  • There's nothing like the easy harmonies of a family singing together. Lovely.

  • God bless Shelby Foote

  • comme elle est belle cette chanson!

  • What a beautiful song!

  • This is exquisite -- folk music of the best kind! Very beautiful, indeed, and it reminds me of the kind of music my father and his siblings played in Saskatchewan during the 30s and later in BC when they moved west. A fiddle, guitars, sometimes an accordion or piano, always a voice or voices singing in harmony, and, of course, dancing too. Those were the days when prairie people made their own entertainment and everyone took part in some way or other -- real "folk" music! Lovely!

  • look at 'lil rufus!!!! this is beautiful!!!!!!

  • So sad that its inaudible - please, please pump up the volume!

  • It's not a song of the civil war. This song was wrtten by Stefen C Foster during the great depression 1854. In the movie "Georgia" Mare Winningham says 1859, it's a mistake too.

  • What a wonderful and sad song!

  • O hard ons come again no more.

  • i love this

  • I first heard this on "Song of the Civil War" CD. A rare jem of a album from the amazing TV series.

  • SO WONDERFUL

  • I can't even say how moved I am by this wonderful clip. I can taste the salt on my tongue.

    Rick

  • Absolutely wonderful, especially when the bass part comes in, and the young tenor singer is outstanding. God Bless you Kate and the other family members. Thank you all so much.

  • "the young tenor singer" Sylvan (the child) or Rufus (the teeneger)

  • So beautiful -- spine-tingling harmonies!

  • So much feeling. Thank You to the performers for their wonderful talent.

  • Thank you Kate

  • bless and love.

  • God bless and keep you Kate

  • That is so very lovely! What an amazing family they were/are. Kate will be so missed.

  • Allthe Britannies, Nicoles, Jessicas whatever...pale in comparison. The transcendent remains so.....

  • Kate has just died from cancer and this could be a tribute to her- she left a fine legacy and thanks to youtube she will always be remembered. god bless

  • @jteeton

Yes it could be a worthy tribute to her.

The last song she wrote Proserpina, and her last public performance of it will symbolise in my memory the contribution Kate made to Canada, world music and Peace.

  • Utterly, utterly beautiful. First choice on my eight Desert Island Discs.

  • I remember meeting Kate and Anna at a performers' tent and was so impressed with their graciousness, and the most amazing performance. Kate...you will be missed.

  • RIP, sweet Kate. The worldd is a dimmer place without you.

  • A sumptuous peformance from an extraordinary family.

  • I like this version, and I think Stephan Foster would have, too. I think it respects the song's origins. I think the style of the performance is true to the sensibilities of the Victorian era.

    Good version.

  • I really like your version a lot!

  • Almost indescribably moving. Magnificent.

  • Seems like the right song for this time in history.

  • Peace...

Unfortunately so timeless. Kate and Anna McGarrigle and Joel Zifkin violin from Songs of the Civil War. to iTunes

  • perfect.

  • If all families were so sweet, we'd be in heaven.

  • ma un po' più di smile no eh??

è una canzone bellissima non piangete mentre la cantate..

    SMILE SMILE WHEN YOU SING!!

  • Perhaps you don't understand the words of the song. It isn't a "smiley" song- it's about a life of hardship and anguish. The two verses we don't hear are even more morose than these. Its application was especially appropriate in this documentary on the Civil War by Ken Burns. One generally doesn't smile when singing about morose or somber subjects.

  • It"s not a song of the Civil War but during the great depression 1850' written by Stephen C Foster 1854.

  • I am sure that was a PBS Special

  • Now that, boys and girls, is the best way to learn how to sing.

  • This one of the best renditions of the song.

  • Never seen Rufus with a ponytail before! Gorgeous.

  • sweet

  • According to Amazon, the release date was in 1991

  • bwaaahahahaha!!!!

  • And martha's unrecognisable!

  • Beautiful! Rufus looks like a wee bairn! Wonderful! thank you for sharing!

  • well I'd have said this was 1994-5-6 ish??? :D So he'd be about 20...? That's a guess!

  • Rufus looks so young, how old was he?

  • Rufus has longer hair than Martha...and gosh don't they look young!

  • Excellent! Thank you for sharing...
