Ted didn't want to be President. He ran because he thought he had to, and because his family expected him to.  That's the way he was raised. I think the truth is that this man was scared to death of being assassinated if he became President. And who could blame him? Had he won the nomination someone probably WOULD have killed him - or at least would have taken a shot. The man wasn't interested in this cursed job. He liked his life too much. But he didn't have a choice.
