@88Metallica Yeah man I'd agree with that. Rusty's playing is unbelievable if you're just looking for speed, but in terms of expression I think he is limited. I'd probably put him in the same category as Michael Angelo Batio.

Being a fast guitar player is great, but in my opinion, expression is what makes them interesting. That's why it annoys me when I see "This is the god Petrucci takes lessons from" because Petrucci is a sick shredder, but he can do everything else perfectly too hahah.

Yeah technically speaking Rusty IS mind-blowing, but honestly I don't think he'll ever have the talent and musicianship to play guitar with as much maturity and expression as Petrucci does.

But at the same time, different genres demand different musical skills, and I think each of them are well suited to what they play. For example, you'd never see Rusty in a country-rock group, that just wouldn't make ANY sense.

I used to love Rusty Cooley, but then realized how much he over-uses shredding ( it gets boring ). There are other guitarists out there who are just as sick at shredding, but that use other techniques too and blend it all together so that there's a BALANCE!! And it brings the guitar playing to a whole new level.

Search up "Andromeda solo" by Marco Sfogli, you'll see what I mean. If not, I must be going crazy.
