You gotta understand that Sony is a huge corperation. Not all of it's parts work towards the same goal. The division that owns the bluray would be perfectly happy to license out the tech to Microsoft or Nintendo (though also, Sony isn't the only company with the rights to bluray). In the end, it's all about the dollar, which is why so many systems currently use DVD, another format Sony invested heavily in.
