OH MY GOSH! i have been trying to find a video that will actually show me how to talk in an irish accent! i have been looking at videos for two months and i cant find the right video this video is ok but anyways, can someone show me a good place to find out how to speak in an irish accent? i really want to but can someone actually help me?
"Why does this vid have more than a quarter of a million hits?"
We'll I watched it cos he's hot and Irish.
And he has a cat!
And he reminds me of Cillian Murphy (the best Irish actor ever) in his build / facial structure / pasty white colour (BTW, although youtube is telling me I misspelled "colour" that is how we spell it in NZ - the RIGHT way)
your tops almost the same color as your top therefor your top looks like it has eyes :), this video is help full because i wasnt born in ireland i was born on st patricks day so i want to learn the accent
is it true, that the reason that dubliners are nicknamed jackiens is coz they waved the union jack when the queen came to ireland many many years ago and they let down the irish nation? is this true?
@teee2 It isn't being lazy it has more to do with the fact that English isn't our native language and it isn't so long ago that we were forced to use English. The English can't even speak their native language properly now they are lazy.
@story46 I'm American and Bobo's accent is Irish. He has different influences in it but it is definitely Irish. Those of you who think he is trying to sound American don't take into account not only did he live in the US,his parents did also.Who influences a child's speech patterns more than his parents?
# There is an accent for each of the 32 counties of Ireland with some counties having several accents, e.g. Dublin. # No Irish person says "top of the mornin' to ya". Each county have different ways of speaking. Mix a Kerryman with Cavaners and he wouldn't have a clue what they're on about. # Languages spoken are Hiberno-English and Gaeilge (translates to 'Gaelic' but called Irish not Gaelic. Gaelic is a group of languages which includes Irish and Scots.) # The Irish for Ireland is Éire not Erin
Lolz I'm from Dublin for Hat we say Ha but we still say the t you just can't hear it and the same with Cat and some of us are commeners so we say like Get Yisser coats Instead of get your'e coats and Hello like Alri lolz :D and wat are yi doin and all :D
in palestine there's like 1000000000000000000000000000 different kind of accents
my village has an accent that it is TOTALLY different than the accent of the town near us !! so different ! and we are like 1 town !!! so if someone wanna do a video about the Palestinian accents it would be 100 part and every video is 10 minutes !
i love the irony of an irish lad trying to speak like a yank and teaching the irish accent. DUDE, YOU SHOULD LIKE, TOTALLY, LIKE GO OUTSIDE FOR A WHILE AND TURN OFF YOUR TV FOR A DAY. As we irish like to say, you are a dope
@bobomcgraw thats because you have now chosen to speak with a false american accent. what would make such a boring, drone, uncharismatic, unlikable, witless person such as yourself, make such a video. You are surely the last person to talk about the topic as it is clear from hearing you speak that you do your best to hide yours
@bobomcgraw what you lack in charisma you make up for in grammatic impecability. My point is still, to me, a valid one. Living in a place till the age of three isn't enough to obtain the accent, I lived just outside Belfast till i was ten but i sound the same as the rest of clare now at the age of 23. YOUR accent is the one YOU choose to use and that is obvious to anybody Irish who watches the above video. It's not an american twang, it is a premeditated decision on your part, badly hidden :)
@story46 I lived in Chicago for three years, boarded in Tuam for five where I was surrounded by people from all over the country as well as some people from outside.
I lived in Dublin and Galway for two years and Dundalk for seven months.
@sarahtmouse His accent is fake. I am Irish and I can tell you that this fake accent D4 its called is being used by people that are ashamed of their original Irish accent. I don't like it as we are losing our heritage. It is the same in America judging by the tv programs.
@salthillairshow Nope.I have a real Bronx accent.Especially when I'm pissed off!I lived in Northern California and that effects my accent. But I am real Nooo Yawk.Lots of things effect accents.Where you live,go to school, family & close friends, ethnic background. There are many different New York accents.Depending on what part of the city you are from to what ethnic group you belong to.And we all influence each other!Very interesting.Accents are great.
@Marydawgs There is a big difference between fake accents we will call them cultivated accents and accents that develop naturally over hundreds of years. The exception is accents that are picked up like an Irish person living in the US for years and they end up with a US region accent.
shut up u clown, r u obssed with our accent r somthing? and when u say country people, do u meen the rest of the countrys population that lives outside dublin? go stroke ur pussy lol
@TheFlemingsgarage Actually, Irish accent is great - all of Irish accents are great as the country itself. And the country people are people with this kind of attitude, which you present. @bobomcgraw I imagine very few of the people who have watched the video understood you were talking about the pronunciation of vowels in the Irish language. If I speak of a French accent, or a German accent, and give examples with English words, it will almost certainly be interpreted as the accents of French or German people when they speak in English. @bobomcgraw You say "why are we talking about the pronunciation of Irish words? I was talking about Irish pronunciation of English words."
Why??? Because a few comments ago, you said "Star is an English word, so the pronunciation of the 'a' doesn't really apply there. I'm talking about how the letter is pronounced in Irish words."
Rather confusing.
So, for clarity's sake, which are you talking about in your video: the Irish pronunciation of English words, or the pronunciation of Irish words?
@rgainsburg I'm talking about how the pronunciation of vowels in the Irish language has influenced the pronunciation of those vowels when speaking English.
I use English words as examples because the video is in English, the people watching understand English.
I don't think it would make much sense to reference words in a language nobody here speaks.
The letter "a" is pronounced in many more ways than you stated: didn't you think of "star", "car", "far" etc? Also "fall", "draw", "awful", and so on? Not to mention its rendering as the reduced vowel in "woman", "adjust", "stomach".
The "t" is pronounced as you suggested only in word-final position as in "sweet", or in the middle as in "butter"; but never in word-initial position as in "time". Worth mentioning, perhaps?
I love your cat lol :)

Star is an English word, so the pronunciation of the 'a' doesn't really apply there.
I'm talking about how the letter is pronounced in Irish words.
Another thing, I know people who pronounce words like bar with a short 'a', they pronounce the 'a' as it is in hat or cat.
You're right about the position of the letter 't' changing it is pronounced.
bobomcgraw 1 year ago
@bobomcgraw Changing the way it is pronounced.
bobomcgraw 1 year ago
@bobomcgraw I don't understand - all the examples you give are of English words. How is star any more English than hat or hate??

I'm using English words because they're better known than Irish words.

And what Irish speakers would pronounce "th" as you suggest? In which dialect, for example, is the "th" in "bothar", "athair" or "blaithin" pronounced with a dental plosive?
rgainsburg 1 year ago
@rgainsburg That term is new to me.
I would pronounce agat with a soft t.
Duit, the t is pronounced like 'tch', like ditch.
I think I would pronounce sliotar as a hard t.
bobomcgraw 1 year ago
@bobomcgraw Why are we talking about pronunciation of Irish words?
I was talking about Irish pronunciation of English words.
In Irish th is generally pronounced as a h, so it must have proven awkward somewhere in the past when people starting speaking English.
This inability, in certain areas, to pronounce some letter combinations must have started somewhere.
