My opinion about the tempo is that most ensemble play Gabrieli way too quick. They mostly use this pieces to show their technical abilities. It results in the listeners becoming accustomed to the too quick tempo thats why you feel it being too slow. This is the right tempo for such complex tones and harmonies to unfold in a rooms resonance -specially if its in a large room that carries the tones during long times.
