Wow, I havent seen this since it was shown in danish TV in 1978. I was 14 and completely stunned. It made me start play guitar, though I never leaned to play flamenco. Its still a wonderful gem.
@themosmitsos yes, Rondeñas with s at end is a kind of almost folk/flamenco style from Ronda and is a little similar to fandangos but this piece here is Rondeña and it is profoundly flamenco and dark and more similar to the mining lament called Tarantas
i have a new found respect for acoustic. an this is normally coming from a metal head who only plays with a pick an distortion always on.......... but this was just beautiful
@TomasJimenezGuitar Actually not long after I said that, I saw Paco play his stunning new tour Flamenco sin Fronteras ! If you get the chance, do not miss the opportunity to see Paco weave Spanish and Latin American music in a spectacular way.
That is a good guitar for his playing style. Since it's an unusual wood for traditional flamenco(cypress, sycamore) it produces distinct sweet warm tone, complementary to his playing..
I discovered Paco Pena here on YouTube 1 or 2 years ago. He has changed me. I listen to all of these gems over and over again. He is a Living Treasure. All of the Masters are just that, masters. For me, Paco is my favorite by far.
Another thing i've noticed about paco pena is that he holds himself very firmly and pays very close attention to his technique unlike other guitarist that make facial expressions and act more like i'm here playing.
The reason he doesn't compose as much as other guitarist is because he likes to keep the art genuine, just take a look at his posture he still plays like the very first guitarist that started the flamenco music.
His sound it's the best sound out of all the guitarists. He is the best no doubt!, the only thing is that he doesn't compose as much as other guitarist do.
By the way Paul Magnussen it is good to se you have time to make the helpful information here. I have not seen your name around since the old George Clinton/ Guitar International/ Spanish Guitar Centre (Leicester Sq) days so good to see you are still very much active in flamenco.
The Rondeña is indeed considered Flamenco, and the form it's played in today was invented by Ramón Montoya (d. 1949), and recorded by him in 1936. The distinctive tuning (DADF#AD) was also invented by Montoya. All other versions, including Sabicas's, Paco Peña's and Lucía's, derive from Montoya.

That phrase is three or four hundred years old and comes from traditional, non-flamenco, Spanish chamber music. It was transcribed by García Lorca in the early 1900s and recorded by Paco de Lucía in the '60s.
I think my favourite thing about paco pena is that he is not an arrogant player. He feels his music as he should and does not make it seem like it's the hardest thing anyone has ever done.
It is widely considered that Ramon Montoya invented this beautiful and sombre piece, and this is Paco's tribute to that great artist. For the Rondeña the tuning of the guitar is changed, the sixth string being tuned down a tone to D and the third a semi-tone to F sharp.
Did you post this? Paco Peña is the maestro for me. If for any reason this can't continue here I would pay to get this--as much as I possibly could because this for me is massively important.
@tmjcbs Aha, I love that tuning - can be found in Elliott Smith's 'Clementine' as well - lovely open chord - very flamenco I always thought, now proved right
ME ENCANTA PACO PEÑA, ME ESTOY AFICIONANDO MUCHO A SU MUSICA. LO QUE NO ENTIENDO ES COMO HA PASADO POR DESAPERCIBIDO. Y ES MUY BUENO.

Paul,
You misunderstood my comment. Of course the Rondeña is flamenco. I was only referring to the part from about 3:46 to about 4:10. That phrase is three or four hundred years old and comes from traditional, non-flamenco, Spanish chamber music. It was transcribed by García Lorca in the early 1900s and recorded by Paco de Lucía in the '60s.
elverdaderojavier 4 years ago
This a real musician, I have never heard of him, it is so awesome to hear such beautiful music from such artists, thanx to whoever gave me this link.

sounds like paco's rondena at 3:50 on ( de Lucia I mean)
squirrelmaster89 4 years ago
you are right, but in my opinion neither of them
created the pattern, it may be traditional
NinoMig 4 years ago
It is traditional Spanish and not flamenco. You can hear it on Paco de Lucía's "12 Canciones de García Lorca."
