Maybe brokers never started the mess but they sure contributed and benefited from it. Far too many investors had their accounts stuffed with the crappy stocks while brokers collected the commissions.

I think this focuses too much blame on brokers. The presidents (Clinton and Bush), and bankers, head CEOs, bank execs, congress are the ones to blame. Bankers were the ones that created the sub prime loan scheme and then politicians where the ones who deregulated the banks and allowed it to continue. This whole down turn had nothing to do with stock brokers.
