  • You have a circle of fifths as your background. :-D

  • hey do u peeps see that frequency control 0.00 is there a way u can hav it recorded!!u know like the way we hav any controller movements recorded pliiis halp!!! same goes to the matrix modulation table

  • when he first said sounds like this, I farted

  • You copied a video!!!

  • GREAT tutorial! Very very very helpful!

  • You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

  • It's nice to see a tutorial made by someone who knows what he's doing and explains how things work. Thank you.

  • thats one of the best tutorials ive seen in a looooong time

  • sytrus is a fucking beast, thanks for shining some light on fm syntheses!

  • Kind of a noob question, but how do you make Sytrus start out with just a basic sine wave instead of the orchestra?

  • @EdwardSapp I don't know how to make it start like that, but you can go to the presets menu and select the preset 'Default' to reset everything.

  • So helpful! Thanks!

  • a sphincter

  • Nice vid! Check mine to get some hip hop samples!

  • Thanks for this. Very helpful.

  • What's that circle in the background? My guitar teacher used to show me that

  • @2theothers2 That's the circle of fifths. AKA circle of fourths. The reason I think it's important is two-fold. It shows all the notes and shows how chords typically move in songs. Besides that it indirectly describes how key signatures work. Learn about it but don't expect to ever refer to it in your professional career.

  • This is the best tutorial on Sytrus and FM synthesis I have found so far. Well done!

  • I might sound stupid but how do i get sound to come out? i have it all set up but can't find a play button anywhere...

  • You are amazing, i love you. Can we have gaybies?

  • Excellent and very clear explanation - good idea recording the waveform in edison. Thanks for posting!

  • Wow thank you so much man, this really helped me out a lot.

  • Comment removed

  • Do you know that your name sounds like A Sphincter?

  • This is one of the best FM / RM Synthesis tutorials i've ever seen... the only thing I could tell you... to explain visually the FM synthesis.. you could also use a SPECTOGRAM (wavecandy).. it'll show it better

  • so....240p, we meet again

  • howd u connect edison to sytrus??

  • @sydebewbzgigity he didnt .He just pressed record on edison then played a note from sytrus then

  • great video, great teacher, big the fuck up.

  • AcePincter says what?

  • that was awesome thank u!

  • Thank you so much. You are a very good teacher :D

  • Thank you AcePinteeeeeer!

  • Man, Thank you sooo much. This is the only understandable tutorial on FM Synthesis.

    X)X)

  • 2:44 looks like this... sounds like ******

  • 5:28

    PACMAN!!!!!!!

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH!

  • i liked it when you insulted your viewer's intellect by insisting it should be easy to understand 5 stars!~!

  • Wonderful, nice explanation!

  • I get this, but I'm very annoyed of Sytrus loading up with some random pad-preset -.- I don't get how to get to a clean sinewave...

  • @Godisen007 You should load a preset called DEFAULT ... it the first one in the list and you probably think it's not a preset but it is! :D Have fun!

  • @fatnindja Thanks, found it and did some nice synths using this technique, but I don't know how to change the speed of the modulation.. I just think he could've explained what he was doing a bit more detailed :O

  • i've been searching for any video to explain how the operator is working, realy thanks to you

  • Good demonstration, very straightforward and easy to understand. Almost makes it look too easy.

  • yes! I understand! lol

  • Ok great.... now show me how to make an FM blueman bass =]

  • Excellent video! Thanks!

  • 2:47

    sounds like *beeep*

    lol

  • thanks

  • Great help in understanding sythesis, thank you!

  • ok buddy there are a 100 videos that tell you how to use sytrus to make a basic sound. but give no explanation to how you do it. This video shows how the program acutaly works and what you are doing to the sound. thank you please make more videos i think everyone needs to learn how the program sytrus works not what you can do with it.

  • cool study in fm, i thought this wasn't quite fm synthesis though, i thought fm synthesis is where u combine waves (eg. a sine and a saw) at the same pitch to create a new waveform from the interference pattern of the two original waves. I though this was just using waves to modulate parameters on a synth (eg. volume and pitch). Didn't know that about the value of the slopes tho good info cheers

  • lol if someone dislikes this vid its just because they are too mad at themselves for not being able to comprehend things they shouldn't be meddling with anyways. keep on doing what you're doing man this was probably the best tutorial i've seen ...ever.

  • This is one of the most clear, concise, well-presented tutorials I've ever seen. I started watching this with NO idea how FM synthesis works and took away, if nothing else, a rock-solid baseline of knowledge to move forward from. Thank you so much.

  • where to get a cheap hardware synth? It can be crappy, I just want to go and turn some knobs and make some crappy sounds.

  • Yeee, a new way to swimming in the music's world.

PLEASE, TELL ME, WHAT DO YOU THINK, WHICH PRORAM IS THE BEST FOR FM SYNTHESIS ???

  • @DomeArmin Of course there is no best.. It's whatever that sounds the best and is the easiest to use for you.

  • @FaintingmAchine I found an other tutorial from a NATIVE software production (I remember FM8), it was really interesting, as a real tone-generator. I think you can check it too, because that is an other way in FM.

  • @DomeArmin Of course there is no best. It's whatever that sounds the best to you and is the easiest to use for you. When people hear your song, not many people are going to wonder which synthesizer you used.

  • hey scientist thanks for vid. So which frequency exactly is the most pleasing to most ears?

  • thank you so much... i really had no clue how to work sytrus.

  • Very clear, good, and undesteandable. Thank you!

  • I don't understand a word your saying fu.

  • how do u create a a string, bass, flute, brass sounds in sytrus? this tut is not useful

  • Ace Pincter! You are awesome!

But one bad thing: you make not enough tutorials, make every day 6, please!

  • at 2:45: sounds like "beeeep" =D

  • very informative video. thanks!

  • It's so helpful and I haven't even finished watching!!!!

  • Thank u very much for that, i learned heaps!

  • Lol. I thought you were saying "A Sphincter" and then I saw your name "AcePincter". Thanks for the video.

  • Thanks, bro.

  • This is way too blurry.

  • Where do i lovate sytrus? i cant find it in my frootyloops

  • Really good tutorial. You sound like james franco.

  • ace pincter... a sphincter?

  • I want your meat ace!

  • Some FM synthesis does rely on the instantaneous voltage of the modulating waveform to control the frequency, not just whether the voltage is increasing or decreasing.

  • Need to reupload in higher quality, cant read some of the things

  • Helped me a lot, thank you.

  • Thank you! That was very useful!

  • Alright... now how do I use FM in a way that's musically interesting, lol... I don't want my pitch swingin all over the place

  • Amazing tutorial!

  • Did u invent FL Studio or somethin? Did u go to Fruity Loops Academy or some sh*t like that? How do u know what every knob and button does?

I have learned something from every tutorial that u posted. Keep em' comin

  • @kcking33 i wanna go to Fruity Loops Academy rofl

  • this is brilliant cheers!

  • uh how do you put it in the song

  • Alright Ace, I learned something here with it only taking slope values. Is this the case for all FM synthesizers, and if so what is the reason for it?

  • you might possibly be one of the smartest guys on youtube

    best tutorial evar

  • Its helpful in a way. But Im 100% unfamiliar with the software nor know the purpose of it.. so im still a sitting duck.

  • wish there was a great tutorial like this for logic synths

  • I´m happy that I understand to 3xOSC

Now I can be more happy that I understand to sytrus!

    Thanks a lot

  • This is what the internet was made for helping people out. Thank you very much my friend.

  • @SuperMorto1 The internet was made for people to troll.

  • @SuperMorto1 Yes! that, and porn

(which i guess you could consider as helping lonely people out :D)

  • AHHH thank you so much.

    NOW i get it.

  • wow, this probably helped a lot of ppl. This stuff isnt intuitive at first. I used to spend a lot of time figuring out sytrus by myself. It would have been so much easier had i seen this video. Thanks

  • AcePincter your accent is interesting.. it doesn't sound british'sh.. sounds different from what i've heard before ( like say, your prime minister's accent )

  • Sounds north american to me.

  • Thanks DJ Sphincter!

  • very interesting stuff. I've always been pretty baffled by Sytrus

  • awesome. thanks for posting this.

  • Very nicely articulated!

  • were do u find edison i cannot find it

  • wow, you helped a lot.

  • good video, makes sytrus a lot easier to understand.

  • ok looks like i got it to be set somehow, Edison (sytrus) but now how do i set this edison thing to show the wave form, looks like its set on some spectrum thing?? thanks if you can help, thanks for the tutorial too

  • go to the mixer and add edison to the master mixer channel

  • how did you have that edison thing that shows the wave form thingy, and make it show what is being played from your sytrus?? i cant follow this tutorial until i know how to connect that thing with sytrus somehow. i would appreciate it if someone can tell me , only way i can get that eddison thing to appear is using the sampler which doesnt work since its for the sampler, hehe.

  • yo ace ur gonna LAUGH when im done with this video . search up "DJ AZ Alwayz - Shudder Flix" to give u an idea of what im about to do TO YOU muhhaha!!!

  • i thought you said "a spincter" like th part o you digestive tract

  • i just want something that i can use to record on a track using the keys of a keyboard if you get me.. what do i use for that???

  • Much thanks for clearing this up. I've been staring at Sytrus for years with no understanding. GRACIAS!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • It's edison

  • You should take that British guy's job. Thanks.

  • Sounds like *bleep*

  • bwahah

  • Lol, yeah, that was funny

  • OH. MAN. That was awesome!! Thanks for breaking that down for us!

  • awesome! clear description, should work wonders!

  • instead of showing the oscilator editor you should have addressed the waveshaper in the filters. it's a lot easier to work with than the oscillators to change the shape of the wavesine...at least in my opinion it is. still never the less this is a great tutorial. it helped me get a jump start on using this synthesizer back when i first got it. so thank you for uploading :)

  • thankz

  • Great video.. but i have one question... i hav created a beat using this and i am finding it hard recording the key i hav chosen on the keyboard... any answers on how i go about doing this?

  • Great video! Great explaining! Keep up the good work!

  • Amplitude Modulation =/= Ring Modulation.

It outputs the sum and difference of the frequency; Amp mod would be like a tremolo effect.

  • you are clear man!

    good vid ;)

  • Hey thanks man. Good stuff.

  • great vid man i learned a lot

  • So i have watched allot of sytrus tutorials and i must say this is the best. you present the information very clear and easy to follow.

Great work, i will defiantly be checking out more of your videos! GREAT JOB!

  • I was in the USMC 4 years. Had to learn how to present myself everyday. :)

  • @AcePincter I was in for 5, got out about 4 months ago. Started using FL in afghanistan on the down times and wrote some pretty crappy stuff but. I like the tutorials, you make it seems all to easy friend.

  • great video, way better than expertvillage's bullshit

  • Thanks MR. S. Are you a genius?

I take that back, Im bad a math. lol

  • Well the concept doesn't seem to be so difficult to understand but the interface of the Synth itself is quite more complex than any other subtractive synth. That's why I think most of the people (including myself) have more difficulties when it comes to make sounds from 0. On a subtractive synth seems more logical, you have an oscillator (or more) and from there you shape the sound.

Good tutorial, it gave me a general idea of how sytrus works thx mate :)

  • Ok, I have a question. Is it possible to automate the matrix? At the moment, I know you can auotmate the volume of the operator you want to bring in, but I don't know if you can do it with the matrix :/

  • As far as I know the matrix can't be automated. Unfortunately.

Please correct me if I'm wrong! :D

  • You can't automate the matrix, but you can automate the modulation! Either automate the amplitude(volume) of the modulation OP or add a MOD envelope to the modulated OP and automate the sustain(that is.. make it AS envelope)

  • That's a shame :(

  • you know your stuff man ! that was awesome, so clear. at last someone knows what they are talking about!

Thanks for this great insight and happy New Year mate

  • All the modulations act basically like LFOs, with the exception that they can be faster :D In the FM case, the attribute being modulated is the pitch and RM - volume. See? Not complicated at all.. That's why learning the 3xosc is a good start, because you get a basic understanding of "modulation", "oscillation" and "filtering". I started using Sytrus very easily after completely understanding 3xOsc. And yeah... you can make EVERYTHING with Sytrys.. dunno why most people hate it :S

  • Exactly right. I think the reason people are mystified is that it's very difficult to conceptualize the sound you are going to get - FM synthesis adds complexity in surprising ways.

It's as though we want to "pre-hear" our sounds as we create them. Don't you agree?

  • Got that right! ;) To be honest.. when I try making patches with Sytrus, I have no idea what sound I'm going to get :D And every time I try to make something I expect, I get a totally different thing ^^ I just love messing around with Sytrus :D

  • @AcePincter Actually, FM is about as easy for me to conceptualize or "pre-hear" as a low-pass filter, even though it's adding complexity to the wave rather than removing it. It's a lot harder to imagine what additive synths, hand-drawn waveforms or inverse FFTs will sound like...

  • does sytrus have a multy point envelope/performer lfo like ni massive, if not.. that means it cant do every thing

  • @bamboohaaa cuz it looks quite complicated in the beginning and you really have to know what you're doing to get some decent sound out of it...

  • do u think sytrus is worth the cash? and you should be on the

FL website . i understand u alot more than the other ppl doing there videos

  • Makes much more sense now thanks

    good job

  • plus their FM is actually phase mod???

  • isnt it amp modulation, not ring mod?

  • yeah, same thing

  • @AcePincter

Ring modulation is the multiplication of two bipolar audio signals by each other. Amplitude modulation is similar to ring modulation, except it works with a unipolar modulator.

  • @AcePincter

I'm not trying to be an ass, and I'm sorry if this has already been pointed out, but amplitude modulation and ring modulation are very different things. Ring modulation outputs the sum and difference of the frequencies of the carrier and modulator. What you're doing in this video is amplitude modulation, not ring modulation.

  • @zenocomplex So you're saying that the Sytrus developers got it wrong?

  • @EXetoC Not exactly wrong, but not exactly right either. At high modulation frequencies, the effect of AM is the same as RM. The algorithm by which true RM operates, however, cannot be produced with AM alone.

Often, however, RM effects are achieved through use of AM. I was just pointing out a little technicality; I'm not trying to say that anyone is absolutely wrong.

  • this sure helps as a step up from 3xosc, nice vid, thanks man

  • 听不懂英语!

  • Spasibo from Russia

  • I knew a lot about FM Synthesis, and I forgot a lot about FM Synthesis. You helped me remember everything! :-D Thanks man!

  • Now i watched this awesome tutorial again i noticed that thing at 2:49

"Looks like this, sounds like BEEP this. LOL

THat a sside, great tutorial. I think i commented already some time ago but still...

  • Wow, thanks a lot! The FL Studio help manual did nothing to help me understand FM synthesis, it just said two waveforms combine "magically" to produce a new sound. Using Edison to visually display the waveforms was just genius. And after using the 3xOsc Amplitude Modulation function, I was wondering what would be the Sytrus equivalent, but now I know that AM and RM are the same. Thanks!

  • Amplitude and ring modulation are not the same(although they are related). Amplitude modulation just modulates the loudness of the wave. Ring modulation multiplies 2 signals resulting in frequencies that equal the sum of the signals and the difference of the signals.

  • You made me understand fm synthesis in under 10 mins! You're my hero!

That's not sarcasim btw. I really do appreciate your tutorials.

    Thanks man!

  • good clear and very helpful tut !
