Charles McPearson,Pepper Adams,Bernard 'Pretty' Purdie,The Condoli Brothers.Great arrangement part of the out chorus they play part of John Coltrane's original solo.Paul Moen plays a nice solo and what can you say about the old man, Lionel Hampton can solo on any tune. This should have a touring band for Lionel. Not just a one time thing.
The sign in the background at the end says 1988 instead of 78, the Buddy Rich Big Band was the featured band in 78. What a show that would have been if both of the great bands were there together.
@stevebul Hi Steve, It is indeed 1978, the date seen at the end is for the next item on my video tape(I wasn't quick enough to edit it off). If you read my note to the download you will see why I am so sure. Keep swingin'. Jim.
I have seen Lionel Hampton and his band way back in the 50's in Frankfurt am Main Germany when I was very young. What an experience! Lionel got that excited that he jumped up on the bong drums. If there had been more space on these drums, I bet the entire audience would have jumped with him. A wonderful man and musician whom I remember fondly.
@JAZZWOLF33 Bong drums? Those old jazz dopers would use anything to get high, lol... Great band, definitely Arnett Cobb on tenor 'cos he's propped up on his crutches.
That's my old boss David 'Panama' Francis on drums. Looks like Arnette Cobb on tenor, Pepper Adams on bari, Charles McPherson on alto. Gates stayed musically up to date!

Whether with a big or small group Hamp gives it that extra swing. Saw him in Manchester, memorable.
