putting on a stage performance of this great noir classic, Mitchems shoes are some mighty ones 2 fill but this film has so much 2 give for inspiration
Magic movie, it's a such of oniric experience to watch " The night of the hunter". I think it's a movie that it's out of all the standard conditions of cinema. Magic movie.
Oh my god yes. He was an amazing actor. His villain characters, like Max cady and Reverend Harry Powell sends chills down my sppine even to this day. Good thing we still have Gary Oldman around playing great villain characetrs.
where your pairents? ain't got any. oh go away go away..... lol.. i love this movie. i think when i was a kid, the one part i loved most is when they escaped through the river and he screams.
I could never get into this movie. The serious scenes always felt more laughable than frightening, the river sequence more cheap-looking than surreal. But I know I'm in the minority.
This is one of my favourite Robert Mitchum movies I remember seeing this at school as part of video production (Ithink now they call the subject film appreaciation) very atmospheric movie Robert Mitchum and Lillian Gish were brilliant in this movie. I also remember seeing one of Lillian Gish's silient movies called The Wind where she did her own stunts jumping from one of bit ice to another as she tried to get from side to another on a fast moving river.
@tich302001 If I remember correctly, Lillian Gish was taught how to shoot a gun by a real life Wild West outlaw who had escaped and come to Hollywood and actually became an actor.
this was an oscar winning performance but, he was overlooked , too dark a character they said,,isnt that what a good actor is all about, playing any character well !!!!!!!
I first saw this movie when I was a kid back in 68 or 69. I will never forget Robert Mitchems voice calling out " Chilllllllldren, Chillllllllldren, I can hear you breathin' children." He was a great actor. And please don't forget Miss Lillian Gish who was also great in this movie. They just don't make them like that anymore.
it was remade, in 1991. it was hideously bad. and if it's such a classic, which i completely agree with, it's one of the best films of all time, then FUCKING LEAVE IT ALONE. classics don't need remaking. it's a great white. they haven't evolved over millions of years, because they were perfect killers to begin with. they don't need an update. goddamn it.
I saw this movie four years ago at school and I liked it! Sitting in the room with a bunch of pot gith kids watching a 1955 scary movie. Those were the days!
One doesn't get the least sense of what a great movie this was from the trailer. At least they didn't use the giant flying title cards...gives away one of the shock scenes, though (Mitchum murdering his new wife). Interesting.

Just saw this on TCM. When Gish ran into the house and brought out that shotgun, you knew Ms. Cooper wasn't playing.

@Ashogo it's a shitty and overrated movie with terrible acting, many unnessecary characters and a plot that goes on and on and on...
The scene where Ruby throws that hairbrush on Powell has to be on the top-list of worst acting ever.

yes, directed by charles laughton...the movie didn't do well at the boxoffice, but it showcases mitchum's excellent vocalist skills.

A movie too spooky for it's time, Mitchum is incredible as the preacher meets pure malevolent evil. A must see for classic movie fans.

@tophat314 They NEVER DID made them like that. This oddity being Charles Laughton's ONLY official* foray into directing.
* He is the uncredited director of "The Man on the Eiffel Tower" (1949)
