This commercial is from the mid-to-late 70s. I remember they re-made this commercial in the 80s, literally - there were all new actors, but the exact same soundtrack! The mother and the kids simply moved their lips to the original dialog - it was weird
@winmuch You're right about that. They used to have a naked man where the patient's body fat covered up his groin (just like Peter Griffin in Family Guy). However, in recent years they decided to make the game a little more decent by giving the patient boxers. LOL! It is more appropriate to to wear boxers than to have a fat naked man that children play with. With obesity becoming a growing problem, we can't just ignore the big guy as "The man's fat because he's a clown" anymore.
Folks, I say this commercial about every 2-3 months to people, It infected me and still won't let go..... Buttahfingers.. anytime anyone is clumsy when they say they don't remember it, it's like a shot to the gut!..how can anyone not remember this., you would be surprised! We are getting old....
I've been saying "Buttahfinga's" and "It takes a very steady hand" and "May I play?" for 35 years and now my 10 yr old daughter says them. I thought it would be fun to show her the "source material." Thanks YouTube.
If there was one commercial that was included on the golden phongraph record sent with the Voyager spacecraft, I hope that it was this one. As glango said, the cadences of the speech are bizarrely infectuous. I would like to imagine a distant civilization getting these words stuck in their heads. And cursing us for it, of course.
I love the pacing of this commercial, it just sort of oozes along. And everyone's so polite: the applause, mom asking permission... Haven't stopped using some of these phrases (with the same cadence!) since I was a child, namely "don't touch the sides" and especially "buttahfinguhhhs".

According to The Hub's "Family Game Night" program, the guy's name is Sam for "Operation" games.

This was a nerve racking game. They should re-release this and call it the Medi-Care game.

They played this commercial in Canada, too. I always thought the mother/woman had a rather British accent ("may I play?" and "ohperate?!?!")

Yes, this for some reason is one of the most quotable commercials of the 70's. "TAKE out his SPARE ribs for ONE hundred DOLLARS."

I'm still looking for the older Operation commercial with the funky electric guitar music.
