Another source of Fresnel lenses is old overhead projectors (just below the glass plate). They are also used in lighthouses. We used to use small magnifying-glasses to torture other kids when I was at school, I don't think its allowed nowadays!
@Tuba408Bass You should carry both. Along with a fire steel. In my fire kit I have, 2 bic lighters, a torch lighter, storm matches, a fire steel, and a small fresnel lens.
ok, im going to make a hole on the roof of the house, install a damn fresnel mirrow n pointed directed to my stove., i be have my coffe in 15 seconds n a steak on 10.,lol
I think this demonstration has been slightly aided by the hot surface he placed it on, assuming he had it pre-set up before recording. But overall, a great vid to show the power of a large fresnel lens.
Fresnel stage lights are so named because they employ a fresnel lens. These lenses are used in other applications as well, including projection systems, other lighting systems, and solar systems. This video isn't demonstrating a stage light, it is showing the effects of focusing the sun through a large fresnel lens.

Wow, really? No shit dude, I read his comment wrong obviously. Do you really think if a was a lighting guy, I wouldn't know all of this bullshit you have written here??? You really did not need to go through the process of writing all of that.
My comment was meant to inform others who may have read your comment. Also, you never bothered to claim you were a lighting guy. As a media professional, I sincerely hope I never end up working with you, whoever you are.
You can get cheap Fresnel lenses at virtually any office supply store (Staples/Office Depot has them). They're called 'full page magnifiers' or something like that. They're used for reading. The only problem is many times they come slightly bent, but not always, so check them every so often and you'll find flat ones.
If you have more money, you can buy replacement fresnel lenses for overhead projectors or big-screen TVs.
It's difficult to explain in a small number of words. The Wikipedia article "fresnel lens" explains it well.
A short answer is: Fresnel lens' have curved bits, but they also have bits that are supposed to be flat. If the flat bits end up bent they don't work very well.
@GREENPOWERSCIENCE Hi, so if the Fresnel lens is smaller than 30" x 40", while keeping everything constant (same volume water, same water pot, same time of day, same amt. sun light, etc.) then time for water to boil would be longer??
thanks. So, bigger the lens, quicker it is to boil the water??
If it made you more compassionate as an adult, the frog served a good and honorable purpose. I went fishing at age 10, lake at an apartment complex in northern Virginia. We caught 3 catfish, put them in a bucket then decided to take them back to our camper. We thought they were dead and dumped them in a field. The next day they were still breathing. We took them back to the lake, too late. On the rare occasion I now go fishing I release ALL:-)
Nice video, as a solarman, and hiker/camper you need to get this out to the MSR and OR guys. This is a great idea for low impact camping. Less fuel to carry, no burning wood, and light weight. Truly a Low Impact Camping device.
To all the negative posters WTF Do you work directly for the oil companies or what . Maybe you have no clue as to how things work with no knowledge of construction , tools or common sense. Get this guys ,If he can boil water with a small lens that quickly, what could YOU do with a larger lens over time. See ohhhhhhhh Now you get it. People that would post negative comments about green energy are usually the same people I charge
Fresnel lens technology could be very important in Mars exploration and settlement - for both smelting metals/ceramic ores and for thermoelectric power perhaps (although simple reflector panel may be more effective).
Not a chance:-0 I picked up a shiny stainless steel bowl that was exposed for 20 seconds and got a 2 inch long x 1/8" wide blister. Looked like someone drew a line on my index finger. I thought it would not be hot as the far rim was all that was exposed and being reflective. ouch
Fantastic stuff. 1) Does this damage your eyes? 2) And does it give you an increased risk to skin cancer (say if you were to very (very) briefly expose your skin to it?
You cannot get exposed long enough as it would zap you. Skin damage is progressive from years of exposure or a very bad sunburn. This is a heat burn, even though it is from the sun, it is different. Eye protection is for the brightness damage. UV damage is not a risk because you are not in the direct path of the reflected light. Thank you for the comment. I usually cover completely up because of standing in the sun all day long. Sun block is a good idea and gogles for the light.
Magnets, however, can be heated to their Curie point and lose their attraction until cooled down below CP. I'd very much like to see how fast this can be done using a Fresnel lens, could you try this, please ?
If this happens as quickly as I expect, picture a movable ring with magnets, each one attracted, heated, next one attracted, heated, cooling down 'on their way back'.
Way back Tesla already had some such patent, without solar heating, though.
"...the ferromagnetic properties of a material can change for temperatures well below the Curie temperature. Neodymium magnets, for example, begin to lose their magnetization at temperatures as low as 300 F."
Tested the Neodymium in a Fresnel. They loose their magnetic properties after 15 seconds an recover slightly when cooled. They are MUCH WEAKER about 90%. The heat seems to cause permanent damage. They end up about as strong an old school magnet.
Nice.

If I put clear plastic on top, tilted a bit, could it made fresh water out of sea water?

No. You would have to desalinize the water, or some similar process by using reverse osmosis.
