My mates and I thought this was a particularly uncool tune for the intro, but then not many people in the BBC had any idea about popular music back then - John Peel and a handful of others did, but that was about it.
Bloody Hell..........Bang! Im back in 1970/1....I used to watch this with my Cousins, on a B/W Pye dual standard tv set. I remember it working only on 625?
Great programme, unmissable along with Dr. Who in the 1970s.
The TOTP Orchestra's version of "Whole Lotta Love" was introduced as the theme in early 1971, shortly after CCS's version of the tune had been in the UK charts (#13 in November 1970).
Off topic, does anyone remember the neon TOTP logo?
black and white TOTP episodes were usually erased I hear as well as READY STEADY GO footage. Yes that bleach blond Saville was a sight when I first seen him in a magazine.
I thought the start music for this was a Led Zeppelin song, where's that start or am I talking about the wrong show here? (I don't mind this music either, nice and dynamic) I guess that's one of the "wiped" TOTP series starts?
God that picture of Jimmy Saville scared the living shit out of me! How could they do that to people in those days? Did this originally go out in colour? Maybe it looks less scary in colour.
Yes it went out in PAL colour. This is a b/w 16mm film recording (telerecording), however it MAY be possible to restore it to broadcast colour! (using colour recovery -CR using chroma-dots ion the film print)
jim'll Savill looks quite normal for a change at the end of this clip XD

Yes, however, my favourite intro has to be the one with the psychedelic numbers.
