  • I'm a left-handed person looking at purchasing this knife, and I have a question regarding the reversible clip. What specific size Allen wrench would I need to remove and re-insert the post holding it in? Also, what size would I need to tighten the screws in the handle? My current Gerber has a tightening problem that lead to me using Locktite to hold the grips and clip on.

  • @rc5213 Edit: Also, what type of screw holds the blade in? I've had issues with my Gerber with that coming loose as well.

  • rofl, use a fixed blade for cutting fish

  • At least your camera has auto focus.

  • Dude, just one thing - this knife is for self defense and killing, not for cleaning fish or other bullshits...anyone who wants to buy this knife DO NOT use it for fishing or peeling otherwise you will make unrecoverable damage.

  • i think you made a good point about the groove not cutting paracord well but i think that would be an ideal emergency feature in case of a car accident. just think, you drive and go off a bridge or are in a collision and you need out fast; your adrenaline will be so high and you will be so scared that you will be shaking and that is when you dont want to deploy a blade. too high of a risk for cutting yourself or your loved one when cutting the seat belt.

  • FYI: I have many SOG knives and I don't own one that didn't come with some side to side blade play but one model in particular has up and down play in most of them I have held and that is the Flash 2. DO NOT BUY A SOG FLASH 2, unless you don't mind a blade tang that doesn't seat properly against the blade stop. IMO this is unacceptable. I've been spending my money elsewhere lately.

  • gr8 review thx 4 the info

  • one question; This or recon 1 tanto?

  • @Sloane67665

The Tanto part is correct. But they didn't refer to mine as a "recon 1".

  • @BLUNTRUTH4U he is asking if you recmend the cold steel recon 1 tanto or the trident

  • @BLUNTRUTH4U

No, what he is saying is should he get a Cold Steel Recon 1 Tonto blade or a SOG Trident Tonto blade.

    Im getting both =]

  • @LilX40 lol, I already know it has been a typing mistake, don't worry, but in Spanish tonto blade means stupid, fool blade.

  • @BLUNTRUTH4U FYI, he was referring to the Recon 1 Tanto Knife and the Trident. Which one should he get?

  • @BLUNTRUTH4U he meant which is better: the sog trident tanto or the cold steel recon 1 tanto

  • @Sloane67665 If you want a stronger knife go and buy cold steel recon 1 (also longer blade.)But want an assisted opening knife get the trident.

  • @MrHALOCOUST I got my dad a recon 1 for father's day. Then i went a got myself the trident

  • I hate the twitch, the tip broke on me.

  • hey nutnfancy said sog dont have sharp blades out of the box what is ur opinion

  • This review was great. very helpful and informative.

  • You make some great points, thank you for sharing your thoughts on this knife! I especially like that you pointed out SOG's great job with the tanto. I am looking for a tanto blade with a good solid tip, this may be the one. Tempted to spend a little more (well, double) and go with an Emerson CQC7. Anyway, gonna check out part 2.

  • Nice review, man. I was actually trying to decide between the tanto and the clip-point and you really helped me out.

  • thanks for the review, i think this will be my next knife purchase. I was taking a look at this particular model last time i was at a local gun shop and I really liked it, especially because of the robust design and tanto blade. cheers

  • Have you ever handled a SOG Flash II ?

  • In a store I handled one. I also owned the Flash1 for a day, then returned it. I don't like the contour of the handle - that bulge in the middle. Both knives have that. I like the blades of those knives though. That's why the SOG Twitch2 is one of my favorites - same blade as the Flash1.

  • oh ya and do you use some kind of oil for the pivot so it would work smoother when tightened more ?

  • Yes. The first thing I do with all my new folders is wash out the factory oil and put in my Norvy high speed turbine oil. That stuff works great. The bottle is in the background of many of my table-top vids.

  • thats a natural oil write? i use something like sewing machine oil its natural non sintetic you know if i would have to eat something of the knife blade and the last thing i wona ask ,some oils do attrackt pocket lint more then others ,so what do you advise? some kind of better quality oil or just routine cleaning?

  • Yup. Norvey oil is paraffin based. Non-toxic and food safe if you don't drink the shit.

I recommend rountine cleaning AND keeping the joint oiled (on the knives you use). You don't have to take it apart to clean it. Just soak it in some warm water with dish soap, then rinse with hot water and oil the pivot.

If the pivot starts to feel "scratchy", then you should take it apart and clean it.

Sometimes I use a water-pick to help in cleaning.

  • thanks a lot for the wisdom :) you should do a vid about how to properly clean and maintain a knife for newbies.

  • ya had a little excident with a sog tanto specifecly sog xray vision the tip bent in like lead when i tried to push in to an old peace of painted wood i think it was oak that was disappointing.

  • That's surprizing. The X-ray Vision is better steel than the Trident. I beat the hell out of the tip of my Trident and my Vision (not X-ray, better ATS-34), never had any damage at all.

  • your macro shot is pretty excellent. no apologies necessary. great vids man. keep it up!

  • do you find that you have a little wiggle up and down on your SOG knives, I have some on my flash 2 and my trident

  • Yup, I've had maybe 4 or 5 spring-loaded SOGs. They all have play in all directions - not too bad vertically, though.

  • Thanks for the review, a lot better than the others. Because you said the tanto is stronger, I'm getting that one. The tip on my last knife broke off because it was too thin, made me very pissed. I want a tough blade.

My only advice to the other viewers is to use gun-oil on the Trident's pivot if you adjust the tightness of the blade. Every knife I have get's a health dose of gun oil, and they're flawless. As soon as I get the Trident, I'm gonna oil that.

  • Also, thanks for explaining that it's got a lot of complicated parts in the handle. That's something I didn't think of before.

Has your trident ever jammed because of all the intricate mechanisms?

    Great job!

  • Thanks for your compliments on both vids!

No, it hasn't "jammed" on me, but when it got blood in it, I couldn't simply wash it out ( to many cavities for the springs and things). Not good for food prep unless you are careful not to get crap in the handle.

  • I got my Trident last Thurs. I put it through a bunch of jobs and tests, and I love it.

It came lightly oiled, but I added extra in the pivot. The blade did wiggle from side to side, but no up/down play at all. Got the right size hexs for all the screws. Tightened the clip screw, which was purposely left loose in case you wanted to switch what side it was on. Adjusted the pivot until the side to side was min and it still opened by itself. I have handled a lot of knives, this one is the best.

  • You have to be crazy to turn this knife up because of the side-side play. I also love the tanto blade. I got a TiNi one, and it doesn't appear breakable. Very professional. Very cool.

Accordingly, the Trident was intented for military use. Soldiers in the AO often wear gloves, and you pointed out that this knife works great with gloves. I used to carry a Buck 110 FG as my EDC. This replaced that. It has so many pros, esp weight.

Thanks for your review, it REALLY made me decide to get this.

  • Glad you like it! I like mine, it gets lots of use in the winter.

Ya, big weight difference compared to the 110. I'm not really a big 110 fan, too heavy, slippery grip when wet, and no protection from going up on the blade (something important to me). And, yes, I did have and carry a 110.

  • Yeah. What sold me on the tanto blade was when you not only stabbed it into the hunk of wood, but then started prying it apart with the tip deeply embedded.

About a year ago, I broke off about 1/4in of the 3.75in Buck 110 blade while prying a shallow nail out of a piece of lumber. Man was I pissed. I got a dremel, and re-did the point, but the thing was never as good as when it was normal. Every since, I've been looking for something better, but couldn't find anything worth it, until the Tri.

  • thanks man

  • Very welcome!! Happy cutting!

  • i was watching this vid with my headphones on(not to bother my wife) next thing i know you put a glove on and start waving the knife up and down. my wife passing by glanced at the screen, paused a split second, i looked up and smiled, and she kept walking without making eye contact.

    hahahahha that moment was priceless

  • hey blunt do you like the Sog trident or the camillus heat better? also are smith and wesson knives any good?ive been wanting the SnW magic knife.

  • It's close, but I like the Trident better because of the tip strength, but the Heat is much more comfortable to use except for the pocket clip on it.

As for the S&W Magic and all other S&W knives. There good for one thing: giving away to people that don't know what a decent knife is. Don't waste your money, you can get a much better knife for the same money (or $5 more). Just my opinion.

  • I agree..had an S and W swat knife and the lock couldn't be closed without pliers.

  • Comment removed

  • The tanto version does look cool.

  • LOL, That IZULA is just part of my standard gear now, I'm so used to it. Again good job, and thanks.

I figured thats the only way you figured it out, I looked around and couldnt find anything about the insides of the blade. I also agree, I wish it didnt have the cord cut option, wish they made it without it.

  • This blade. Scary sharp out of the box, Mine is like yours... Sharper than what the company gave it. When I first got mine it felt a little light, I am used to weighty blades. I forget it's even there it's so light. Overall, I am very impressed with the trident. For wilderness stuff though... Nothing but Fixed blades.

Good job, very imformative. How did you find out about the insides?

BTW: Thanks for the Kudos. :)

  • Ya, I had to take it apart to clean out the blood. I'm picky about my knives functioning perfectly. DON'T TAKE YOURS APART! It was a bitch to get it back together, the most complicated insides I ever saw on a knife. That's why I never will gut anything with it again.

I, too, always take a fixed blade into the woods. But I also take a folder EVERYWHERE. And now the Izula, as well.
