I saw Jack perform this at California Lutheran College (now University) in 1971. It's one of my all-time favorites. Sweet, sweet piece, with an ending (not this one, with Dylan's song) that is just a killer.
I followed Jack around the San Francisco Bay Area for the better part of 30 years! I NEVER EVER get tired of hearing this song or hearing Jack.
I once gave him some pictures that I took in New Orleans (I was raised in Louisiana) - the pictures had the old Jax (Jackson) Brewery and also 912 Toulouse Street.
To make a long story short, I was in the seats for this -University of Texas Ballroom, Austin, 2008. There was more to the story before Asheville: a shrimp boat and shelling green beans on a porch on Chesapeke Bay, "South Coast" in a lightning storm. Mesmerizing. Guy Clark requested he play this. Jack said, "Guy likes this song. I USED to like it..." I'll be seeing him again soon, I hope. Great, great, great. He doesn't like cameras, by the way -this looks pretty official, though.
I first heard this song in the 1970's. A friend played it for me. I haven't seen that friend for twenty years, but the ending gave me a chill then, and it gives me a chill now.
