Actually it was the 3rd driver who gave Hakkinen advantage in that situation. He moved left and allowed Hak to get inside the curve. Not much of a driving skill was involved there. But that's the point of Hakkinen "greatness". He was only "great" while he had a superior car. Same thing with Raikkonen.
Yes they both had slicks, BUT Schumacher had a wet set-up for his car with more downforce among other settings. On the other hand Hakkinen had a dry set up. That is why he had lost the lead because of a spin earlier and that is why he made this overtake possible.
Both great drivers but posting and commenting without the full knowledge of the facts around the race is equal or worst than ignorance.

@vplehweIT Funny thing is, he didn't :P. Hakkinen was doing 310 kph + at the time of the overtaking... Yes that's really how fast that is. No margin for error =)!
@vplehweIT I'm really sure :P. I was watching this race live. You may think he sped it up because Villeneuve was going "slow (around 180kph)" when Michael and Mika overtook him. They scared the crap out of him :P.
It s very hard to explain ,i followed F1 races on radio live comment , then tv , then internet since 1982. I am a big fan of schummi , but Hakkinen is one the virtuose ,maestro of F1.Enough said.
At the time, it was two titans of the highest level of motorsport in the world, Formula 1, both double world champions, in two of the fastest cars of the two top teams fighting for the lead of a race at one of the most dramatic tracks in the world, a crucial lead as each successive race could influence the end of a hard fought season. Overtaking in formula 1 was hard enough, but to overtake the ruthless and unforgiving Schumacher in such an opportunistic fashion at 200 mph was truly special.

THE BEST OVERTAKING EVER!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Mika for destroying Schumi.....
I was a big fan of Senna, Hakkinen and now Hamilton....I hate Schumi, that asshole.....and his instrumented driving, with no sense of the driver. He had always a good team but as a driver he is s_h_i_t !!!
MS may have won the championship but to me it was Mika's year to prove he was still the best, it was like still his season. I was felt felt bad for him that he always had some sort of engine failure during important races, or he might have won another five races? in like three seasons.
who ever was driving the middle car in that overtake must have had the shock of his life as he got taken on either side by 2 world champions absolutly amazing move
Mika is suck a funny guy,:"i'm sure u loved it right (MS)". LOL. i mean i'm a MS fan but Mika was an amazing challenge for Michael. Schumi said that Mika was the only driver who scares him.
Per mè questo sorpasso è uno dei migliori se non il migliore di questi ultimi anni, io tifo per Michael, mà in questa gara Mika è stato fenomenale, grandissimo pilota l'unico in grado di poter impensierire seriamente Schumi a quei tempi
I remember watching it on TV........Mika was leading the race but slipped on the track to let Schumacher passed him.
Mika recovered & went on the race behind Schumacher, he managed to catch Schumacher but was not close enough to overtake him a few laps earlier until this very lap where he came up with this brilliant move to overtake Schumacher.
I remember I jumped from my chair with hands clapping lol
This is pure genius from Mika & the best F1 overtaking maneuver I've seen so far ^_^

as far as i know, the best maneuver in racing ever. maybe mika wasn't the best when it comes down to statistics, but his character and his style of driving, as well as the close battle with schumacher, made the whole formula 1 more exciting than it's has ever been.
Straight after the race when interviewed Schumi says ''It was a brilliant move!''. Sportsmanlike as ever. Especially when Hakkinen had 'postponed' Scumacher's championships for two years with a slightly slower car. Remember 1999: it took three men, Schumacher, Irvine and Salo NOT to beat Hakkinen. - - 2010 - - Beat 'em Schumi, Vettel will be your 'hakkinen' this year, but you've got a fair chance. Learn from Mika if nothing else works. Sisu you must concentrate on.
Michael is my fauvorite driver, but it's hard to say "the best driver ever" 'cause drivers like Mansell, Prost, Piquet (not jr. xD) and Senna were way better.
Hakkinen is a very good driver...with a nice McLaren under his ass!!
I think that Ricardo Zonta was scared, because Mika Hakkinen was coming from the right and Michael Schumacher from the left.He really did'nt know what to do so he stayed in the middle.
Mercedes should have got both of these two for 2010, remember in 2001 at spain where these two were 1 - 2 seconds a lap faster than anybody else including their team mates in the same car!
Schmacher made a very rare mistake.. And he knows it. At 0:41 he should have stayed to the right, thus covering the corner and causing Mika to go the long way around the back marker. Problem for Schuey was the back marker left little room for him on the inside but as the tracked opened up @ 0:43 Mika found he had more room AND a very very helpful slipstream. Also. Why do good Finnish racing drivers retire Too Early from the sport. Mika. Kimi (Please don't tell me he is not retiring..he has) Why?

damn i used to love watching F1 races back in those times with Mikka and Michael...nowadays F1 just got awful to watch the drivers are all dorks with no charisma at all F1 got ruined
here sure mika did great thing, but Schumi always showed to be better than him...
Nor Demon Hill or Villeneuve never beated him seriously....think to the car they race and the age...
the only one that could seriously fight with michael was Ayrton senna, but he was already a great experienced driver when the young schumacher comes...and I bet schumi would won even against him!!!!!!!!
thanks anyway for commenting, greetings from mrtheuploader
Schumacher retired because he couldn't beat Alonso? Alonso couldn't beat Lewis Hamilton in 2007, and yet at the time, he was the current double world champion!
If Schumacher had stayed at Ferrari in 2007, he would've walked away with the title.
Schumacher was only interested in winning. When he stopped winning, he stopped playing.
Anyway, it's good for all that Schumacher quit. In today's sport he would get banned for life for the tricks he did to Hill and Villeneuve. See what they're getting through now with Alonso's 1 win in Singapore. Schumacher could get away with it for 1 championship and almost another. That showed that there is no sportsman in Schumacher. He could've been a real champion, but he chose the way of a loser.

if you would have followed, you would see that overtaking is extremely difficult if the racer in front of the overtaking one has an equivalent car.
Hakkinen and Schumacher were competing for the title in that season so they were pretty much on the same level.
with slower racers, it's much easier though.

But instead he left enough room to the right for Hakkinen also. These really were the good old days...Hakkinen vs Schumacher!

Mika was allways faster driver than Michael.
However, Schumi was better what comes doing changes with car.
Those were the days...
And what´s best, these guys were predators on the track, but friends after race. Respect!

Spa is the greatest track ever made, it's merged as a part of the cars. Spa is not a track it's Formua 1 at it's best.
Spartan117FS 2 years ago
no, i think the best circuits are La sarthe and nurburgring, but spa is one of my favorite

Schumacher looks so dumb! Mika showed this Schumacher where the hammer is! So did Hill, Senna, Villeneuve . . .
RP2009FW 2 years ago
wait wait wait!!!!!
here sure mika did great thing, but Schumi always showed to be better than him...

What about Fernando Alonso? I think Schumi retired because he couldn't beat Alonso.
jounihat 2 years ago
Schumacher retired because he couldn't beat Alonso? Alonso couldn't beat Lewis Hamilton in 2007, and yet at the time, he was the current double world champion!
If Schumacher had stayed at Ferrari in 2007, he would've walked away with the title.
RoLLWithITOasis1 2 years ago 4
yeah wise worlds RoLLWithITOasis1 I do agree with You!
the last years of schumi have been influenced by new fuckin' rules from fia, car problems, car accidents and much more...
anyway schumi showed always to the world to be the best ever...

Everyone must know when to quit. I personally think, his retirement was a wise decision.
I`m a big fan of Raikonnen btw...

Yeah I do agree Iceman is a great driver, probably understimated by Ferrari!bye!
