  • this is what i chant when i hit the ritual bong

  • Yeah the dude that stumbles stumbled because he fuckin hit himself so goddamned hard

  • I honestly thought it translated to:

"Oh my god, this is gonna hurt really bad."

  • I was so glad when I recognized the chant during a latin class! Monty Python taught us so much, Romani ite domum and stuff!

  • @Washu1973

I am currently taking latin 2 as an elective, and the proper translation is:

Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest

  • I tried reenacting this in public. One person got the reference. The other two quickly exited so as to avoid any further exposure to my insanity.

  • i love the part they are hitting themselves with planks

  • I luv that part in tha movie it is so funny

  • The one who stumbles is like that stormtrooper who bonks his head. Once you spot it you can never unsee it.

  • They wanted to be drummers ))

  • O Lord Jesus Pies

    Grant them rest

    Gotta love Google translator

  • *thuds self in the head*

  • at 0:21 the monk almost trips :D

  • I wonder if someone could validate if the closeup face is that of Neil Innes... I think it looks like him, but I don't know of a source to confirm this.

  • Somebody should make a remix of this

  • I see what you did there ;) At first I thought though that you found more scenes of the monk than actually existed in the movie. Then I realized however that you only horizontally flipped the first 42 1/2 seconds upon itself. Very clever! Now do the audio, theres gotta be some freaky sumbliminal message in there somewhere!!

Man U had me Baffled!!! =D thumbs up!

  • Things people do for religion

  • @supraliz HAHAH!! funkin' awesome, yeah bro, ppl b krazy

  • A note from your friendly neighborhood Latin student of six years:

The chant is pretty awful latin, but a rough translation if you really need to know is:

"Pious Lord Jesus, give him rest."

  • @13LuckyWishes I was certain domine was translated as mistress.... or jesus, that works.

  • @lordofwafflez Not in this case. Domina is mistress, dominus is Lord. Because it's a direct address the "us" is replaced with an "e." Hence, domine. Iesu is Jesus. ^_^

  • @13LuckyWishes Yeah, that crazy 13th century poet who wrote it in Italy sucks. The uploader spelled it wrong, but this chant has been around in some form or another since the early 1200s. Really the only thing that's ever changed has been modern people replacing the I with a J in "iesu".

  • @13LuckyWishes - Thomas of Celano (1200 – c. 1265) will no doubt will be pleased to know someone is still correcting his Latin, as sung by Catholics the world over for a mere seven centuries or so (minus the head banging with planks of wood. Although I suppose that could be considered optional on the pew in front).

  • @13LuckyWishes

Actually it translates to mean "O sweet Jesus, grant them rest" in English.

  • @13LuckyWishes Yes, it is very rough Latin, but still very cool :3

Pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem. Dona eis requiem sempiternam.

Blessed Jesus, Lord, grant them rest.

    Grant them rest everlasting.

  • I looked up the subtitles on Google Translate, and it seems they need a minor correction... it's "pie", not "pies". Also, if you look up "pie jesu" on Wikipedia, it seems to support that spelling.

  • 0:56 the guy is starting to get dizzy after all that hitting.

  • Me and my friends are doing this for halloween at our school:) can't wait

  • @MyNeverFall Ejejeje, how was it?

Did people at your school get the reference?

  • @MyNeverFall

Were doing it on seniors last day!!! OMG WERE FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i dont understand latin - what are they saying?

  • @CelticWizard113 It means "King Lord Jesus, grant them rest."

  • @jes381990 thanks, since it was Monty Python, i always thought it'd be something stupid. haha

  • @CelticWizard113 Hahaha, that's a reasonable assumption!

  • @CelticWizard113 ouch? id be saying ouch. i think. probably dubbed in the sound tho.....yes, yes we did the sound.

  • I'm gonna go take a shit. When I come back, I hope I have the top comment

  • They arent whipping themselves like they did in the MIddle Ages! No historical accuracy!!!!! D:

  • @Wildcat425B it's a comedy film for zark's sake

  • my drama teacher used this as a reference to how the chanting of the men doing the part of some rabbis in the musical should sound, his exact words were, "Do it exactly like they did, but without smacking yourselves in the head repetitively." after that i had to look it up, im glad i did lol

  • i dont know why, the guy at 0:00 make me remember of eminem...

  • Hit the head harder! xD

  • I love this part, the first time I saw it I laughed so hard that I had to rewind it and watch it again xD

  • Hilarious. I go to a Christian college (not Catholic) and my husband and a bunch of his Bible major buddies are going to do this for Halloween through the student center. I'm making the robes. :D

The hilarity of it is basically that it translates to, "Blessed Jesus, give us a break."

Oh yeah and they're going to use their textbooks as what they hit their heads with.

  • @NiennaLadyOfTears it's from a 13th century hymn and it translates more faithfully to "grant us rest" - traditonally used in funeral mass.

  • @dodgeplow I wasn't going for the exact literal translation. Break= rest.

  • Comment removed

  • The underlying point in this clip isn't really too subtle, but it's still hilarious nonetheless.

  • what monty python video is it where a monk says hes gay?

  • Guy at front left stumbles with almost every hit

  • flip the two parts and then google translate to "Grant them O Lord Jesus, Pies required"

  • translated from latin (by google) i got "them rest, O lord, the gifts of jesus pies

  • I laughed through the entire movie, but when I saw this part for the first time, I laughed hysterically!

  • What they are doing is punishing themselves for their sins, at least that's what I think. This was during the plague, there was also a group called the flagellants, which whipped themselves.

  • @Jc40k1 omfg they are flagellants

  • Pahaha! Dumbass monks and their dumb ways.

  • wow the guy next to the flag carrier doesnt even take blows to the head...he just lightly taps it...the guy who stumbles tho hits himself wicked hard haha

  • @BTella3 Lol He puts his head into it, no wonder he tripped lol

  • @BTella3 Yeah you see him behind the front monks back left side @ 20 you see him stumble... The hits after that show true piety.

  • pies lesu domine ........... dona eis requiem

  • LOL!!

  • i feel lucky for the flag holder. he dosn't have to bang his head

  • pies, O Lord, Jesus, grant them rest

  • HA! Dippy sumbled! xD

  • @ panzersharkcat Ok, except again, the monks are reciting lyrics from a song called Pie Jesu. Look up the lyrics sometime. They don't match the subtitles, that's all I'm saying about this video. And I"m really not trying to be mean or rude or anything, so please excuse me if that's how I'm coming across.

  • 0:00 - 0:15 I only wish I had stubble that amazing.

  • I just remembered that there are no U's in Latin, either. GAIVS IVLIVS CAESAR.

  • @panzersharkcat Actually, in classical Latin, no written Gs either.

    CAIVS IVLIVS CAESAR

(And pronounced "Gaius Yulius Kaisar" on top of it ^^)

  • @SteinbrecherBack Oh, I know. I just didn't bother correcting it yet again.

@CatLuvr69 I know that. I thought you were referring to the Jesu part being wrong. Because I was holding the idiot ball, I failed to notice that there shouldn't be an "s" with "Pie."

  • I know what I'ma gonna be for Halloween!!!

  • Sorry, I love this video and all, but I've got OCD, the spelling on the subtitles is just killing me. It's Pie Jesu. I'm really not trying to offend you, like I said, the video is great, and I'm glad the subtitles are there.

  • @CatLuvr69 There are no Js in Latin. Julius Caesar in the original Latin would be GAIUS IULIUS CAESAR.

  • @panzersharkcat What does Caesar have to do with this? The monks are reciting lyrics from a song called Pie Jesu, it talks about Jesu.

  • @CatLuvr69 Caesar's name was just an example of there being no Js in Latin.

  • @panzersharkcat Sorry, that should say the song talks about Jesus

  • Comment removed

  • the joke is "dear lord" *thwack* "give them a break" it can be interpreted that way

  • "Pie Jesu domine, dona eis requiem" *thwack*

    that never gets old, honestly!

  • @BeakyRed I laugh everytime I see it haha

  • my history teacher used the audio in a lesson of the plague.

  • @GENERALxRAAM1 Nice.

  • @iequalcool me too

  • @GENERALxRAAM1 lol same

  • @GENERALxRAAM1 were watching this now in History about Fudualism(spelling?) and the Plauge XD

  • @xXPuppyChanXx cool, and it's feudalism.

  • @GENERALxRAAM1 yea and thank you :D

  • @xXPuppyChanXx your welcome.

  • @GENERALxRAAM1 what was ure teachers name?

  • Two people got hit with the board too hard.

  • maybe they're just wearing those hoods to hide their huge bruises, lol.

  • More flagellants than monks, really...

  • am I the only one that noticed that the second half of the video is just a mirror of the first half

  • @00DBT0Curin holy shit. i would've never caught that.

  • Oi, that monk at the back next to the flag bearer is skimpin' out on his beatin'! WITCH! WIIIIIIITCH!!one11!

  • The guy second from the front, bottom, coming from the right tripped

  • "pious lord Jesus, grant us rest"*thump*

  • "Pies Iesu Domine, Dona eis Requiem" *bonk* XD I never get tired of that!

  • One person was left wondering if coconuts migrate...

  • the subtitles should read Pies Jesu Domine, Dona eis requiem

  • @musicmastr why? it is latin, at they did not use/have the letter J. they used "I".

  • this is the best scene from this movie! beside the holy hand grenade....

  • I like pies

  • i find it funny that they come up with this type of stuff in the first place! its hilarious! monks hitting themselves with wood while chanting. gold

  • man they could of had a v8

  • Comment removed

  • @Wanderlust67 It's Latin and they don't have the letter J. Therefore they used the capital i. So Iesu is right.

  • @Wanderlust67 Don't we all remember the lesson's from Indy, in Latin Jahova begins with an "I".

  • @my3jeeps . Yep. Thought it was a little "L" and not a capital "I". Snarky commenter stands corrected.

  • You definately wanna be the flag holder for this...

  • Man I hope that I would be the flag carrier in that group.

  • i love that part! XD

  • This is perfect.

    Memorize

    Do at school

    See who gets it

    ???

    Profit!

  • Sadly this is what monks did in the middle ages if they were caught looking at women.

  • Twenty years of watching Python and this still puts a smile on my face. Timeless classic

  • Imagine seeing this in the middle of a Assassin's Creed street. I'd blend into that shit in a minute.

  • in case y'all didnt know, the clip isnt that long, and this is infact the same clip, about 35 sec long, played twice, the second being a mirror image of the first.

  • 0:55 2nd guy to the left tripped XD

  • @sourskitts45 lol, I never noticed that before. XD

  • @iequalcool 0:20 the guy on the right side, second row, he hists himself so hard he gets dizzy and stumbles.

  • @sourskitts45 At 0:22 2nd guy to the right tripped.

  • @sourskitts45 also at 0:24 the second guy to the right

  • @polarek222 I sort of pointed that out already. Glad I'm not the only one who noticed tho!

  • @sourskitts45 haha me neither=) and right before he does that the guy behind him hits his head early

  • @secrets18 look again then buzzkillington

  • @sourskitts45 I saw it that time.

  • @sourskitts45 Dude i think he just hit himself to hard

  • wat language are they chanting in i put it in a translator from german to english and got pies lesu cathedral, dona ice requiem

  • It's latin

  • @talley403 latin, the language of the roman catholic church

  • If im not wrong, the catholic ritual "requiem" was made with this kind of songs. *without the board hit, of course.*

  • Pie what? I think they are singing something about PIE IN THE SKY!

  • @MarcusHolly To quote the great and noble King Arthur;

    "You're a loony."

  • @MarcusHolly yummm i love pie!!

  • @MarcusHolly hahahhahaha, no.

  • why is it that they say iesu when the real chant is jesu?

is it so they cant be accused of blasphemy or something?

  • @ArkhonDhuum hello fellow kiwi- the letter j was not in the latin alphabet. They used 'i' for the y sound that later came to be represented by 'j'. So in a lot of latin writing today the letter 'j' is not used, prob just to confuse us! Sorry for the prosaic explanation.

  • Comment removed

  • @dacj74 thanks for the translation
