I listen to this, and i just think to myself would any solo artist ever been able to pull something like this off? I love soul, james brown, soloman burke, but this has soul too.
Thanks for your poetical sweetness in writing, but I did'n't even mentioned the word ''race'', in fact I only was hinting at the ethnological-historical origin of the different traditional-folkloristical music - e.g.: tarantella is a folk Italian music. I think everybody, even today, say ''black music'' for blues, soul etc, and ''white music'' for brit-pop, without any ''racistic meaning''. So did I.

P.S.
I am Italian and precisely a non-Berlusconi voter.
@sergiosozi who is benvenuto berlusconi? speaking off colour and voting for celentanos sound&vision...what would that be...grey? as a matter of fact cant beat a leak of fascination ;-)
As usual it's a personal way of mixing black and white music, but, sorr, this time the result is'nt the best. I prefer the ''purely white'' songs of the Thin White Duke.
@desolationrow Why does it matter where people find new music from the media? I agree it gets tiresome when people constantly talk about video games on these videos, but there aren't really a whole lot of other places this music is used anymore. Most radio stations today only play a few songs per artist, and don't really present a wider representation of an artists library, and young people aren't very likely to hear about this music from their friends.
I've found this to be the perfect music for cruising around the seedy parts of town in a beat up, 20-odd year old brown Chrysler Fifth Avenue, wearing Ray-Bans.
eveytime i request this sng at my bar they look at me strange ,, like how a black man gonna like david bowie?!! i don't give a damn...this song is (like i said before) FUNKY!!!!
Been a bowie fan all my life and love Luther - just been listening to Change. Was amazed to just listen to "Funky Music" from Luther -and it is the original of this song. The Bowie version is beautiful though - but originally it is a Luther Vandross song and idea. Bowie changed some of the lyrics but not all.
Luther Vandross originally fronted a band called, "Luther" and recorded two albums on the Cotillion label and this song was on one called simply "Luther". The song was originally called, "Funky Music" and was the lead cut on side one. I truly treasure those two albums and I understand Luther Vandross controlled rights to both albums but did not want them released on cd because he felft they were not up to his standards. His family now conrols rights to both of them. It is a shame!
Amazing song from an amazing album, Young Americans - just to confirm, Luther wrote the original lyrics and i believe basic song structure, then Bowie added his own lyrics. He said to a young Luther at the time, "Can I change the lyrics?" ... to which Luther replied "Can you change the lyrics? You're David Bowie, I still live with my mother.... of course you can!" Brilliant.
I just wish one day I'll wake up and these real classic songs gonna beat down that "Justin what?" garbagge. This is the proof how sick and unfair today's world really is.. ://
or proof that music changes and people who grew up in the generation of certain music will always enjoy it more than the music of other generations, people need thier generations of music because it stops them feeling like a has been and that thier life actually meant something
there's a behind the music VH1 programme (i think it's vh1 but dont quote me) where luther talks about this that might be of interest to you. See my above comment.
i've never heard this before, great GREAT GREAT?I LIKE IT,this song is so much FFFFFFFUNKY...........................i heard an another version of this song by fat larrys band,it's a good version too.
@ynja02 Luther Vandross wrote this song after being hired to be his background singer. The album was already done but David Bowie liked it so much he went back to the studio to record it.
@deeshizznit - WOW, I'm old enough to remember when the albumn released and all this time I had *no* idea Luther V wrote this and did background vocals... one of my all-time fav tracks. Stunned. RIP Luther - you did real good with this one!
I just can't get over this funky beat;Been listening to this album since 1983.(Not every day)...I used to listen to "David Live"everyday for I don't know how long?Don't know why:It just doesn't get old easily.
@DetonatorYellow --well, you could transport yourself back there in a Time Machine OR you can write your own songs and be the Good Music of the next decade. Don't forget- we didn't have cell phones back then, or EVEN CDs or video tapes or MTV or YouTube! NONE of that ! It was a different world of 12 inch vinyl and rare concerts. Go see a movie called Peggy Sue Got Married and get a whole new attitude on when we are born - you'll feel better !
I Have thought of writing my own Pieces, But well Once i Get a Borla Installed on the Challenger I'd have an Instrumental Orchestra in the Garage.LoL. Peggy Sue got married. Sounds like a Chick Flick. I'll Stick to The original Gone In 60 Seconds or something.
Damn, I was just reading the comments & it was said that Bowie never performed this live, it got me thinking how amazing it would have been for him to perform this during the Reality Tour! This is an amazing song & to hear it updated with a fresh sound would have been brilliant! I think that like Fame 90 it would have been a hit all these years later. I can't think of many songs Bowie has done that wouldn't be a hit but good old corporations don't see art they see money they push crap not art.
This was the result of Lurther Vandross's "Funky Music" when Bowie heard Luther messing around with it in the studio where Bowie was recording Young Americans Bowie asked if they could record it. Luther was there with his buddy Carlos & good friend & wife of Carlos Robin. Carlos was Bowie's guitarist. Bowie was so impressed with Luther that he gave him the task of doing the vocal arrangements for the whole album we all know how that turned out. A new chapter for Bowie, a shock for Ziggy fans!
@MusicCollaborator I was 11 when Aladdin Sane came out, then every year for about 6 years, Bowie would come out with a new style. The Diamond Dog, the Young American, The Thin White Duke... i was too young to be shocked, it was the older fans got confused!
What do you think of Simon Cowell's idea of having a Bowie theme on XFactor this year? I like XF but don't want to hear the songs desecrated lol!
@averilleX I despise the corporate processed cheese of today's music & don't like when people speak of Bowie & GaGa as if she is even close to his level. But I like that if they had Bowie songs on then it would expose a whole new group/generation to REAL ART! Can you imagine discovering Bowie for the first time now when he has so much stuff to listen to? Too young to be shocked? I wasn't lol, I remember the Diamond Dogs poster on the ceiling above my brothers bed, it freaked me out.
@averilleX what was your first experience with Bowie? Alad? What did you think when Low came out? My first actual experience was when my bro had a Diamond Dogs poster above his bed. As for Bowie's music I had loved "Fame" & first saw him on Soul Train, then a week later they had Ziggy on The Midnight special, I had feelings stir that I had never felt. I would wake up thinking about Bowie's Ziggy show, it had a huge impact. I never seen anything like it. I started my singing career thnks to him
@MusicCollaborator i was about 7-8 when Space Oddity came out so that's probably my first memory .. him in the spacesuit ... the same year as the moon landing which had a big impact on us kids. So literally i hardly remember a time without David! The first album i liked tho was Aladdin Sane. My standing fave is still Young Americans, amazing u saw him first time round on Soul Train, we couldn't see that in the UK at the time ...
So hot ... I was STRUTTIN' it, in my youth, to this song. I seduced countless boys just by walking into a club and dancing. I cut the tempo in half and just moved real slow and acted out every lyric with my choreography,... real slow..... I became one with the music. Put the song on in every house I was a guest in and got others to dance too. Those were the days when I wore my clothes real tight.
@durgaaa You know, I like your style, plus you love the songs made in th 60s and 70s just like me. I hate most of the crap made today. I love this song, and some people think I'm crazy for liking these songs. Then I play this song and sing along with the words is makes me feel good that u can understand the words in this song and not in todays music.
I can't get the story straight on this song. Which came out first, Funky Music by Luther Vandross or this song, and who wrote what for who? Little help
Tricky one. In fact, the song was first written by Vandross and entitled "Funky Music". He then worked with Bowie who changed its lyrics which gave birth to this song, fascination. It came out on the young americans album in 1975. Then, Vandross released the original one, Funky Music, on the Luther album in 76. So the original version came out after Bowie's version.
I fail to see how any of this relates to David Bowie. Skinner, you are a cock. Egg guy, I don't know enough to make a call on this one. Just chill your bean.
@lors999, funny thing is the alphabeat song actually mentions "the young dudes" in their verse....along with the title it always reminded me of Bowie.
What? So love either comes out of my ass or limewire? Dude, if you're going to insult me, at least come up with a good one. You're just embarrassing yourself now.
Damn, insult of the year, guy. You ought to write that shit down, it's THAT good you've almost made me start crying. So you know apprently what the new age generation slang to use but you haven't realised what are the popular and unpopular filesharing and p2p services to use. But it's fun to point out the irony in things.
thanks to gta IV i´m hoe on this song. best joint ever!

I can't get the story straight on this song. Which came out first, Funky Music by Luther Vandross or this song, and who wrote what for who? Little help
lednails 2 years ago

Just chill your bean.

it's disgusting that the first related video to this is alphabeat, who shouldn't be on the same page as bowie at all!
lors999 2 years ago 4
@lors999, funny thing is the alphabeat song actually mentions "the young dudes" in their verse....along with the title it always reminded me of Bowie.

What? So love either comes out of my ass or limewire? Dude, if you're going to insult me, at least come up with a good one. You're just embarrassing yourself now.
Followthategg 2 years ago
and anyway who uses pharases like "Old School" anymore...NOBODY
skinner768 2 years ago
Damn, insult of the year, guy. You ought to write that shit down, it's THAT good you've almost made me start crying. So you know apprently what the new age generation slang to use but you haven't realised what are the popular and unpopular filesharing and p2p services to use. But it's fun to point out the irony in things.
