  • This was my first anime 20 years ago. Still my favorite and now my own kids love it as well.

  • Gunbuster's episode 6 is the greatest episode of anything I have ever seen.

  • I finished this series yesterday, AMAZING.

  • just started to watch this because i wanted to watch more mecha animes. watched the opening and thought "damn, the gainax-bounce? thought that was "invented" later" and then the gainax logo appeared^^ lold so hard

funny to identify an animes makers by such a style element xD

  • I know it sounds stupid but, I almost named my daughter the main characters name. I was out voted. She knows this and had seen the movie. I've had it on VHS and DVD. she's now going on 16. I had this before she was even born.

  • 音ちっちゃwwww

  • is there a uncut editors edition out there anywhere

  • The ancestors of Simon and Kamina.

  • One of the best anime ever made, producers should focus more on history and less in fanservice....

  • This show is a genuine example of a mecha show that doesn't need constant action to be interesting. The only thing I didn't like was how the characters seemed a little rushed. Like * spoiler* Smith. If you want another show along the same vein, take Gundam 0080.

  • @samareaye It's supposed to deliver the shock of losing a recent friend in combat. I didn't understand it till many many years later.

  • I JUST started watching this and I love it. Gotta love the older animes!

  • ahhh Mikimoto Sensei....

  • I really liked it (especially the ending it is thus far the only time I cried at the end of a anime) and it boggles my mind why I didn't pick this up earlier!

  • mdr on dirait la bande son de l'aventurier (googlepowa) serieu c'est du plagia a la meme epoque en plus! XD

  • it's insane that people could see gunbuster episode 5, with possibly the best animated battle scene ever, and say it's boring. those same people who willingly watch shows about little girls doing nothing.

  • @misterlaufeyson Sadly, a lot of those people are teenagers, like me, and I get lumped into that demographic of anime fans. Is it wrong for somebody who isn't yet an adult to like quality anime...?

  • @ApolloKun777 hahaha.....NO. IT IS NOT. IT IS A BLESSING XD...my gosh Gunbuster is a MUST to see. I also see it 10 years ago XD..not when aired an this WONDERFUL character design from mikimoto sensei was one of the reasons I started looking for new styles of anime drawing not only the ones I founded on tv I realized that there are a lot of styles of drawing and I got deep into anime and manga. now I am in my twenties Without time to see a lot of anime (T__T)but NEEAH I ALWAYS GET SOME TIME XD...

  • I didnt like this anime I loved it

  • They just don't know their roots man. We have to educate them in the ays of epic win anime. personally I just love the ragged and half finiched feeling all the way through gunbuster. All the clutter of construction and personell cleaning the canon lenses. aaaah simpler times!

  • @HOFFTW Agreed! I mean, the style's different than the usual stuff these days, but just LOOK at how it's done! Instead of just one color for shading, they've got two or more, and this was all done BY HAND! With PAINT! Someone ought to guy the rights to show this in theatres outside of Japan or something. That'd teach new fans to respect the veterans. :)

  • my favorite anime

  • That epic tremelo defines the song for me

  • 0:32 wtf? Rocky training montage?

  • Amazon has the series for only $26

  • I've just started watching this for the second time, I'm really enjoying it and I got this awesome figurine of Noriko Takaya, I don't even normally buy figurines but it was cheap and well sculpted and since I can't actually buy the series on DVD for a price that isn't a ludicrous ripoff (seriously, I buy anime every month but $70 for 180 minutes? Though in fairness I hear the set was a high quality release except for one music edit), figurine it is.

  • That show is just perfect in any way. Doesn't get any better.

  • epispde 2 is my favorite

  • definitely for sure, Aim for the top 1 and 2 are some of the mos epic anime ever created, all thanks to GAINAX

  • Even if the story of this show bores you (what's wrong with you?), you have to give the show some props for the Gainax bounce at least.

  • Amazing series.

  • I don't suppose anyone can help me find a version of this song that's sung in English?

  • Jogging is the key to killing space monsters.

  • If you mean hand drawn anime they're using computers more because its cheaper.

  • I would also think because it may be easier.

  • yeh it is

  • What happened to anime? Now's it's all computers and crap like Naruto.

What happened to the awesome space opera/mech stuff like Yamato/Star Blazers, Harlock, Macross, Gunbuster, Megazone 23 etc.?

Just look at that gorgeous attention to detail in this animation. You don't see that anymore really. Will this be a lost art?

  • being the creator of our second to the last lowest being on earth

  • huh?

  • not 4 a long time

  • Drawing on a computer is still an art form, it is done using drawing tablets instead of pens and pencils. Do not disregard something just because its different. Anyway it significantly increases the turn around on these programs and allows for the reuse of materials more easily.

  • @pspman2000

    Well said. Interesting thoughts.

Personally, I still prefer hand-drawn cel-animation. I think that a wonderful hybrid of both CG and animation was Macross Plus.

  • OMG... this brings back memories of my childhood, where my uncle would let me stay up late with him and watch anime. when I was a little girl, Noriko was my idol haha..! The original Gunbuster will always have a place in my heart.

  • Cool

  • the true gunbuster

  • I prefer gunbuster aswell, I think it sums up how anime has canged now its more for people with short attention spans

  • It's obvious that you don't watch anything that doesn't air on Adult Swim.

  • I agree that to most people the original Gunbuster is a bit boring compared to Diebuster- It takes a certain type of person to appreciate older anime. For someone I know to be too impatient to watch something like this, I usually just recommend Diebuster to them, and tell them they can watch the original if they're interested enough to know the plot tie-ins.

  • I watched Gunbuster a few weeks ago and enjoyed it much more than Diebuster. I thought Diebuster was paced really awkwardly. However, I really enjoyed the end to Diebuster, it was well worth the watch just for the ending.

  • It's kind of sad to me to hear people call Gunbuster "boring," though- to me it's one of the most intensely compelling anime series I've ever seen.

  • especially since it explained the story in 6 episodes. Sure Star Wars had 6 episodes, but by the time you finish all 6 movies you could've watched the gunbuster series 5 more times.

  • @arnyjk : well people just don't see the master work of hideaki anno

  • @arnyjk Can't really blame them, though. Anything below the mid-90s year range is considered boring to anyone who isn't a diehard anime fan. Try talking to someone about Gainax's first movie and they'll scratch their heads.

  • @Violenteers I'm not a die-hard otaku, and yet i still loved this series.

  • @arnyjk Couldn't agree more.

  • @arnyjk modern anime fans are a completely different audience, each generation has a style they can relate to, I have learned there is no converting most of these people to classic anime. Just as I will never get into the newer stuff, that quite frankly I think sucks and can not relate to the style at all.

For me, nothing can beat the hand drawn anime of the 70s 80s and 90s. The music, the manner of speaking, the overall style, that era will never come back!

  • @Surixurient yeah some older anime's kick the newer ones butt

  • @Surixurient I actually enjoy both old and new anime. It would be far too restricting to limit myself to one era. If I only watched the old stuff then new favorites like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, and Arakawa Under the Bridge. If I watched only new stuff then I'd miss out on favorites like Nausicaa, Grave of the Fireflies, Ghost in the Shell, Gunbuster, and an interesting anime adaption of the Wizard of Oz book series. Keep an open mind is my point.

  • @jonnda Yeah, i mean, being a fan of anything, be it music film games or anime, constitutes you appreciating works from every era. :3

  • @arnyjk It's easy. They have no taste. Personally I feel bad for all the new anime fans who say "EW! IT'S TOO OLD IT SUCKS!!11" They're so narrow-minded. It's pitiful really.

  • @TheAnimeOverviewer I totally feel you. Before I got really deep into anime fandom, I made a conscious effort to go back and watch all of the classics. Now, whenever I talk about how amazing "Gunbuster" is, or how nothing could be as bad as "Harmageddon", or how "Domain of Murder" is one of the most unappreciated gems of all time, none of the kids I hang out with know wtf I'm talking about. Ahhh I wish I were in my 30's...

  • i <3 nonoriri. (^.^)

  • GUNBUSTER RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • You best be trolling, you tasteless kid.

  • Actually, you're sentence states "This thing is kind of boring...if not extremely boring..." the part "This thing is" states that you in fact do not view it as an opinion, but as fact. so when you say that it was an "unbiased opinion" you were obviously lieing.

  • yes smart is right "it looks kind of perverted too", what kind of unbiased opinion is that? It's

also evident that you have no reason to back up your "opinion" whatsoever. This leads me to the conclusion that you haven't even watched one episode of the show,Correct?

  • haha I'm not trying to start a debate with a person, I'm trying to correct someone who doesn't know an opinion from a fact. You'll get a lot more respect for your opinion if you do some research on the subject, hell you could of at least started with "I think",as for the "logical turn-out" event...i guess the "be reasonable" you've beseeched for, doesn't apply to you.

  • Opinion: What I think

Fact: What is stated by formal positions.

    ---

Besides, anyone could just scoff off my...month old statement and continue with his/her life. Isn't it easier to just click on thumbs down? A million did that already.

Also, these things don't need researching! I said that it 'looks --' and that depends on the person's personal perceptive, not on facts or opinions.

Anyway, I want to end this discussion now. So, hopefully, 'I am sorry' will suffice.

  • Best anime ever!!

  • Gainax Bounce, ATTACK! ^^I just love this show too much. Mecha and girls make a delicious combination. Powerful drama and excellent animation. And neat OP, of course. ^^

  • GUNBUSTER!!!!!!!!!!1 YAy.

  • i love noriko
