In an interview, Leonard said that he thought there were a few of his songs that were better translated via other singers (e.g., Billy Joel on Light As A Breeze). This, here, sounds like a Woody Guthrie imitation.. how 'bout Johnny Cash doing a Leonard Cohen song. I like Teddy Thompson's version better.
Great song...Teddy Thompson does it justice as well...sat on the same counter stool at Wilensky's that LC sat on...Fairmout and Clark, but then I did grow up there.
@Tinhamper I grew up in the area too. Laval and Pine ave but I thought it was a place on Milton near McGill that we used to stop in going home after school - MTL High
@contactviolet ....naw it was Fairmount...drove by last year but couldn't look because of the traffic. Out in Baie D'Urfe now...used to hang at de Bullion and Roy....close to you.
@Tinhamper wow I lived on Roy and Laval and had friends living on the corner of Laval and Napoleon and on City Hall in between Roy and Napoleon. We would often hang out in the parking lot of the school yard between city hall and de Bullion & Roy. We probably used to have some friends in common. What years? I lived in that area from 61 to about 85. the 60's were the years I would hang out there.. Live in Ottawa now everyone is dispersed
hahaha...i love them both. i've just discovered that my favourite men all look a bit similar. take Dustin Hoffman, L. Cohen and Al Pacino for instance :)
"if I've got to remember that's a fine memory", used to sing this to my girlfriend over the phone. I went and bought a Jews harp too, sounded just like this.
Świetnie wykonuje ten utwór Maciek Zembaty w swoim tłumaczeniu.

@mirek2201 w którym jest chyba nieścisłość, w miejscu gdzie cohen śpiewa o poście, a zembaty o pchełce, n'est pas?

The look on Leonards face at 2.01 is as deep as the ocean.
What a superb piece of songwriting.

I said the same thing on another LC montage, one of the pics he really does look like Pacino. Hansome man, Cohen, always had a crush on him :-)

Yes, Teddy Thompson does the song perfect respect and heart-felt feeling. I am sure LC would agree.

This is remeniscent of the "sad" songs done by John Prine and others of his ilk. It's done with toungue firmly planted in cheek. LOVE IT!!!!!!!

LOL..........another example of Leonard's wit. This must have been from his "Nashville" period. I just want to shout out "YEE HAW!!!!!!!!!!!!

i rarely like covers better than the original, but the teddy thompson live version capture the emotion of the lyrics perfectly.
