Why would anyone learn how to use swords in this day and age? You KNOW you'll never ever use them or have to defend against them. What are you going to do-carry them around tucked in your belt while you go to work? Are you expecting to be surrounded by sword-wielding goons at the tea house? Seems like it has the same appeal as gay dancing. Just look at the perfect grooming and swishy handkerchief flair. Reminds me of the pirates of penzance. I bet a million dollars he reeks of fish heads.
That's really offensive. Yeah people won't go around carrying them, but just because we live in a modern time doesn't mean we shouldn't preserve the old weapon styles. In close range combat a sword could easily beat a gun.
Most certainly, I'll never have to wield or defend against one of these weapons, but practising weapon styles is still fun. (So is sparring with foam coated swords by the way) And even if attacked, having practised these movements might still come in handy when defending oneself with an umbrella or stick or whatever I can get my hands on. Great video, by the way. All those little movements, so refined. I hope, whem I'm 80, I'll be 10% as good as he was at 15. (might hope in vain though...)
don't forget also that the broadsword forms like the one shown here are practical forms when you are empty handed ;P. In other words the movements are the same you'd just be doing different strikes with your hands instead.
What an ignorant and naive idiot you are for thinking such ridiculous thoughts about something as wonderful as this. I will agree its not as hardcore as pulling out a gun or fist-fighting, but I can guarantee that this is in no way easier than practicing and refining the body and mind as one would in any gym or shooting range
As Stewpedlyinsane said, just because we live in modern times should be forget the old styles. Sure they are outdated, but they were created foremost for kickin' ass.
There's something else in sword practice, it helps to form your body for taiji, every weapon has a purpose in taiji. But for someone who had never practice taiji, it doesn't mean anything. IT may look gay dancing for mosfonotoc, i'd like to see him in empty hand combat with Chen Zhenglei, he'd last 3 seconds. So ignorant!
