It's a shame as this would have fit very nicely right before Darkness on side two of Ghost in the Machine. Too bad they never got to record it but it's definitely a quintessential Police song (just not a refined classic with the spirited input of Andy and Stewart.)
Thanks for these, I always thought the Brimestone and Treacle stuff was weird but these are out there too. There is a band called Grand National that used a Police sound and maybe some ideas from these tracks that were't released.
maybe i would dig it after the studio polish.. but at first listen.. it should be sold to dire straits. it's just unfair to judge these demos. these guys are tapped into something bigger than us all.. genius for all ages.
if you have read andy's autobio, stewart and he were a little suspicious about these demos, sting appeared in montserrat with a canadian keyboardist, and they puked at the intromission of the poor guy... so they discarded the demos
you can hear sting's jazz and fusion background here much more clearly than on other tracks of that era, i think. listening to this, it's no wonder that "TDOTBT" became what it was. very interesting to listen to!
the rare audio bits on youtube stem from a bootleg that has been around since the 80s, think the boot is called "ghost in the studio" (got it somewhere) and it features Stings sketches for songs that were worked over in the studio (AIR studio Montserrate) and turned into "Ghost in the machine". I agree with previous posters that the songdrafts are really good (at least to die hard police fans), but unfortionately they are made on Stings 4track and the sound is terrible..
I keep coming back to these rare old Police tracks on youtube. Now this one is becoming, like, my favourite song. I'm about to see them again in about 10 days. I think they must be tired of this uberlong tour by now! They should do these old ones live now so they don't keel over out of boredeom. I mean, think of it. They've got to be tired of Roxanne after 10 quadrillion times, right?
So getting back to his nose..I've only seen him up close (2-3 feet away) once and this was last year. I was surprised because his nose appeared a little crooked, like it veered a little to his left, I would say, kind of like right under the bump part. I was surprised because It never comes across like that on video or in photos. I mean, you can't touch up every video you're in, so that's what was surprising to me. He was still fine, though. But also not as tall as I had estimated.
I absolutely LOVE this tune. Its very sexy and warm. Makes me feel good. Why on earth did they ditch this gem? Thankyou POLICEchout. Just got back from the Perth Police Concert in Australia. They will always be my favourite band.
Thank you, Rune. I thought I was the only one that noticed his nose morphed sometime in 1984. I have heard his procedure was expidited by collossal Bowie-esque quantities of cocaine.
there are traces of "nothin' bout me" and "once upon a daydream" here. it's weird how much this is like grand national - guess those guys got the police/sting dynamics right
These song just feels like sex

Man.....they should have put that out. There's a couple of fillers on Ghost that could have easily been replaced with this cool song.....

you can hear the bassline from Secret Journey in this song, and some vocal phrasing that ended up in Soul Cages.

eerie but kind of magical ...def a police sound..sting voice is very clear to hear..cool.

ISounds like Sting locked himself into his hotel room and recorded the demo while high on coke & Human League.

There's a part in Police around the world where it sounds like Sting is noodling around on a piano with the beginnings of this song.
POLICEchout 2 years ago
Do you mean the scene where at the end of his noodling he slumps onto the keys and laughs a kookie sort of laugh and looks into the camera?

I can hear "Demolition man" in this song! Don't you?

this song is very 80's like. definitely would have fit in with syncronicity. i love it!

Just found this! "Once upon a daydream" has elements of this song in it.

Like the best Police songs, this is hypnotic and darkly sexy.

Listening to these it becomes obvious why he went solo... the demos don't always sound very Police.

this song could have been a massive hit! I prefer it to other songs from this band!

I love this one. It definitely should have been included on Ghost in the Machine.

akin to Invisible Sun in it's message.

Apropos of nothing whatsoever, Sting sort of looks like Canadian thespian Geraint Wyn Davies in this picture....

lol i'm not up on canadian thespians so i looked up his image on google...good call!

This is a good song but it's not a police song: there is no guitar!! It must be a sting'demo.

the bassline was used for Invisible sun. interesting, thanks for sharing this track.

is it true that the nasal cavity influences vocal pitch? just wondering.

Like (s)he's telling you. Led Zeppelin's lawyers are already working to sue him for plagiarizing How Many More Times...
OH, it was unconscious, Sting....Right....
2kl2klps 4 years ago
Led Zeppelin are the bigger plagiarists.
blackgargamel 4 years ago
Pray tell which particular tune 2kl2klps... you have me curious now...
firecoalman 4 years ago
How many more times is the title of the tune. It is the bass line and it is ultrafamous, so it's obviously unconscious.
By the way, I was joking about the lawyers.
