Most small (2-20 mile across) comets are discovered by amateur astronomers (think Shoemaker-Levi 9). If there was a large planet sized body close enough to the inner solar system to interact with Earth in the next 2 years it would be easily visible to backyard astronomers. So go point a telescope at the sky and look for yourself. Science is about repeatable observations.
