

  • Cool but useless, I'm not gonna hold my hand over every thing, too hard after awhile

  • I see a use for this already. I had to develop a database application for a garage. However, the employees had to clean their hands each time they wanted to use the keyboard. Eventually they got fed up doing it and stopped using the system altogether. Touch screen was out of the question due to price.

This would have been an ideal solution to my problem.

I'm going to try the project once again. Thanks guys!

  • lmfao sticking ur hand in the air like that would start to hurt :P try it

  • Wow, the type writer, keyboard, smaller more "advanced" keyboards, touch screen, now motion control? Sooner or later we will be able to use our minds, and then like or blood stream or fat or something will control it. WHERE ARE THE FUCKING FLYING CARS ALREADY?!?!

  • Its funny how people don't seem to realize that technology is used to make peoples lives easier..

  • It's also making people more lazier...

  • so pointless...like cmon how lazy is the human race getting that they cant touch the screen??????

  • totally defeats the purpose of the "touch" screen.

  • He needs to cut his fingernails and if its a girl needs a pedicure.

  • sorry but its kind of gay if u do it in a public place

  • It is cool, but wait til you use it

hard to control since we all are used to "Touching" the screen or keyboard

like win9haha says, its a good start, but not ready yet for a solid presentation

    Anyhow, thats my opinion

  • Thia is so cool..When will you guys have this on the market? It would be so cool for making movies and painting in 3d,explaining stuff..

  • :O I WANTT ONE :D

  • now you can eat and not dirty your device with your hands :D

  • @tohoshinkiforever oh yea sweet >=D

  • i think that this input is only good for games not for like sms or notes

  • it's a good start. but it would be more practical if the camera can track all 10 fingers when typing and all we have to do is type in air and it would match what we are typing with the keys on a keyboard for non-keyboard typing functionality.

  • wtf? who is honestly going to use such a thing?

  • Thats exactly what the president of DEC, Ken Olson, said about computers lol

"There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home"

And he was absolutely wrong, so who knows, this tech may be of some use in the future

  • good point... BUT do you honestly think someone is going to use this? Think about the iPhone and the multi-touch, multi-touch is the next big thing, not some in-air finger detecting thingy.

I can't see this being practical, imagine trying to use this in a car while it's moving... annoying as fuck!

  • @Syko8

It's not practical, but the technology can be used in ways that make it efficient and helpful.

    ex. Project Natal.

  • your right it could get really annoying, but you shouldnt be using your cellphone/Ipod in the car while driving anyway.

  • yeah, dont get me wrong guys, not trying to start an argument, just stating my thoughts on the development of this new technology. honestly, i think its extremely impractical, but who knows? maybe the application of it in the future will be extremely useful...

  • Why not invent something that makes a screen fingerprint proof

  • and why would i want to do this

  • @kieranthegeek imagine this technology with hologram technology.

  • Old technology. I think it was done with 2 cameras instead of 1 but... same thing really?

  • i can see a lot of potential in gaming too. i hope microsoft takes notice for the natal project ;)

  • This is a pretty weird interface, but I can see it being used on very large displays, kind of like the holographic/ transparent ones that are scene in sci-fi media. just stand in front and move objects by making the motions. But I have to agree with peacetake123, it'd be tiresome after a while, but that'd really only apply with a handheld device.

  • Is this what tax payers dollars are going towards in Tokyo? These funs and games?

This technology has been out for years and years now and is nothing special. It's very basic actually.

Also, this WOULD have been good if touch screens were never invented. But this is useless for a cell phone device and is illogical to use it for these purposes.

Just students and professors wasting time and tax dollars and basic toy Arduino projects that have been out for years.

  • utterly frustrating to watch.

  • you guys should put this technology on tv's ...it would be so much fun to control a tv without a remote :D// just sit in the couch and play with the fingers :)...

  • so your hand does the same movements as if it were a touch screen just you dont touch the screen??? na i guess it would be cool for games where you could grab stuff or have to pull your hand back or something like that

  • this is it!!! remember "Minority report"... this could revolutionize computing... so excited !!! love to be geek!!

  • Your arm would be tired being held up in mid air after a period of time.

  • Neat, but pointless.

  • how could u say this is pointless. dont use anything call technology then. cos this is how things get done or advance.

  • Wow best interface I've seen in my life... It may seem hard to use for people that don't understand technology. But this superior to any type of interface.

  • i can see this replacing clunky television remote controls, or integrated into car interfaces so that hand gestures control functions. With an upward gesture you could raise your garage door....

Never lose your remote again, stop bothering with batteries.

Come on people, the possibilities are endless.

  • i'd rather use a touch screen, cause this could be a little difficult

  • güzel bir tekneloji

  • IMHO there is no real benefit to using touch screens (at least right now).

But I have to agree that with some more work this could be a great tech especially for disabled people who can't use touchscreen or other normal input devices.

  • i like this tech, but we need to workout before using it for a long period of time

  • Nice brandnew teck.
