don't get me wrong i used to love it when the Knopfs got EC up on stage with but i always had nagging doubts about seeing Clapton merely mooching about strumming along in his finest Armani.. like what was the point? to me a bit like an episode of Fawlty Towers (sadly never made) where Peter Sellers turned up breifly as a cab driver keeping the motor running outside the hotel whilst Basil tormented his customers

@shw500 Yes I do. I've felt the same thing for a long time. Knopfler and Clapton have played on stage alot. I don't really understand why Clapton is even on the stage except that Knopler and him are buddies. If Clapton wasn't famous we probably wouldn't even notice anything of it. It is really a distraction that he is pimping himself out like that. The pink crap he wore in at least one concert especially. That guy has issues.

The part starting at 8:06 and ending at about 9:03 is too incredible for words to describe and Knopfler plays it like he is brushing his damn teeth! Why the hell don't they release the Wembley 1985 and Mandela concerts on DVD an CD?

When Mandela was on, stereo radio was only just coming in, it wasn't down here yet so we had to record it in mono. Listen to the begining, they tell you and give you the radio fequencies.

Only mono broadcast on TV aswell, mono video anyway.

The Mandela concert is one of my favourite all time things.

I see it as just a DS concert as the rest was terrible. Mark aired his new Pensa-Suhr and sound to the world. Its a good job that Nelson Mandela was in jail because this wouldn't have happened. But its also good that it led to his release.

Irouzios,,the D-S mandela preview gigs were held at london hammersmith odeon on 8th and 9th june 1988.The tickets didn't go on general sale,they were only available to dire straits club members (or ticket touts who always got hold of them by the dozen).I was there on the 9th,knopfler was wearing this suit,(same one he wore on the mandela concert).so i believe this is the 9-6-88,
