SHEEEEESH,,,,,DUDE.If you have to crank an engine that long then you most definately PRIME IT.....got it? The fuel pump is dry.One shot in a carb would spin it mucho times and pick up fuel in an instant. But sheeeeesh,,,,not all that starter grinding.NEVER EVER DO that.
@mctim64 I have trouble grasping the concept of fitting Y Block valve covers on a SBC. Makes about as much sense as relabelling this car as an 83 Delorean
Ummmmm '31 Mercury?????? I don't think so. Mercury came out in '39. Ford did build Canadian "A"s and used roberson screws instead of regular straight blade ones. But it was still a Ford, not a Mercury. I agree, I think thats a SBC with Y-block valve covers. The Dist is straight up and down, a Y-Block goes at an angle. Nice "A" coupe though!
can't explain the ford logo cast into the head,,,tried a y-block Merc valve cover on a sb chevy head I have...way too short.. almost impossible to make those embossed covers..with sleeves and the stroker cranks available today maybe 388 is doable..it sure sounds like a y-block with a stout cam..I heard there was a few NASCAR "mystery" motors made in the windsor ontario plant back in the day..how rare would that be??
@356webber that is absolutely a small block chevy ..no y block ever had the fuel pump on the pass side ..the dist is upright ...no y block has feeze plugs in the block under the heads..and look at the water pump ..definitely a sbc..nice trick with the valve covers though...and i think back in the day if something is stamped [ford],,they did not use the circle around it at the time...
Nice trick with the valve covers - most people admiring it will never know that's a bowtie in disguise
