Her joy on the ice is magical. The one thing that confuses me though is: Did she use the same program every time she skated. It seems that every clip I watch of her it's the same music and program. Was that normal back then? Anyway, she is a legend.
We keep hearing, "there is more to skating than jumps." Anybody who does not know what that means can watch Janet Lynn, and begin to find the meaning. Absolutely breathtaking. Exquisite. And timeless.
The one single jump I wish we still saw today - because I think it is an interesting and eye-catching transitional move - is the one foot axel. Janet did it a lot and it always draws your attention.
true, i do agree with hattie loves cattie the real true amazing skaters peggy flemming and dorthy hammil dont get as much attention and publicity or credit as the ones that're popular, yet not as spectacular like michelle kwan, kristi yamaguchi, katrina witt, sasha cohen, and tonya harding
Funny,I think most will agree that Janet and Michele are more loved and revered than the actual American gold medalists, with the exception of Peggy and Dorothy.
Janet skates with sooo much joy! Where do we see anybody today skate with so much speed, grace, unbelievable technical perfection? what a Lost Art in skating is such beautiful moves like a 'half-axel' or "mazurka's" ? Or is it simply because Janet did them the best,, no one tries to compare?
How about Michele Kwan who has won more medals than Janet and still didn't win the Olympic gold.Janet didn't win any Worlds and had a shorter career.Sports induced athsma didn't help either.
@Kounting6 Well if the difficulty standards were the same as before, if all you had to do were doubles many more wold skate with joy. But now, athleticism real flexibility is a must and thats a good thing in my opinion. And i think these rinks were smaller thats why she appears faster. I respect Lynn, but I also respect the skaters of today.
With some of Janet Lynn's videos, that I've seen since they've started popping up on the web a few years ago, they don't measure up to my memory of her. THIS video does, and more. For me, it is the most satisfying skating performance on YOUTUBE, and Janet's best performance. It reminds me of how much I missed her when the next queen came along, Hamill, as fine a skater as she was. Dorthy's first TV special was great, however.
In figure skating, long after people forget who won what medal, THIS PERFORMANCE, as bad as the sound quality is, will live on as a testament to the extraordinary talent of Janet Lynn. It is an absolute tour-de-force of freedom, musicality and the essence of a special skater who is responsible for defining the modern style in women's skating. Does anyone today, 25 years later, do any better double Axels, or skate a program that is this beautiful.
you are so correct! Lynn's skating was so joyous and expressive, and I wish so many of today's skaters had a fraction of her artistry. this should be required viewing for any young skater!
What is the music.....does anyone know????

Which move is the "mazurka"? Time please.
I love to watch skating and I'm soooo thankful for being able to see all these great old programs.

She was so magical on the ice. I get chills when I watch these videos of her. She looks like a beautiful little pixie.

Programs these days are so cluttered... I miss the simple skating, especially when it is done with such perfection.

the flying sit spin at 1:55 is heaven

And in this era scores were generally lower than today so many of those 5.8s and 5.9s would probably be 6.0s today.

I meant to say 35(!) years later, not 25.
