  • Poor Esmeralda ..

  • to hell with the walt disney's phoebus character! Real Phoebus of Victor Hugo was a damn selfish, stubborn and unresponsive prick. I think all the children worldwide shall read the book notre dame de paris as soon as possible for not to forget an historic faggot. with the help of the Andersen tales, we may welcome a new suicidal nation! Dont kill yourself to live dudes...

  • Poor girl, she was forced to"confess" and sentenced to death. Poor poor girl:<

  • 26.02

  • Poor Esmaralda...

  • I always said Phoebus was a coward and a bastard!

  • Quelle voix!

  • trop triste :'(

  • 5 dislikes.. other Esmeraldas? )

  • La pauvre... T_T

  • awwww... :( poor emeralda.. this is mon favori :)

  • Phoebus . . *sniff*

The best...

  • Well I think in the french version is easy to say that "Esmeralda is so stupid! Phoebus never loved her!" because Esmeralda seems like a woman, not like a child o an teenager (that is what she was in the real story). I don't like this Esmeralda because of that, I really like how she sings BUT she's too old. "Flor de lis" "Fiordaliso" etc names, is the best in the french version, acting and singing. Look at the italian version, is too much better (Sorry about my english, i'm from Spain).

  • mooi lied!!!

  • Esmeralda's character is so weak. She's begging the dead man she loves to come rescue her. She pins all her hopes on this guy.

  • He isn't dead and yes she is weak, niave and shallow but this is suggested purely because of her age and lack of experience. She is, after all, suposed to be just 16 years old.

  • Ya, but she thinks he's dead: "if by chance you're not dead" and "tell them I didn't kill you."

I'm 18, and with my first boyfriend at 17, I wasn't pinning all my hopes on him :-/

  • Yes but you have look at her situation. She is being constantly prowled about by unwanted men. She has no proper home or infact family. Esmeralda is insecure and thus needy. She sees Phoebus as being the solution to everything, the 'sun', her hero... everything. She is so engrossed in her image of him she fails she realize what a jerk he is.

  • Everyone has some sort of unhappy situation. It's the weak characters that need to be saved from it, while the strong characters resolve their own issues (with support, but essentially by their own strength of character).

The very notion that she sees this guy as the solution to everything proves her weak character, and I think that was the author's intent. We see it strongly with this song, but also through Quasimodo's "you love him for the outside, without seeing what's within".

  • I wasn't saying she wasn't a weak character but to brand her as one entirely would be unfair. In the book she is perfectly capable of protecting herself as she wants to, being described as a 'tigeress' in one chapter. A lot of the time this is out of her power but she doesn't just fall down and let people walk all over her unless she wants them to (as in Phobeus' case).

  • Of course she isn't a rag doll. She stands up to Frollo in "Un matin tu dansais," but she's still desperate to be saved by Phobeus. This makes her emotionally weak in a very important way, which leads to her downfall. That is why I argue that she is a weak character.

  • In my first comment, I said that she was 'weak, niave and shallow'. So we both agree she is weak.

  • In one song she asks for Quasimodo to save her, then she sings for Phoebus to save her. I think it goes beyond being head over heels for one guy into the very unnecessarily weak category.

  • I think if anyone is stuck in a prison and waiting for execution they'd be calling on just about anyone to save them!

  • Good point!

  • Well in the book, she does sense that perhaps he might be unfaithful to her - but the notion is so painful to her, she pushes out of her mind.

  • her name is helene segara

  • Just perfect!

  • She is really beautiful and i love her voice. Does anyone know her name?

  • Her name is Helene Segara. :]

  • @MsLizable Thanks!

    J aime beaucoup.

  • Lastly, she was a dreamer, living in her own world of fantasies and I suspect she had nobody human to open up to before she met Phoebus. This all makes her a victim of circumstances that she could not have expected and knew not how to cope with.

  • I have to disagree with those who say that Esmeralda was shallow and stupid. I believe you either didn't read the original or overlooked some important details. Firstly, she was very young and it was her first love and, as some of you know, it's is often platonic, unrequited and so its object is loved based on some imaginary qualities. Secondly, she never had anybody teach her what love is, how dangerous can some kind of men be and she, probably, never saw closely a successful relationship.

  • She was only 15 years, yeah, and nobody to take care of her !

  • @v11alley all of that doesn't mean Esmeralda wasn't shallow or naive. (Stupid is sort of the wrong word. If someone's saying stupid, they probably mean naive.)

  • @v11alley

I believe, it's only natural for a young girl who had no parents to love to lavish her affection on the first man who seems to deserve it (and the first time she met him, he did seem a bid heroic, having rescued her from Quasimodo). And then...You know, some psychologists say that it is only natural for a child (and, at her 16, she's almost a child) to treat the person who has once done you some good as a good one

  • @v11alley

well in "Esmeralda, Tu sais" Clopin TRIED to tell her. i dont know if she was listening.

NAUGHTY ESMERALDA!!!!! LISTEN TO YOUR ADOPTED OLDER BROTHER!!!! XD

  • @v11alley I was a teenager and when a guy didn't stood up for me when I was being teased or harassed, I knew right there and then he didn't give a shit about me so if Esme just analyzed her situation she would see that by the time she is about to be hung by the next, Phoebus doesn't give a shit about her. He didn't even come to see her at the bell towers for pete's sake.

  • @v11alley But she's a gypsy girl. She's been from place to place. Wouldn't she have seen what men like Pheobus do to her people before? Also, Clopin DID try to warn her about men before, but clearly she wasn't listening as she was too busy admiring Pheobus.

  • @v11alley in the context all the characters were shallow even Quasimodo. Do they even know each other? None of them know anything about each other how can they be in love? Maybe Esmeralda wasn't shallow and stupid but she was definitely naive for thinking that Phoebus loved her, she should know that he's royalty and she's a gypsy, why would he want her? In Esmeralda tu sais, Clopin even warns her of all the crazy men, therefore she is naive

  • @ntorneiro well, she was a teenager and Phoebus did "save" her once in the dark street (from Quasimodo)..so he has that orel of saviour and protector for her..very natural for her to fall in love with him in THIS context:P

  • @v11alley so the words "ignorant," "misguided" and "delusional" would be better? ;)

  • @v11alley Thank you! I was really wanting to say something about that earlier! And in terms of her treatment of Quasimodo, many forget that she was the only one who ever treated him kindly. He certainly doesn't need any persuading to help her. She saved Quasi & Grignoire, and Pheobus really played himself up to her. I believe the scene of him and Esmeralda in Fleur de Lis' house really gives a good idea of how she felt towards him.

  • @Amy3422 Co-signing this! Yes, she in love with nauseating, sleazy, "handsome" young man, but he played himself up to her, he saved her when she was kidnapped. She is flawed, but she helped Quasimodo and Gringoire! She is heartbreaking.

  • I read Hugo, and I'm sorry, but in the book, she REALLY seems to be SO stupid.

  • @FlavieBrizard well i also did, but imagine a girl who never be truely loved and he appears from nowhere, one morning. she was young, can't you remember your first love?

  • @v11alley That explains why she's shallow, it's not an argument against her being so.

  • she s really fool.. but helene segara is really great singer..

  • I read the novel, and it was great. I didnt like esmeralda, i find her too foolish, to shallow, and says loves phoebus but i think she only loves his looks

  • yes she s really fool..

  • This song is (after Belle and tu vas me detruire), my favourite from the musical. The composition is brilliant, the performance is outstanding and it is a direct hit to the heart. Phoebus, you're an idiot; Esmeralda, I love you!

  • the book is very strong. i read being a child and cried

  • Oh Esmeralda, you foolish child, Phoebus never loved you

  • one of most touching comments i have ever read...

  • @YuiHarunaShinozaki

yes indeed !!!!! stupid !!! but phoebus is also stupid

  • @YuiHarunaShinozaki why didn't he? Sorry if I sound ignorant. I really want to read the book but I don't have time because of school. The thing is I know thousands of Esmereldas, in the sense they love a man and they don't love them back. IT IS VERY SAD!!!

  • @YuiHarunaShinozaki It is tragic that many people love some sort of Phoebus.

  • @unswgoldenleo It is even sadder when such Phoebus don't reform their ways.

  • @EmilyGreene1984 Such Phoebus think love is a sort of game and it is common to look for fresh girls, though they can't marry those poor girls

  • poor Esmeralda

  • Best. Song. Ever.

    In a bajillion years.

    Duh (:

  • cette chanteuse est fabuleuse

  • I love this musical and this song is song with such emotion it almost makes me cry ! :')

  • yes, and the musical comedie is going to return in France in 2010!

Notre dame de Paris will be in concert in September, 2010 during 1 month!

  • Quand serat-il in New York?

  • where?!

  • i really like this song.

    I feel bad for her.

  • Poor thing. She still believes that her damned Phoebus will come take her to a peaceful home in the country or something. I feel so sorry about her, she's damned naive.

  • rather damned than naive

  • That's a bit harsh - look at the viper Fleur de Lys.

  • They all are the victims of their desire and love:

Esmeralda's naivety is only that she believes in true love, she's damned to suffer and find it too late.

Fleur de Lys at first is also naive, believes in true, "pure love", later after having her expectations destroyed, she becomes the viper you talk about. Even if she wishes Esmeralda death, it's the deed of a coward, Phoebus. He's also got an excuse: passion, desire for Esmeralda, but he's worse than Frollo, using and sending her to death.

  • I disagree - I'd say Frollo and Phoebus are about the same. True, Fleur de Lys should have told Pheobus that Esmeralda was alive, but he obviously saw her being led for her last rites at Notre-Dame-de-Paris and still turned away. However, Frollo lusted after Esmeralda and went as far as to commit murder by trying to kill Phoebus. Esmeralda's fault was that she was shallow - she loved Phoebus because he saved her from Frollo and Quasimodo kidnapping her and she saw him as her shining knight.

  • Which in of itself is not a bad thing, but she also loved him because of his good looks and the fact he was a royal guard of the King. (A man of the law) Again, not in of itself a bad thing - but she should have asked him who Fleur de Lys was and should have suspected he only thought of her as a fling when he persuaded her to have sex before she was initially ready at the whore house. She had been waiting for him to propose marriage and she wanted a pure true love (like Fleur), but ..

  • when that put off Phoebus, she agreed to have sex with him (at his urging) - thinking he would later propose if she did it.

  • And interestingly enough, there are young girls today that still offer their body to their 'first loves' in hopes it'll make the boy love them...so really Esmeralda was just the same, a naive girl who was in severe need of smack from a mother or a good female friend to get her head straight.

  • "Tell them I haven't killed you..." what a beautiful thing to say.

  • Yep, like it will actually happen.

  • So beautiful and emotional

  • Oh... I'm allways crying when i listen that song. In our school performance "Notre - Dame de Paris" I played Esmeralda and I crying when i had to sing that song. I didn't know, what happened to me... When i had to sing this song's that words:

    Phoebus

    Promets-moi que tu garderas

    Le souvenir d'Esmeralda

I was crying and i was heard just storm of applause in that song's end... Now, i know, what Esmeralda feel, when she sing this remarkably song...

  • OH MY GOSH! You are sooo lucky that your school actually allows and does not ruin wonderful musicals like this!

If it was set up in my school, the students would be singing flat and would not show emotion. So I had to bring the musical to my house!

And I agree with you, I can feel her emotions. I feel like I am her everytime I listen to this song, I also feel trapped inside a cell, beging for some shining knight to rescue me.

  • Exactly... But, I know, i will never sing this sont that, how it sang Helene Segara. She is so passionately...

  • Nothings impossible. If you never tried it and you want the way you sing this song to be good, you listen to the song, and pretend that you are sitting inside a cell awaiting a shining knight to rescue you from your next day's death.

And then, you realize that it is as if it is all real.

  • she has the most beautiful voice. I really think so. And she is a really good person too.

  • Sorry about the comment about Esmerelda. My friend "borrowed" my account and wrote it. I disagree. Fleur, Es, Quasimodo and Gringoire are my favorites.

  • Did she die thinking Phoebus was her prince? I mean she still loved him until she died?

  • but sincere and pure girl=))that's not that bad i guess=) and by the way she didn't know the truth about him yet

  • BAH! Don't blame her, it's not like she knows! However up there *points to heaven* I hope she realized it. She was such a stupid girl XD

  • very beautiful song and perfoming

  • Its spelled Andalucia :3.

  • ... this song rly speaks 2 me.... it hits home.

  • hmmm, cuz you`re accused of killing a guy, who was in fact stabbed by a creepy preacher???:)

  • its is also about lost love. phoebus betrayed her, of course she doesnt know that, but she longs to see him so he will save her but he never comes.

  • thank you luvsagoodvillain

and nataliiiaf: lol a few times jk jk

  • She has an angelic voice

  • RRRRR! Elle attend encore Phoebus! Ça me choque trop!

  • she doesn't even deserve to love him though. i love her and everything, but she's too ignorant to his feelings.

  • I love Hélène! ^^

    She's my favourite singer!!! <3

She is sooo beautiful, and her voice is wonderfu!!! ^^

    this song is just perfect!!!

  • Helene Segara's wonderful

  • it's ok if u disagree with me .... because there are songs in notre dame de paris (english) which are much worst

  • both are great all the same~ ^^

  • See, Phoebus was the only character of that novel who deserved some punishment (even if i admit that there were parts I felt sorry for him). The girl loved him, the young innocent girl gave her heart and soul out to him so readily and he didn't even care. But then there are plenty examples of that situation in the real life as well... so it's not that unusual, sadly :(

  • 2 innocent girls including Fleur, except she eventually lost her innocence(thanks to Phoebus being a player)

  • Wonderful! Magnifique ! Sehr schön !

  • a-m-a-z-i-n-g

  • Was this musical ever translated into Norwegian? I know it was in Swedish.

  • Do you have a copy of the swedish version?? Or even a link to know more of it?? I'd LOVE to hear it in Swedish (a beautiful language)

  • Their is no Swedish version to it. It was TRANSLATED into Swedish. So their is just a translted version.

  • Well, do you know where I can get a copy of the swedish translation?

And to answer your question, I'm almost positive that it never was translated into Norwegian. Just Italian, Russian, Spanish, English, German, Swedish, Catalan, Armenian, Polish, and I think some of the Asian languages.

  • Not really shure where. I hope somebody from Sweden can download it.

  • polish too??

  • Yep, look up Notre Dame de Paris polish. Le temps des Cathedrales should come up in polish.

  • I just try to understand if her voice have to be so soft or she simply cant sing stronger?

  • Yes me too xd

  • she portrays sadness so well compared to Lola.

  • I

    MUST

    LEARN

    EVERY

    WORD

    TO

    THIS

    SONG

  • If you want to learn the lyrics then do not rely on the Enligsh subtitles. I hear they can be very wrong.
