It's very subjective Re: which sounds better-- American or British English. Also, each country has gorgeous accents and hideous ones; there's no single American accent or British accent. I'm American and I have a preference for the American sound-- it sounds mild and pleasant to me-- but I respect that some prefer the British. I live part time in Eastern Europe, and my Czech colleagues generally say they prefer American English, as they find it easier to understand.
Language is a means to an end, that`s all. English is actually very good at achieving that end - evidently. Ergo I find arguments as to which form of English is superior rather superfluous ! Both my English and American English are equally efficient, when spoken well.
@hoilaahahaa Dare I say it ? British English would, to my mind, sound better. But I`m English, so perhaps I`m just biased. Let me put it another way, I`d imagine most people in the world wishing to speak English are learning the language by listening to American accents. If you learned it with an English accent, you`d possess a rarer gift. I once came across a Spanish Lady who spoke perfectly good English with an American accent. Still, it did not sound right.
@valarmanwe hmm maybe that's bad news to me.. I have been taught British English at school, but I have mostly felt that English is just too difficult to learn and recently when I have finally even learned something I have heard far more American accent than British. So now my "accent" is a terrible mix of American and British accent (I guess more like American), and somehow it seems to be so hard for me to even try to learn to speak English with certain accent, whit British accent even harder.
@valarmanwe and thaks for your surprising last sentence; unless you're kidding me :) Anyway I'm afraid you have seen too little my writing to know the truth :)
@hoilaahahaa I was entirely sincere re. my last sentence. I have been told that Finnis ( ? ) is a very difficult language for the English speaking world to master. And, I surmise, the same would be true of a Finn ( ? ) learning English. So you do very well to write as you do.
I can understand why so many non -English speakers learn our language with an American accent. American accents are far more common - in the media and on film for example - than the English accent.
@hoilaahahaa ..Continued : Put it this way,if you came over to England with an American accent, many people would be rather curious to hear it. People here are generally fascinated to hear American accents- particularly people of your age.
On the other hand, if you went to The States, they would be pleased to hear your "English" accent. Trust me - I know. I`ve been to the USA. English accents , generally, go down very well there.
@valarmanwe yes, Americans like the brit accent and the aussie accent as well. Thats why all the "info-mercials" on American TV have brits or aussies doing the sales pitch. Americans have this unconcious belief that any product hawked in a brit accent has more credibility
@valarmanwe I agree, I can remember a group of Americans on a tram in Sheffield, all the Brits were quiet just listening to what the Americans were saying, and I believe it works both ways
@Sprousefan813 You idiot hows it way better than Britsh is that because you don't understand British. They just copy the English language change a few words and call it American English. The day a fucking yank tells me he speaks American i would have to slap him. But anyway i surpose the copy everything not just language i mean how they can even say they are American is crazy technically they are all European.
@ThefirstGluhbirne You might want to do some History lessons. Maybe you can tell me, why is it that America hasn't got its own language, yet places as small as Wales have got their own. I'm saying i don't like Americans.... i have American friends but i find it pretty fucking crazy when someone says American English is better than British and Americans mastered the language even my friends who are American think it's stupid.
@gda321 well since america was first colonized by brits our own language is "English" although the accents can be quite different in various parts of the country depending on what type of immigrants flooded into that location many years ago. For example some parts had a high german population, some parts Irish (like Boston, massachusetts), new york........Italians, etc.
@gda321 i have news for you.....America is not "all European decent"......we have many blacks decended from African slaves, people of middle eastern decent, at least 30 million from mexico (legal or otherwise). Also you made the statement "how can we even call ourselves American".....Thats like saying How can Canadians call themselves Canadians........
English is primarily a written language. One should learn to speak English as a by-product of learning to read it. Learn Spaking & reading together.
Being able to read & write English well is more important than being able to speak it with a particular accent. If you read well & understand the sounds represented by certain letter groups, your English speech will improve quickly.

American English 101.
Spell most words incorrectly. Leave off the ends of words. eg. thorough becomes thorou & through becomes thru. Substitute Z for S in 90% of words. eg. specialise becomes specialize.
I like American English. I mean, maybe it's not 100% correct by the Oxford's English rule, but it sounds good and makes people want to hear it more. Like for me, I'm an asian, and trying to master American although it is really difficult since I am stuck with my current accent which sounds pretty odd even to me!!

I disgust British accent in great intensity, it's way to gay to be listened, or spoken world wide, thank you lord, for America's way of English and the understandability it brings.
dongchulgold, that`s probably because you hear more "English" spoken by Americans. Believe me, to learn English from an educated Englishman / woman sounds much better. I`ve been around the world and i`ve heard non English speakers speak English with a US accent. It doesn`t sound good. There`s nothing wrong with sounding American. As long as you are from the US. Otherwise, it sounds awful !
Addendum : It is still impressive how many foreigners do learn English.
The American accent doesn't sound awful...just different. Your preference for one accent over another is irrelevant. More people speak English with an American accent than an English accent. That's just due to the sheer numbers of Americans in existence.

@LifesClock There's no such thing as "the Oxford English rule"
The british make all sorts of grammar mistakes themselves, so it's the kettle calling the pot black.
There's no such thing as Right English. There's American English and British English and some other brands. Period.
Those ignorant people who thing British English is right are in the wrong themselves
