i use powerdirector from cyberlink, kinda crappy consumer level editing software designed to cut family videos, it has all these cheesy transitions and effects that i will never touch but its a deacent editing program that can import avchd files and it doesent need a high end computer to run smoothly. plus it was fairly cheap, like €100.

@emeraldbo you can but it's a bit harder. If you want to overlay stuff (like explosions or muzzle flashes) on the screen you need to make sure that the stock footage your using has it's background removed before overlaying it into your movie.

You can also buy some graphics software for effects. Apple's motion is available on the mac app-store for $50.

check out mattsmacintosh, he has some imovie effects tutorials.

Ya, but CS5 doesn't support 32-bit processors, only 64-bit. So if you're stuck with an old 32-bit computer, you have to dig up a CS4 trial or find somewhere selling (legit) CS4 keys.

I plan on making my first action movie over this summer, and I was wondering if there was a way to add muzzle flares to airsoft guns with windows movie maker, that was not totally time consuming, I've already tried to photoshop the flare onto the gun and bring the picture onto the film strip, but there is a black pause in between that and movie clips. @chowbox87 well im pretty sure that u can shorten the picture in the film strip and have it work fine. i suggest filming everything first, then downloading the free trial of after effects and doing the vfx in a week or two.

@LITTLELEGOLAND It's great for beginners but if you're really into video editing I recommend you purchase a Mac. It comes with iMovie which is a lot more advanced than Windows Movie Maker. One you get more advanced and a lot more money I recommend either Final Cut Pro X or Avid Media Composer if you're a big spender. I'm currently on Final Cut Pro X but hope to switch to Avid in a few years.
