  • You know it's Judy when you can't see the dislike bar

  • John F. Kennedy must have been proud to get Judy to sing this tribute to him. I am amazed at how splendid her voice was in singing this.

  • ....completely speechless.

  • One word - instinct!

  • i sang this at my fathers funeral,he was born and raised in Detroit.RIP dad

  • I had chills the entire time :)

  • Hats off to the Queen! And I don't live in England :) Merry Christmas to all!

  • Wow......All I can say to this is....WOW. As far as I'm concerned, it's no exaggeration to call Judy Garland one of the top 5 entertainers of all time. I have never seen this until today, and it brought tears to my eyes, just blew me away...WOW!!!

  • what voice- Judy was truly a magnificant performer and will never be forgotten for the performances she gave. This has really made my day <3

  • Dont use this word to much........Absolutely flawless

  • @informatist When the word of "republic" is sang, it does not mean the Republican party at all.

  • @bumphump20 It means ALL OF US! Merry Christmas!

  • I have listened to this so many times. Maybe you had to live through it but Judy pulled out all the stops for this one.

  • All Judy needs is "Mine eyes have seen the glory, of the coming of the Lord..." to warm up, then she just lets the audience have it...

  • It was a sad time. Judy's angelic voice came to the rescue.

  • Love this!! Wish they did not cut out the part where she said "this is for your Jack"

  • the emotion portrayed by her voice and facial reaction is chilling a amazing performance ???xxx rip xxxx

  • Raw, intense, passionate performance. Stunning voice, stunning woman.

  • There will never be anyone like her.

  • Epic.

  • this made me cry like a baby. only judy garland could sing this to such a touching degree.

  • I think she looks glamorous here, considering what she looked like 5 years earlier

  • It's so tragic what happened with her life. If only she were in this generation. No one would care about what she looked like with a voice like that. At least, I wouldn't. I wouldn't have then, and I don't now. It's about the music, not the looks.

  • 2 thumbs up to her....RIP Judy

  • She sounds great here, but looks so thin. Drugs were already taking their toil on her.

  • thanks for posting.

  • Garland's stormy powerful & passionate "Battle Hymn of the Republic" show the blazing genius of the legendary icon in a brilliant moment where every fiber of her being is to the depths of the song in a way never experienced before or after from any singer...looking in to her eyes during this magnificent stunning tour-de-force of a performance is something one never forgets...Bravo Judy!

  • this must be one of the best performances in television history amazing

  • this must be one of the best performances in television history amazing

  • AMEN!

  • I played this for a friend of mine and she swelled up and had a goose bump attack!!! She Tor this song up!!! I cry every time I see it she knew how to live every song she gave to us!!!!!!! I know GOD smiled the night she sang it!!! I will love you always Rest in Peace Judy! Love Barbara...

  • omg that is one hell of a performance

  • Oh, when singers just had to sing to be famous, no sideshow gimmicks, no special effects, no voice enhancers, just real talent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I gave it a big thumbs up, and added it to my holiday favorites play list.

  • Comment removed

  • This is one of those moments that, no matter your general apathy, no matter your distaste for American culture or Christianity, will absolutely move you.

  • @KurosenvsGrither I agree. People who hate Christanity and American culture, the good part I mean are stupid

  • Fucking spectacular.

  • My hair stud up when I heard this for the first time !!!! Life has never been the same since you have gone may you rest in peace for ever!!!! OH and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!

  • brings me to tears. Todays celebs dont have this type of patriotism sadly. She defied the odds, did it, and its still remembered as 1 of the greatest moments in tv....try that now and see what would happen.

  • OMG this makes every hair on my body stand on end what a iconic legend this amazing women was ...... fantastic

  • My "friends of Dorothy" ... She is just wonderful!

  • I bet those CBS executives felt dumb when they told her people wont remember who JFK (the president of the country) was

  • You know, as good a friend as she was to JFK, I'm surprised she didn't break out sobbing during the song. It was really quite brave of her to sing that incredible song just three weeks after his death. Just to make it through the song without bursting into tears must have been a huge accomplishment for her. They were very close friends. I remember the exact moment when I heard he died, and the exact moment when I heard she died. Now, whenever I hear this song, I think of them both.

  • Spectacular !!! Judy Garland had more talent in her tiny pinky finger than most any one else I've ever known in entertainment. She is truly a legend that will forever be remembered & really set the bar for fine performing. Judy you'll always be my idol , Somewhere over the Rainbow is my all-time favorite song & brings tears to my eyes everytime. <3 With love for you always Judy :)

  • A document in pain and defiance.

  • @nexusofpower your right nexus.. she was a beautiful, brave, strong woman to sing that just weeks after jfk's death, that wasnt even done when ronald reagan died which it should have been. shows you how screwed up this country has become over the yrs thanks to the libs, political correctness. she sang from her heart god bless her...oops1 cant even say god anymore. oh well, i'll do it anyway!

  • Try singing that now, it woulda been cut from tv by the bs liberal censors and alot of people would not have given it a standing ovation, but sadly boo's.

  • @thecolaratlady not neccesarily. moments like 9/11 and such moments have called to play such a song. i truly dont believe it would get the boo's u seem to be implying.

  • Those who truly appreciate the talent of this awesome great preformertype cast her as fantastic not just Jud but Judy the great as I always say. It is unfortunate. The world on a whole some exclusion appy always see her as Dorothy, wow what they havea totally missed. I would also like to say passion does not always imply sweet. A true pasiionate singer is well beyond sounding seet or powerful. A true preformer feel the moment. Damn couls ythis women fell any moment.

  • What does it mean the "close to show number 16" Man this is great, too bad she is typecast as Dorothy. I love her in Meet me in Saint Louis. Never really liked Wizard of Oz though.

  • They were not happy at CBS when she INSISTED on singing this in tribute to President Kennedy. and it is true that her preface to the song was "This is for you, Jack!" but it was cut!

  • why isn't this the national anthem of the US? it should be!

  • odds are since it says "the coming of the lord"

  • @PresidentDRCI Because it's a secular republic. In theory.

  • @kosmodog14 in which country?

  • there will never be another Judy and the emotion that she inspired. God bless her.

  • Love her performance, but it's ironic that a hymn for a republic should reference God :P

  • incomparable

  • i get chills even more when she sings "as he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free" DAMN! I Love Judy Garland.

  • I love you judy!!!

  • I wish Hollywood were like this today...

  • @mck718 I couldn't agree with you more

  • @nyboxers73 Me 2, but with the libtards in Hollywood, this will never happen. Unfortunate.

  • @nyboxers73 this may explain why: w w w . d e s t r o y h o l l y w o o d . t k

  • @nyboxers73 Amen to that....

  • @mck718 Its not? I love Judy Garland. But Hollywood is pretty much the same. Strung out or hungover...actors and actress are still the same. A bit different back then but in the grand scope of things...still the same. To much fame to much money and apparently not enough to do. Always ends up the same...a tragic untimely death of someone.

  • @hockeyham3 I was speaking in regards to the patriotism and sense of country and fellow men...mainstream America is hungover and strung out...that's not what I meant.

  • @mck718 Agreed.

  • These shows are from before I was even born and I think they are amazing! Too much crap on tv today. I miss the days of tv being bland and inoffensive!!! LOL

  • @jennangel122397 Me too! I was -18 years old when she sang this :). I prefer Lucy, Judy, Carol, etc to most anything today...in total agreement with you!

  • @mck718 Yeah. Talent is obsolete.

  • @mck718 Hollyweird is a lost cause

  • The best 4:50 seconds of my life seeing he sing!!!!!

  • The voice of a Goddess.

  • In all of her performances she put so much emotion into it, not many people are able to open up so wilingly on stage

  • This is the passion that used to be put into every artist's work. Now it's all just a show for money instead of a performance to get a message across through song and a pure love of what they do. Musicians never know how much money they will make at their job. They may become poor or rich. The musicians back then contiued with their passion once they became rich, whereas now it's just a show for nothing but money to go out and spend on drugs... disgusting

  • You know, I heard that Judy Garland often was very self-concious about her appearance and believed she was unattractive. All I have to say to that is... BULLSHIT! I wish I could go back in time and just tell this woman how beautiful she is!

  • @ManticoreFire Haahah I know right?? I actually always thought that Judy was ahead of her time when it came to her beauty. I mean, when she was young, there was something striking about her that I don't see in any of the stars of her time. If she laid of the drugs and alcohol she probably would've grown up to be a stunning woman. That being said, she looked so great during her tv show, imo. Here, her dress is a great color, it probably looked amazing in person.

  • Judy before this number said "This is for YOU,Jack" but CBS cut that part out saying it was "Too Political". Fools!

  • @NFitalianGuy I agree CBS was foolish to cut that out.

  • It's so good to see someone with pure Charisma, she is so good, all she needs is a stage,,,,,no big stage show, just a small woman with a big voice....

  • how could anyone dislike this...

  • @CamramanidiotCIA ..So true....Such feeling...Tremendous voice-performer

  • "he died to make men holy, so lets die to make men free"

  • @ryanrule2 thats the most moving line in the song.

  • This is very appropriate today, remembering the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King and Praying that the reign of terror of the tea party movement ends, so all Americans can live in peace, prosperity and brotherhood/sisterhood again. Amen

  • @TheCBGBoy What in lords name does the Tea Party have to do with your living in happiness...3/4 of your post was perfect... The Tea party statement..REDICULOUS..

  • I didn't think anyone could sing it as good as Elvis...I was wrong!!! She and her voice are stunning!!

  • one of the most honest renditions.

  • I could watch this 1000 times and still get chills.

  • @noelkristi My God I too had chills. I am gald I am not the only one.

  • Our Judy...she meant every word....

  • What a woman

  • great just great 10/10, say no more.

  • every time i see her i think of how strong she was and how she never faltered in the public eye. such a strong woman! my hero <3

but you can sort of see the wear and tear of her life a tad here, like, in her persona, you know? she's so strong but so fragile and her HUGE personality is, like, shaking her frame, but she's still holding it together. that's judy for you! love her!

  • stunning.

  • Judy Garland, beautiful, passion, and a voice of an angel!

    simply beautiful.

  • My God. There are tears pouring down her face. Every word hurt for her. What a consummate professional and in spite of that in her delivery we see the genius of the artist that she was. Such a courageous performance that matched the song perfectly.

A never to be forgotten moment in history that we are so fortunate to be able to see this.

  • the idiots who ran cbs didn't want her to do it, feeling that three whole weeks after the assassination, the American people wanted to move on, forget and get back to important things like the beverly hillbillies; but this great artist knew exactly what she was doing, and what people needed to hear at that terrible time-- and you can see that by the standing ovation she got from that lucky audience.

  • 2.59 - 3.12 just gave me goosebumps

  • i am from uk, but judy garland man i wish i could go back to the MGM days even to sweep the floors .great just great.

  • Amazing to see what happens when an artist includes passion in what they are doing.

  • Dam! all I can say is Dam! Can you imagine sitting home watching this performance after the assignation of the President. Dam, how moving!

  • oh my god! the raw emotions in her voice and face r evident and so strong! this was amazing!

  • This is lovely. I own the gown that Miss Garland wore that night.......

  • @charleswtriplett WHAT!? the exact one? that's so cool I love her, i'd love to have a piece of something Judy Garland. what a legend

  • @f0ll0wtheleader Yes, I have the gown she wore that night. You can see it if you do a search for Judy Garland costumes. My website will come up and you see color photos of the gown. It's bright ruby red by the way......

  • what was cut by cbs was her comment just before starting the song she said simply" this is for you Jack"

  • - moved to tears

  • this was also the last song at Judy's funeral.

  • inspiring..

  • Judy Rocks!!

  • @carpentirr

she sure does, and i'm sure she'd be thrilled to hear that from you! great artists never go out of style, not the real greats--

  • Another incomparable talent and human gone far too soon. This woman gave everything she had always.

  • This is truly Judy at her best. Full of emotion, and at the top of her game vocally. Just gives me goosebumps. Even today, 41 years after her passing, her legend lives on.

  • I'm only 30, but feel I've grown up with artists like Judy, Fred, Tony, Sammy...etc. I teared up watching this...

  • wonderful, wonderful. but where is the definitive version of "just in time", which includes commentary from melissa manchester? it is a peerless performance of stunning vocal control, rare psychological nuance, and pure dramatic wallop. judy is simply the best. can someone bring it back to youtube?

    thanks again.

  • Judy and Jack Kennedy were very close friends, this is a perfect tribute to a visionary President.

  • You can feel how completely and utterly outraged she is. And so sad. She was such a beautiful being.

  • What an amazing performance. Every emotion she lived is displayed in this song. Hope the younger generation learn to appreciate this "once in a lifetime performer". Thanks for posting.

  • BRAVO!!!!

  • No kidding this was major...she was fab...Olivia

  • Too much gift to hold back. Too much raw passion to contain. When Judy Garland is in top voice and inspired, the walls of Jericho cannot stand firm.

  • Too much gift to hold back. Too much raw passion to contain. When Judy Garland in top voice and inspired, the walls of Jericho cannot stand firm.

  • @BTURNER1961 Well said! Judy when even in poor voice in later years fed off her audiences and in the end her voice would miraculously return with full vigor! Her she was perfect! I bet President JFK was looking down and smiling.! She was a huge fan of his and he was a huge fan of hers too! I bet Jackie was in tears when she seen this tribute!

  • @BTURNER1961 what a beautiful description

  • Which 6 bastards disliked this?

  • @MissMiffed If you find out who they are, let me know!!

  • she is gone but JUDY is 300 million times better than JUSTIN/B.

  • why has this been kept from me for so long? I`d be mad but I`m captivated...this is the sort of thing that needs to be shared

  • @scallywag86 My sentiments precisely the first time I came upon it.

  • let us die to make men free..... still doing it...

  • 6 people definitely missed the like button. I love Judy! She is so powerful with this song

  • Judy looked right into the camera and said, "This is for YOU, Jack" before she sand this incredible song. The powers that be at CBS cut it because it was "too political". I think it would have added even more power since the nation was still reeling from the death of The President of the United States.. What a performance!

  • @NFitalianGuy Indeed.

  • What an amazing, almost surreal performance. No one can touch Judy's version, not Whitney Houston or even Streisand.

  • Her voice got thicker and richer with age. It adds a different tone.

  • @jinnybunny age and marlboros, that is.

  • @jinnybunny, Yes, her singing voice wasn't as sweet as it was when she was younger, but still a nice singing voice for her age.

  • @saolili i think her voice here was still at its peak

  • I can't...

    I have no words...beautiful.

    Goosebumps everywhere.

  • She had not only lost her president but also a very dear friend the week she sang this in tribute to JFK.

  • She sang it like she meant it.

  • "As He dies to make men Holy, let us die to make men free," Powerful line. Judy shudders when she sings this.

  • she seems very uncomfortable singing this song..but lovely all the same

  • @squeaky00 probaby because she was trying not too cry.

  • @squeaky00

Just her style. This was a time of heavy emotion in this country. I can't think of another way to put it. It still brings tears to my eyes. I remember the announcement about JFK while in my last class of the day in high school. Time difference from Dallas. This is Judy at her best.

  • I never get tired of this clip.

  • does any1 else get goosebumps soon as 2:13 comes in with the backround hymm? God knows I do

  • She does it with style and emotion. Like only she can.

  • Couldn't you just watch and listen to Judy forever?

  • @peeje852 most definatelyy!!

  • It's hard to recapture the mood when the president was assassinated, we all were in a state of disbelief

  • Magnificent performance moved me deeply as a teen watching this incredible singer who is the greatest ever yet so human & full of geniune emotion...listening to the quailty of Judy's gorgeous voice and watching those soulful eyes at the same time is a stunning experience one never forgets...Bravo Judy, you are loved and missed!

  • god bless two wonderful people!! the greatest singer of all time and the Greatest president! !!!!!!!

  • One of the greatest versions of this song sung by one of the greatest voices in recorded history.

  • I fear that we shall not see her like again.

  • i love Judy Garland! She's soooo awesome, well, was. Her music will forever remain is, absolutely timeless!!!!!!

  • 2:59 i'm bawling

  • A true legend-Judy I salute you

  • 47 years later watching this still gives me goosebumps.

  • I remember viewing this on TV those many years ago and wondered if it were available. So glad it was. This old man (I'm 71) was thrilled again today.

  • The lyrics to this song are truly inspiring. If you are an American and this song doesn't bring a tear to your eye you are living in the wrong country. Judy Garland puts her heart and soul into this performance. She is a Goddess.

  • @carpentirr I'm not American, and this songs brings a tear on my eye. What THAT means?

  • @CupcakeMoonster

It could mean you cherish freedom..

  • i heard executives told her not to mention Jack Kennedy cause weeks later, when the ep airs, no one will remember JFK. Well they were wrong for not only have we not forgotten JFK but we haven't forgotten FG or JG.

  • I just keep watching it again and again and again....

  • This made me cry.

  • This gives me chills. Her voice is so beautiful, and it has so much meaning and feelings in it

  • yes AdArmand.......she truly was....a vocal genius......the like of which the world will never see again.....I love the fact that grown middle aged men would stand and cry when Judy sang...not gay guys....married middle aged american men would stand and cry when Judy sang !!......I think that speaks volumes about her voice....and her voice still shakes me to the core.....
