  • The lobby in the Grid map must be modeled after the lobby in the shootout scene in the Matrix. The columns, the colour on the tiles, the location of the elevator, it all fits.

  • @HashRash87 It is. There are outdated text files in the final version of PD and the map is even called Matrix in those.

    Do people not understand that A) technology moves on with time, and that B) err, it's just a game...lol.

    If people want a shooting simulation, surely the firing range would be more adequate.

    Remember when games started in the arcade? When life simulation was not even remotely on the agenda? What the fuck happened?

    I wouldn't be surprised if Lawnmower man becomes a reality one day.

  • So was this multiplayer map originally intended to be a mission? I've know about Grid for a while as I loved this game when I was a kid and loved using gameshark to play around. This game is one of the best ever, man I wish I could be young again with my friends.

    You would need to put the patched rom with this level onto a Flashcart, and those can fetch about 250 dollars on eBay

  • Lol, you can shoot at the cameras and destroy them with an explosions, but the guards won't give a shit about it. A funny fact. They are deaf, and almost blind because their FOV is very limited. Nice job about the AI, Rare. lol.

    This is a nice hack, probably one of the best GE hacks I have ever seen. A brand new map, texture hack, a little bit of ASM hack in GE Setup... well done.

  • @xxmago Their field of view is actually pretty good, you can test that on a really open level like Surface.

    The problem is that guards use the collision tiles for their line of sight. If they can walk to you in a straight line, they can see you, but if there's a gap (like one caused by a railing, or ledge) they can't. The same data is also used for firing at you, which is why they won't shoot you over railings, and why any bullets that they do fire hit an invisible wall.

  • As for sound, they don't hear explosions, all they hear is gunfire. Every weapon has a loudness variable, which is used to determine how many shots it takes for the guards to hear you. The more shots fired, the higher the chance of them reacting, even with the silenced weapons. Some guards won't react to gunfire no matter what, depending on their action block. I'm not sure how far sound travels in GE.

    Amusingly, in the weapon data, it turns out the shotgun is as loud when firing as the tank.

  • It is; the stage was originally called Matrix in Perfect Dark, before being renamed Grid.

  • Something to do with those models and a limitation of the video plugin I was using when I recorded this. Normally, when you destroy them, they simply appear blackened. They don't have a destroyed copy of themselves, like the crates and mainframes do. The plugin doesn't support blackening them (I'm not sure why, since it does on the other objects that do have destroyed models).

    Other video plugins can do the destruction effect properly, but have trouble with textures used on the walls.

  • the enemy AI was a quite dumb, but it was still that classic Goldeneye style except on the PC

  • Well, GoldenEye was pretty much at the top when it came to AI back in the day. The guards may be dumb in some ways (always falling into your traps, for one), but they just had so many different ways of attacking. Contrast with the FPS games that came before it, where the enemies were completely predictable.

    I think the biggest limitation of the guards was their inability to shoot you when there isn't a clipping link between you and them. This is also why they can't see you over railings.

  • That's not a weapon, thats just a key item named "Falcon Schematic". I guess Dragonsbrethren wanted to make the weapons in research based on Perfect Dark weapons.

  • thats incredible goldeneye and perfect dark become one to bad they cant remake those games although the wii controls would suck for those games

  • I don't know, I think they could pull the Wii controls off. The aiming mode is already very similar to aiming with the remote, except it snaps back when you stop pressing a direction instead of you needing to recenter yourself. Movement would be easy enough, and there are plenty of buttons for everything.

    Shame it'll never happen. Even if the legal stuff gets cleared up, you know it'll just end up emulated on the VC. I have a feeling that's why Nintendo wouldn't sign off on the X360 remake.

  • Well, the map was already ported from Perfect Dark by Wreck, Zoinkity, and SubDrag. If you go to the GoldenEye Vault you can download a pack with all of PD's maps converted for use in GE, with the exception of some that were too large (those are still available, but in multiple parts).

    The mission itself was created with the Goldeneye Setup Editor.

  • I somewhat get why the guards use the ZMG-9MM Subs. In PD, they had the CMP-150, which was pretty much the standard dataDyne SMG. (And G5 is Dyne's Chicago Center.)

    Well, nice job.

  • Yeah, that's pretty much why I chose it. I think the ZMG is stronger than the CMP150, but both guns have a 32 round magazine. In hindsight I should've had a few guys armed with magnums, too; a lot of the G5 guards carried DY-357's.

    I originally planned on replacing the Janus marine's textures with ones used by the G5 guard, but that never happened for some reason. I think I was so eager to get this out that I just completely forgot about it!

    Besides, G5 uniforms look SO similar to Janus Marines it wouldn't be worth the trouble just to swap the textures xD

  • lol yeah. But one thing in this mission... 007 should have came in with a business suit (tie and all). That would have made him less suspicious on camera.

  • Funny you mention that! Originally Bond was going to start this mission in a suit with a briefcase. He would be led up to the glass floor area by a guard, where he would meet with the directory under the guise of being a client. The director would be called away, and then Bond's mission would begin from there.

    I scrapped that plan and went with a more action-based mission instead. I don't think having the meeting would've really added anything, and would've only served to slow you down.
